Me neither, but that second movie ruled my stupid nuts. The first one sucked.

Apparently the hand is cursed by a demon symbiot. I can't find anything on how or why. You do that.

Had to laugh at that...I'm a big fan of the first movie but didn't really like the second.

Yeah, no clue 'bout the hand either.

I'm not even sure if they explained it in the manga. Mutation? D is supposed to remain enigmatic, so, um, yeah. Good luck.

Yeah, that link was sooo scholarly.

Try checking any of the others? The guy who translated the manga has no idea...so you get no prize. Hell, the main page for the "Bloodlust" describes it as a "parasitic entity in the shape of a human face."

The hand is not a natural part of D, but instead a parasite that attached itself to D before either movie takes place. In order to keep its host alive (and thus itself) when D is in danger, as well as earn its keep so D won't finally decide to just cut his own hand off to get rid of it, the parasite uses its abilities to give D an occasional "helping hand".

Ha! Who's the true nerd...oh wait...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vampire_Hunter_D:_Bloodlust

He is the host of a sentient parasite, which appears as a face in his left palm, enjoys annoying D to no end, and can suck in massive amounts of matter
.

But for the sake of compromise I'll go with a sentient-accursed-demon-symbiont.

What a way to start the day...a debate over Vampire Hunter D. <sniff>. My geek cred grows day by day here in the Zone.

An ungrateful bastard putz at that! And what do you mean was?

Nothing like hitting #900 while debating the origins and rational of an accursed-demon-sybiont-hand!

Man I own this movie on DVD and I completely forgot about the hand. It's just one of those left-field things you expect in an anime: "So his hand's got a face and it talks...cool". I mean when you've seen a mangified old man - who looks eerily like Dino- making love to a concubine when his member suddenly turns into a snake and crawls away, with him still attached to it, well it just makes talking hands seem like much less of a big deal.
