Animation is built on plagiarism! If it weren't for someone plagiarizing "The Honeymooners", we wouldn't have "The Flintstones"! If someone hadn't ripped off "Sgt. Bilko," there'd be no "Top Cat"! Huckleberry Hound, Chief Wiggum, Yogi Bear? Ha! Andy Griffith, Edward G. Robinson, Art Carney! Your honor, you take away our right to steal ideas, where are they gonna come from?

Lambasting Cars because it is just a retread of Doc Hollywood while extolling the merits of A Bugs Life, which is just a retread of The Magnificient Seven/Seven Samruai, is just ridiculous.
Chairman Kaga wrote:On an unrelated note something else I am sick of now-a-days, in the post Aladdin feature animation world, is the fascination with casting "names" for character roles. I cite Aladdin as the starting point for this what with Robin Williams breakout performance as the Genie but since then there seems to be more senseless "name" casting s simply to help sell the film rather than to improve the film.

He loves cars and racing and Route 66 and always wanted to make a movie about all that, and when he became successful, he had the chance. My guess is that Cars plays better to audiences who have the same loves as Lasseter. But I doubt even he would say it's as good a film, objectively speaking, as, say, Toy Story 2.

In some ways I hope that's true, because that means that they're not afraid to experiment with the conventions of the genre a little.
