Top 10 Animes!

Anime, cartoons and 3D. Animated shorts and features. And don't forget the animation genius in Bulgaria.

i used to loose my temper when i was younger and kids used to come into the videoshop i worked in and referd to anime as Manga.

it's silly now cos thats what there used to it being called due to the company but when i was a young geeky fan boy it upset me.

Well, I'm officially about half way thru Cowboy Bebop, The Movie, and its pretty sweet. My only quibble so far is with the little hacker kid character - she (he?) is annoying. But this is minor gripe. Otherwise, very entertaining.

Howdy doodie Ya'll...

I'm a newbie, so be gentle....

I'm really getting into Anime movies at the moment, but I've reached a stalemate on what's worth my time to watch. What's good, what's bad, what's not classed as Jap ani???

This ain't in order but my current top few is...

*Spirited Away.
*Fullmetal Alchemist
*The Mysterious Cities of Gold (all be it half french, half jap)
*Animaterix (again, not truly jap ani but all teh directors and some of the writers are)
*Castle in the Sky
*Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind (well anything from Hayao Miyazaki really)
*Dragon Ball Z (the master of padding)

So kids, any more I should see?????

Urotsukidoji, the legend of the Overfiend - absolute lunacy

My favourites are blood: the last vampire and Lupin The III: The Castle of Cagliostro.

Akira and Spirited Away are also amazing.

well, "Full Metal Panic", while featuring the same principal characters is a different series than "Full Metal Panic: FUMOFFU". i like FUMOFFU better, because i think it is much funnier. its like FMP, only in a normal high school setting. it makes for some highly dubious, yet hilarious situations. at its core, its little more than another rom/com. nevertheless, i laugh at it a lot. more than the original FMP anyways. but you dont need to know the original series to get into FUMOFFU. try watching the first episode or two of that one. you may like it more.

Top 10 not particular order:
1. Akira - First anime i ever saw which is reason enough to add it!

2. Macross Plus (The Movie) - Music works so perfectly in it

3. All of the Dragon Ball Z universe - Purely because it was such easy watching, although sometimes entire episodes where they powered up got alittle annoying.

4. Winds of Amnesia - Love the story to this, particularly the fact that the ending isn't cheesy.

5. Vampire Hunter D - Purely because 'D' is the one of the coolest characters in anime, o and as a kid the i loved the talking hand!

6. Ghost in the shell (original movie) - the animation and story wins in this one.

7. X - Probably my all time favourite (aided by the fact that i've read all the mangas). I just reckon this story and the atmosphere are what the matrix and many other movies including the current series 'heroes' are in some way influenced by. It is a simple idea for a story yes (good vs. evil) but its executed so well!

8. Mobile Suit: Gundam Wing - Some people loved it some hated, me, i had nothing but love for it!

9. Detonator Orgun - It was long yes, but i personally found it very rewarding.

10. Oh and perhaps the original street fighter II (movie) anime - purely because the live-action movie sucked so hard, and this ruled so much by making ryu and ken f*cking awesome!! The fight scenes were just excellent loved it when ryu fought the bruce lee guy (forget his name now..)

God damn the Freezer Saga they powered up so much in that lol!! It was always like- *Freezer* "yeh..well i was taking it easy...now i'll show you real power!!!!!" cuts to piccolo "Woah freezer just became a hundred times more powerful than goku!!" Cut to Goku "Argghh!!" --I did find this pretty funny!

However i will say when he first turned into a super saiyan in that saga it freaking awesome so so so cool!!

Hmm, after looking myself it appears there is an anime series on dvd, although i couldn't find it anywhere on region 2, so probably won't be able to see it! Would of been cool though, especially since the major trouble with the movie is that it doesn't feel out the characters well enough! However having read the mangas i felt movie invested in the movie!

What was the series like then?

It had standard 26 episodes, obviously things took more time to happen. The bsic set up (good vs evil) and the characters were the same (I think, it's been a while since I saw it) but he overall tone and resolution was less dark. (Spoiler:A lot more people survive than in the movie) Was the ending of the movie faithful to the manga? If so the series isn't.

Hey all,

I remember reading a review in the fall or late summer about a anime series that was from the perspective of a news team following a war in the near future and I couldn't find it in searches. Any one know what that is?

Also has there been any REALLY good anime films recently? I'm talking "Perfect Blue", "Ghost in the Shell", "Ninja Scroll", "Akira", Miyazaki films, etc quality. The last new anime I liked was "Steamboy" and I wanted to see "Paprika" and "Techronkret" but haven't seen those yet. Other than that I haven't heard about anything cool. That recent news post about one called "Time Traveling Girl" or something that sounded neat. Any ideas or is anime now days all about wackass exaggerated faces and collecting/fighting cute monsters/playing cards?

Thanks virtual friends.

djcribage: What you're looking for is called "Flag", and it follows a video journalist. It's pretty good, too.

On the recommendation note, if you haven't seen "The Place Promised In Our Early Days", it's friggin' fantastic. Not exactly an action film, it's so beautiful to look at you won't care. highly recommended.

After a recent Anime spree, my list would read something like this:

1) Mind Game

2) Elfen Lied (series)

3) FLCL (series)

4) Future Boy Conan

5) Cowboy Bebop (series)

6) Trigun (series)

7) Millennium Actress

8) Grave of the Fireflies

9) Castle in the Sky

10) Wolf's Rain (series)

(I'd completely change this list in retrospecT)

Tough one... lessee...

10) Excel Saga - sick/twisted and very funny... poor Menchi...

9) The Slayers - D&D with a sense of humor

8) Ranma 1/2 - Little bit of everything: Fighting, romance, slapstick comedy, and pandas.

7) Spirited Away - Still my favorite anime film of all time.

6) Sailormoon - Classic; my gateway into anime to begin with.

5) Fruit Baskets - Cute series, gotta love the characters

4) Azumanga Daioh - A lot like Fruit Baskets and laugh out loud funny, still one of my all time favorite series ever; live action or animated.

3) Cowboy Bebop - Just all sorts of hip and cool. Great action and music too.

2) Full Metal Alchemist - Really well written adventure series. Actually sad that there isn't more episodes/movies.

1) Neon Genesis Evangelion - A series you can break down in so many different ways, especially psychologically and theologically.

I know I'm probably leaving a ton of series and movies that I like off the list but those are the ones that seem to come to mind right away.

Sweet, another fan!

On a purely technical level, Gantz is pretty amazing looking. I don't think I've ever seen a program where the camera is like a character of its own.

I get what you're saying about the lead being a bit of a horny, self-obsessed douche, but I've never seen a teen who isn't like that. He does seem to be slowly maturing a little as the series goes along, as well.

I'll admit, the fact that so many of the other more likeable Gantzers end up exploding in a cloud of viscera appeals to me in a Sam Jackson getting eaten by the shark kind of way.

I don't think it's that amazing though, just very entertaining. These high concept, nihilistic animes are fun to watch, but they don't move me as much as some of the others do.

I'm at about Episode 15 of Gantz at the moment, and I'm still enjoying the hell of it. Maybe something'll happen later on to completely change my mind, in which case I'll just replace it with Neon Genesis or something, but right now that looks doubtful.

I might give Gantz a try one of these days.. just right now I'm pretty wrapped up in watching a little more Bleach.

I don't know if it can be any worse than DBZ (sorry Vegeta if you're reading this ^^;).

I can't say I dislike any anime listed so far, so I'll just add to the list...

Wolf Brigade
BubbleGum Crisis (and Crash)
GunSmith Cats
Tenchi Muyo (It's a guilty pleasure.)

And my  moment goes too...
Dragon Pink (The funniest hentai I have ever seen.)

In terms of wasting time sure. Or at least it's more obvious as most episodes have a timer. I mi9ght be exaggerating out of fuzzy memory but it takes the characters 4 to 5 episodes (22 minutes?) to do a 'mission' with an time limit of one hour. And overalol I found the series to lead completely nowhere.

edit: I just reread theGantz thread and realised I vowed not to watch the series till the end. Of course I got weak and did it nonetheless so I could be sure my hate was justified.

I hate it.
Note to myself: Fix this image shit!
