I remember coming out of the Dark Crystal, aged 7, my mother babbling about how wonderful it was, myself emerging from a psychotic episode. So even then it polarised people. I think between that movie, Time Bandits and ET, I can probably explain why I'm on anti-anxiety medication today.

There were lots of great things about that movie, but man, the whole, "let's exterminate an entire race" thing and the whole, "let's drain people of their vital essences by frying their faces in a microwave of evil then drink it to grow younger whilst turning them into walking slave corpses" thing kinda got me. I remember thinking to myself when the movie ended and the "nice" Skeksis brought Kira back to life, "yo, dudes, that's great and all, but seeing as you exterminated our entire race, you think you could do that a few more times before buggering off to who knows where so that we don't have to worry about inbreeding?"

The one on the left is Dick Cheney.
I think the other is Karl Rove.

The Mystics and the Skesis were part of the same being, when the crystal cracked because of fighting between then they split their beings into goo sides and bad sides. So technically is was just the pure evil Skeksis that tried to kill Kira.

And I was there at the same time watching those exact films in the cinema. I must admit that Dark Crystal had a bigger effect on me than ET. Dark Crystal's world still holds up today, it looks stunning and imaginative.

The company/Disney and/or his son.

Disney's dead too, so I guess we're aiming for the son.

From MTV:
Brian Henson Reveals Plans For 'Fraggle Rock' And 'Dark Crystal' Sequels

Henson told us that "Fraggle Rock" is "still in very active development. Very active development. That has a very strong script." Woosh. See that emphasis on the second 'very'? That's all Henson baby. He was emphatic in his "Fraggle" talk. And that's not all!

"It'll have a strong musical component," he said. "It'll be expanded to an older audience. 'Fraggle Rock' [the TV show] was presented... for a pretty exclusively children's audience. The feature film does expand it to be more accessible to a wider audience."

"We have a 'Dark Crystal' sequel, called 'The Power of the Dark Crystal.' It has a very strong script." More emphasis. I like that, Mr. Henson. Enthusiasm. It's infectious. I'm already excited about these projects, and hearing your comments only amplifies that.

"Both of those projects... are very close to going into pre-production," Henson said. "They're both really ready to go. [The studio is] just [in the process of] putting together the final finance pieces and the final distribution pieces."

I'm so psyched about Dark Crystal 2.

Glad to hear it's still alive and well.

wow I really hope this comes through !

As has been mentioned by someone else, I haven't seen this in so long, I'd be afraid to revisit. Slick visuals in movies have come such a long way that I would be worried it would tarnish the great memories I have of it.

I would really hope they stick to the model worlds like the first one as much as possible.

The visuals in the first one were so well realised, they still look beautiful today BECAUSE they are real. All those lovely little touches in the landscape scenes. I'm getting teary eyed just thinking about it.

I think I'm going to have to watch this tonight, or get it on Blu Ray or something.

I'm a little worried with the new movie having a fire girl and having those constant effects going - as we all know SFX hardly last a few viewings before people start saying, 'I can see the graphics'

Why don't you just download it and put people like me out of business some more?

Fuck any naysaying on The Dark Crystal, the movie was awesome when I was 10, and still holds up. I, for one, want this movie to happen. Now.

Christ, only Burl would put a 'blecch' in the thread title. If the Gelflings were a lot less twink and lot more bear, lunch-box over here would be talking about 'licking jelly off their bellys'.

I mean, come on, who did not have a hard-on for Kira, back in the day?

Oh yeah, Burl.

/I keed.

Before or after she had the life sucked out of her? She sort of looked Kate Mossish with the pale face and black eye sockets.

Well I'm no really that up for it. Was disappointed in this movie when I saw it as a kid. A bit soulless, lifeless. No, I didn't fancy Kira.

Totally agree with this. The Dark Crystal was a serious muppet movie and it worked. From everything I've read about the new one, it's going to be awesome. When I talked to the Frouds, they said that they [Henson] were really taking their time over it, they weren't sure why, now it seems they are working on a comic. Things are stepping up in preparation I think.

Here's to the hoping the movie gets a release soon.

This was right in my age range back in the day, and yet I never saw it. Looks cool, pretty dark, but I think the original was as well?

this looks fantastic so far. I saw the original in the theatre with my younger brother and loved it. I bought it on VHS and shared it with my kids when they were young and they loved it. now this series is coming out and my oldest granddaughter is just about old enough to watch it. the original is quite unique and timeless and this series looks to be true to that in both look and spirit. really looking forward to it.
