Life Long Search for Animation

Postby Rayzak on Thu Mar 16, 2006 2:05 pm

I'm a 27 year old guy that has been looking for more info on a piece of animation that I saw when I was maybe 6 or 7 years old.

I believe It was a featurette, a 'making of' piece, or the demo reel of an animation studio. It was maybe about 15 minutes long, and I think it was shown on HBO.

All I can remember are short bits of animation and imagery. So... Here goes.

The hero of this piece was a anthropomorphic fox, a furry if you will. He was dressed very punk. His girlfriend was a human blond. Very Barb Wire looking.

The setting was a Blade Runner/Cyber Punk looking city. Dark, wet megatropolis, that sort of thing.

The imagery I remember most, and what the host spent the most time explaining, was the bad guy. He was always in a Limo. He seemed very studly, but they didn't show his face. In the limo with him was a computer. This computer had a female voice, and spoke with a pair of green, wire framed lips. These lips were real CG, and the host showed how the animation studio used computers to make them.

I hope that somebody out there remembers this, and can shine some light on it for me. This has been driving my crazy for years, and not a week goes by that I don't think about it.

Thanks for any help you guys can be.

hmmm...

sounds, SOUNDS, like something Ralph Bakshi might've had a hand in.

If you haven't already, take a gander at some of those titles to see which, if any, may be what you're having so much trouble remembering.

I don't think it was anything by Bakshi. I've seen a few of his movies, and the animation style in my mystery film was more fluid, more anime like. When I first saw Akira, I was instantly reminded of my missing movie, both in smoothness and colors.

But, if the animation was that smooth and colorful in the mid 80's, it could have been just a high quality demo reel from Random Animation Studio #520, meaning I'll never find it.

yeah, I figured someone who's interested in animation would know a Bakshi from something else.

Cosmic Slop perchance?

The years are off, but it was a trippy 'lil HBO animation show.

Since we're talkin' 86-'87, back when HBO's "original" programming was a tad bit less in budget then today, might it have been something from a "Spike and Mike's Animation Festival" (or some such title)?

Good luck man, think I'm out of ideas.

Damn. Thanks anyway. I have always had luck rediscovering animation from my past. My last hunt, much like this, was a memory of jumbled images and scenes. Ended being Light Years. Before that, Legend of Orin. And I'm currently waiting for Mysterious Cities of Gold to come out on DVD. I think I'll be waiting a very long time.
