What Would Movie Makers Think If They Read The Phantom Zone?

Which director made the best films, made the best visuals, or smelled the best? This is the forum to find out.

What Would Movie Makers Think If They Read The Phantom Zone?

Postby Cpt Kirks 2pay on Mon Dec 12, 2005 8:41 am

With all the shit we're giving film makers/actors/whatever, or all the cock sucking praise we're giving them, what would they make of everything we say about them?

I reckon at the end of the day, once the dust has settled on a film, we could very well have more importance regarding opinions on anything in film, more than even film 'critics' do. Seeing as we're seemingly sophisticated, intelligent members of the film buffing public. We're not general punters or anything.

What do you guys think? Should we even test this PZ out, by inviting someone like Ron Howard in here, just to say to him, "Look Ron, you bold git who hasn't grown up since Happy Days, A Beautiful Mind may have won best Film Oscar, but considering everyone here thinks it's shit, doesn't that matter more than that Golden Dildo you've got there?".

Or James Cameron. There's a lot of people that reckong that The Abyss is one of the best sci-fi movies ever made. (Though I reckon he knows what people like us are thinking. He seems quite connected).

Just some poor examples given above.

I just think that if you're looking to find out what people really think of something in film, you can't do much better than here. Forget Rotten Tomatoe ratings or Box Office Draws. Here is where the realism is.

I just wish that someone would have commented on my ingenious signature picture by now though.

gentlemens.

The real question is: What would movie-makers think if they read the talkbacks/phantom zone AND then met us in person? The answer would be: damn! I'm glad I don't look like that.

George Lucas, "Duh yeah, The Phantom Menace is my best film - EVER!!!!!!!!!(tm). because it made $430 million at the US Box Office."

George, come here, come here! 'SLAP!!!!' 'SLAP!!!!!' Read the PZ rating you dick.

EVERYONE HATES IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Or maybe you underestimate the power of the Force of 25 years of anticipation and hype for this movie. A movie whose Box Office performance actually, doesn't live up anywhere near to this hype.

Remember what the producers said about Batman's 'staggering box office takings?'...

"Wow, imagine what it would have made if it was actually any good!"

Come come to the Phantom Zone everyone. The Truth shall set you free.

As long as Supergirl, you DON'T set free. She belongs to me here in her prison, forever, and ever, and ever...

We all know what Uwe Boll would think. Because he DOES visit AICN!

I'd be interested to see what would happen if, say, Spielberg were to come here and hear all the criticism of his non-endings and missed endings that have been popping up recently.

We're the discerning movie watching public - those who know what a good movie is, and why it's a good movie, and the same deal for bad ones. When we're asked why we like a movie, we don't say "Uhh, cos I just do", and we don't answer "Cos it's shit!" when asked why we don't like a movie.

We should start, like, an official PZ Constructive Criticism service for filmmakers. it'd be better than film critics, since they're largely bought out anyway (and we don't have to worry about offending our publishers), and better than test screenings because we know what we're talking about.

AND we're really super-up-ourselves.

Okay...

Yeah, it makes sense when you hear Darabont speak on his desire for a B/W theatric release.

Watching the film in B/W was a much more rewarding experience for me, the whole thing had this Rod Serling type of deal going on.

But couldn't he simply suggest to turn down the colour settings on your television?

Just seems a bit odd to have it as a feature on a seperate disc unless it's a different cut.

Short while later someone posted the link to this interview

http://www.chud.com/14106/exclusive-interview-frank-darabont-the-mist-dvd/

with the important Part being

I remember reading one knuckle-head on Aint It Cool News going, ‘Well, I can just turn the color down on my TV.’

Up until now I honestly believed he was referring to atomic, but now looking the old stuff up I see the interview was posted a few days earlier than his comments.

Sorry guys, nothing to see here

But still, lets just pretend Darabont was talking about AH. Who' gonna tell otherwise? Not me.

And that someone... was me!
tapehead wrote:After 'Krunk has talked up the Black & White version of the movie, it's interesting to see that Mori has too - the link has a u-toob of Darabont's thoughts on the alternate version, and just name-checking mid-60's stuff like 'Night of the Living Dead' to point out the 'heightened reality' and uniqueness of vision of older Black & White Horror movies is enough to get me hooked in. I guess it might also be a way to make effects work better and appear like a seamless part of the film. This is something you notice say, between Romero's 'Night' and the later 'Dawn', as the zombies look great in the first film, then the second film's colour palette makes them appear blue, then green, then grey at various times, and a little more comic than daunting or scary unless there's other gore involved. So I'm expecting maybe the CGI might integrate better in the B&W version (although that shot of the massive tentacled creature towering over their car near the end was already pretty killer, and the scene in the pharmacy creepy as fuck, while some of the stuff with the tentacles in the loading bay, or the insect / bats getting into the store looked a little dicey)
I'm pretty intrigued at this point, and as I've been wanting to re-watch The Mist since I saw it at the cinema last month, this will get me to at least rent the damn thing soon.

Darabont's Interview on C.H.U.D is worth a read too - my favourite quote?

C.H.U.D. wrote:I remember reading one knuckle-head on Aint It Cool News going, 'Well, I can just turn the color down on my TV.' Okay, Jethro, you do that.

That's right Bitches, I quote myself!
