Ultimate Avengers

Postby The Garbage Man on Wed Aug 10, 2005 1:25 am

Two of the guys behind the upcoming Ultimate Avengers direct-to-DVD movie talked about it at WWC; transcript here.

I've been waiting for so long for Marvel to get its act together and put out some feature animation, and these guys are saying all of the right things. I just hope the first one is good enough, and does well enough financially, to merit more releases - this could really open up an avenue for Marvel to adapt some of their greatest storylines.

Hey, this idea, she looks a good, no? It's a like, after seeing the Incredibles, why bother with a the live action funny book a movie, eh? Just a do the animations inna stead.

I like a what they say about a the "stunt casting" for a the voices. Maybe iffa they save a some money onna the cast they can a put it inna to the animation?

Katsumoto: There will be, by the way, a television component. And just to trail and be consistent with what Craig said, the film would come out as we intended in its entirety to the fans first. And then it would have a long gap between that and broadcast platform. It won't be Saturday morning, I can assure you that. We're going to be announcing next week what our broadcast platform is. But when we made the deal with broadcaster, they were extremely cooperative and said, "We got the kind of film that we want. This is not going to be watered down for Saturday morning. This will be prime-time viewing." It will be risque, there will be rough-housing, as Craig describes it, but it will be in its purest form.

So there will be a television series based on this, but it will be prime-time ala JLU. This pleases me. I only wish they could give Ultimate Fantastic Four the same treatment. (More realistic, deeper and more mature.)

I was thinking Thor might be the unannounced fourth film; that would be awesome.

I'd really love to see them take on riskier, lesser-known characters for these projects. With all of their apprehensions about having a star who either always wears a mask or is covered in scars, Deadpool could make for a great animated movie.

The Inhumans could be fun, too.

Ooh, and the Defenders.

Iron Man was always my favorite character growing up, because Stark seemed a bit more multi-faceted than many of the other characters in the Marvel Universe. I'd heard rumors about a live-action Iron Man movie in the works, but don't know if it's in development hell now or not.

Do we know which Avengers characters are going to be included in the animated movie/series?

There was a report from WWC describing the footage shown, I believe it said that the movie will feature all or most of the characters from the first arc of The Ultimates. I'll see if I can find that, but for now I'd hazard a guess at:

Cap
Hulk
Fury
Giant Man
Wasp
Iron Man
Thor
Scarlet Witch

Now this is really interesting. Recall how excited everyone got when they saw how faithful Sin City was, and then think of the possibilities when computer generated imagery is married to contemporary animation, as is described in the panel. And seeing how they don't have to appeal to a mass audience (as it won't be released in theatres), honestly it's very hard not to get a little bit giddy when thinking about the future potential of this.

Personally, I want to see an FF that they don't have to dumb down 'for the kids'. Fantastic Four done as 2001: A Space Odyssey. Something mind-bending with wonder and beauty to it. A little Olaf Stapledon, a bit Brian Aldiss, a little Philip K. Dick.

Not that there's anything wrong with having an FF movie that's just stupid fun (I did enjoy FF for what it was) but now we can have our cake and eat it too. We can have both versions.

Hell yes to a Byrne Dark Phoenix Saga. I'd also really love to see a Kirby old-school X-Men movie (or a Kirby anything for that matter) or an adaptation of the Giant-Sized All-New, All-Different X-Men.

Ultimate X-Men would make for a good movie, too, as long as they don't foolishly kill of a certain character like they did in the comics.

I know they're going ahead with a live-action version, but I still think Silver Surfer and Galactus would be better realized in 2D or even 3D animation.

My much beloved She-Hulk graphic novel... drool.
What was the wicked Spider-Man cross over with Kraven called? It had Vermin and the Lizard and Kraven blew his noodle off. It was drawn my Mike "I never d/r/e/w an ankle too thin" Zeck.

Animation could make "Watchmen" better than any live-action movie. Also "Transmetropolitan." Both would require enough CGI effects for the backgrounds that they may as well do it all with animtion.

Why does dr3w come out "draw"? I don't get it. Is this some kind of joke? Do I amuse you?

I second an animated Watchmen. It'd be so much simpler, not to mention almost certainly more faithful an adaptation, if done in animation.

Kingdom Come would be amazing as an animated movie; I almost expected them to adapt it this season on JLU, what with some of the hints they dropped.

Courtesy of Comics Continuum:

Cebulski said he's seen some of the Ultimate Avengers animated movie Marvel and Lions Gate will release in February.

"Some of it is panel-to-panel taken from the Ultimates comic book," Cebulski said. "It's (Bryan) Hitch's stuff come to life, but in that Bruce Timm sort of animated style. And it works.

"They went with top-notch animation. They've added to the story a little bit and expanded it. It makes it a little more violent, a little more hardcore. They're not pulling any punches with it."

Man, that's just awesome.

The best part is after Hulk gets mad, and makes the magic castle tilt. Then he falls into the arms of the green goblin and dr. doom. Thank god they were there to save him!

Oh, and when Captain America was running around, and around the magic castle, and helped Powerman up from sitting. That was awesome too.

Speaking of animated Marvel properties, has everyone seen this:

Unlike the movies, I think the DC animated shows have been consistently better and of higher quality than the Marvel ones. (and I love my Spiderman 68 psychedelic Bakshi collection.)

I always thought the Dini Batman cartoon was consistently outstanding. much smarter than you might expect from a daily cartoon, you know?

but i'd watch an Avengers cartoon, why not? no big whup.

He made spoofs of other movies making all the characters thumbs with tonguey's face.. I own a few of them... Thumb Wars, Bat Thumb & The Blair Thumb... But I have yet to see Thumbtanic, The Godthumb or Frankenthumb.. I think it has been released as a boxed set now, but when I first found them they were being sold separately. Very funny stuff....

There's a report from the Wizard World panel at Comics Continuum. Linkage.

Johnson said it was liberating work on the straight-to-DVD project, as opposed to writing for a Saturday morning show.

"It's more than just the fact that we ignore some BS&P standards that dictate the things you can and can't do on television -- and we got to do that. But it was more of a freedom, more than let's swear and show some risque shots of Black Widow because we can -- and we did."

Heh. Bawdy little monkeys.

The trailer, which will be featured on the Fantastic Four DVD, spotlighted Captain America, Iron Man, Giant-Man, Thor and the Hulk in action. Greg Johnson, the film's writer, and Craig Kyle of Marvel Studios then fielded questions from the floor.
