It's not that I don't appreciate the references, trust me, I'm in the right age group, I get all the references. References to me aren't jokes. They're references.

That doesn't mean they're not funny, because the references are generally out of context, so it's surprising, and therefore funny.

But I wonder sometimes about shows that are laden with pop culture references and whether or not they're just a result of lazy writing. Remember, despite comedy being around since the dawn of time (according to History of The World) pop culture references are a pretty current phenomenon.

(You could argue that they used to be "historical" references, like Bugs Bunny would do a joke about Custer's last stand, and to that I say, "uh... yeah... but... uh...")

And here's where personally I think people get divided on the show.

Some people like the references, because they "get the joke".

Other people don't like the references because they think that they are there to make other people feel smart because they "get the joke".

Each group thinks they're smarter than the other group.

As for the chicken fight... I think the first one was probably the funniest moment in the show's history.

I always found Family Guy to be mediocre, but mildly entertaining.

Then I went to university and I met the Family Guy frat boy contingent...and I wanted to blow my head off.

Why do the annoying frat boys always latch onto the mediocre shows?

So, yeah, my opinion is a bit biased because I am forced to interact with the most obnoxious people and they all happen to be fans of Family Guy.

Give me The Simpsons, Futurama, or South Park any day.

I am qualified computer nerd and the thought of Reboot makes me want to kill myself.... on a related note Maui, and other programmers/computer nerds, Code Monkeys might be something to look out for. It's a G4 show, only ten episodes have been done so far, but it's a pretty hilarious animated show... done in 80s video game graphics. Easy to watch, not that many episodes to catch up on, totally worth it!

I love Code Monkeys. Incredible show. The last one they just did with the wrestlers was funny.

And I still don't get the hate on Family Guy to be honest. Lazy writing? Would it make every critic feel better if Seth McFarlane wrote until his eyes bled and he collapsed in a pool of sweat and urine? Point is, Family Guy's hilarious. Comedy doesn't necessarily have to come after toil and back breaking labor. Sometimes the simplest laughs are the best.

And I've sort of drifted away from South Park, to be honest. The last few episodes I saw were indeed funny, but I'll never understand how the WoW episode won an emmy. Especially with the scene where Cartman shits in a bedpan because he's too lazy to get up and go(sorry, he was so 'into' the game, pardon). Kinda proves that all these 'award' shows are beyond meaningless now.

Oh well.

Sad to hear they're not re-airing this, but I'm eagerly anticipating the Empire Strikes Back episode. Can't wait. BTW, did anyone else notice Roger from American Dad in the cantina? He's on the left as they walk in.

I hope I'm not misrepresenting the feeling I get from those who don't like the show. We're not expecting McFarlane and company to write 18 hours a day to make the show funnier. We're expecting jokes instead of the constant stream of media references. Building the show around references isn't necessarily lazy, but it's easy. It doesn't stretch the way The Simpsons in its better years and especially Futurama has stretched the comedy. Family Guy operates on the level of a mediocre sitcom like The King of Queens except that it constantly drags in the weird/odd/geeky references as opposed to the traditional sitcom gags - though the studly jokes and sex jokes get plenty of screen time, too.

To me, FG isn't just unfunny, it's boring. I'm not a big fan of South Park, but it takes chances. It stretches way too far sometimes, but like Futurama it displays some real imagination. FG is workmanlike.

Yes, sometimes the references on Family Guy do go on and on, but it makes me laugh. I mean, McFarlane has some serious geek cred imho. Getting Flint from GIJoe, putting Lion-O and Cheetara from Thundercats in the FG movie, etc. I can't help but respect that. I'm not gonna try and convert those who don't watch, I can only extoll the virtues of why the show makes me laugh. Life's too short not to find what you like and enjoy it.

Keep up the good work, manatees.

and that's my main gripe with the show.

every time I've watched an episode, I can't help but flash to the other shows that FG invariably references/rips off.

and I find myself wondering why I'm not watching those shows instead.

"Family guy is a show written by some geeks who love popculture" - too true, but the landmark popcultural touchstones that the show stea...well, maybe not steals, but certainly something far more dubious than homages, those shows, to me at any rate, don't just feel like they were only written by "geeks who love popculture".

Sure, The Simpsons have riffed on most every iconic movie/TV/{insert media here} pop-cultural phenomena, but it also felt like the writers (and animators, 'cuz I don't see any of you defending the "look" of Family Guy, 'cuz, really, it's atrocious) have lived a little, have done stuff with their lives far more significant than just absorbing pop-culture.
Personally, I'm an atheist in the voting booth and a theist in the movie theatre. I separate the morality of religion with the spirituality and solace of it. There is something boring about atheism.

Agreed, but the animation on the Star Wars ep was really quite good, and I'm not talking about the roto work. As I mentioned above they really nailed the character movements in each scene.

Now...they essentially just copied the movie of course, so that doesn't necessarily refute the "lazy" argument, but...

Right, there's a difference between using a pop-culture reference to say something, or to make a point - and using it as some sort of random element thrown into a scene for a quick gag. The thing about Family Guy is McFarlane doesn't exactly have a point. It's just a bunch of references and jokes. He doesn't say anything about the world.

Which is fine, there's nothing wrong with liking fast food entertainment.

Hehehe, a couple of chuckles here and there but it was cute more than funny, IMO.

I almost missed the Seth Green connection when they were making fun of Robot Chicken... I'd forgotten that he did a voice on Family Guy. [/not really a fan]

My favorite parts, believe it or not, were the recurring couch gag and "Red October shtanding by."
