Best Acting Performance by a Comedian

Doesn't actually have to be in a comedy. Was just watching the seriously seventies Blue Collar, with some fucking killer performances by Yaphet Kotto, Harvey Keitel and especially Richard Pryor, and figured it'd make a good thread. I wonder when the last time I started a thread on the Zone was...

Best Comedic Performances by an Actor can go here s'well. Sean Penn in Fast Times, that kinda thang.

Well, in Best Comedic Performance by an Actor, I'd like to remind everyone of Kevin Kline in A Fish Called Wanda. I've seen that movie over a dozen times and he still cracks me up.

EDIT: Another in this category is Jeff Daniels in Dumb and Dumber. He doesn't usually do comedy, let alone stupid, broad comedy, but he went up against Jim Carrey and came out looking hilarious in this movie. I wish he'd done more work like this.

Robin Williams has done some excellent dramatic acting, but usually in movies I don't like. Billy Murray has, too. Same with Eddie Izzard. I can't think of specific movies right now, though.

Jim Carrey did pretty good work in The Majestic.
Likewise Paul Reiser did well in Aliens.
And Christopher Lloyd as a Klingon......wait a minute.

Best comedic performance by a normally serious actor has got to be somebody in THE BIG LEBOWSKI. Either Bridges or Goodman, I really couldn't choose.

As for comedians doing serious acting, I recently saw THE KING OF COMEDY and was pretty impressed by Jerry Lewis in that one. As far as Robin Williams goes, I did like ONE HOUR PHOTO. My favourite would probably be Bill Murray in LOST IN TRANSLATION.

I'm hoping Borat blows us all away when he plays Freddie Mercury. I think he's a good choice for the role and I hope the film does Mercury's legacy justice.

comedian doing serious

Adam Sandler in "Punch Drunk Love"
Bronson Pinchot in "True Romance"
Tom Hanks in a few different fims, yes, I put him here, he was a comic actor for years before going "straight"
Will Ferrel in "Stranger Than Fiction"
there more, a lot more, but I am short on sleep and dealing with a brain lock :?

serious doing comedy

Robert DeNiro in "Midnight Run"
any number of roles by Christopher Walken who is usually awesome in comedic roles even in shit movies
Leslie Nielson in Police Squad/Naked Gun
Brian Cox has also shown some decent comedic chops

YES! This is a rare case of a guy who struggled in dramas for decades, then found his true calling in comedies.

To the point where I would hesitate to call him a serious actor

I don't think anybody does any more. He's a comedy guy through and through. I bet nobody can name a serious movie he was in off the top of their heads except Forbidden Planet.
