BATMAN Animated DTV Movies

Postby TheButcher on Sat Dec 08, 2007 4:25 pm

DC's third DTV movie will be BATMAN: GOTHAM KNIGHT!

Bruce Timm is doing the Batman: Gotham Knight anime, plus a couple more details

-------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------

Yes, you heard it, the man who brought us the emmy award winning Batman: The Animated Series, Superman: The Animated Series, Batman Beyond, Justice League/Justcie League Unlimited, and giving us DC's DTV series that started with Superman: Doomsday and we're waiting for the upcoming Justice League: The New Frontier, is doing the anime series; Batman: Gotham Knight.

It was revealed on the Toonzone forums where he answered a member's question that he is invovled with Gotham Knight, and revealed that its 6 segments (so this is like Animatrix), and there are three composers who will do 2 segments each. Robert Kral, who did the score for Superman: Doomsday (that you can now get at music stores), is doing two. With the other two composers being: Kevin Manthei, who is doing the score for Justice League: The New Frontier and who did the scores for Scream 2-3 and the film version of Resident Evil, and Christopher Drake, who did the two Hellboy DTVs and is also currently doing the third.

Another thing that was revealed was the three writers on this anime. The people are Josh Olsen (A History of Violence), Batman Begins writer David S. Goyer, and comics scribe Brian Azzarello.

So it looks like those who didn't want to be bothered by this are now going to get this when it comes out.

Batman: Gotham Knight is a 2008 anime direct-to-DVD anthology film of six animated short films set in-between Batman Begins and The Dark Knight. Directed by Bruce Timm, co-creator and producer of Batman: The Animated Series, the film's six segments are written by Josh Olson, David Goyer, Brian Azzarello, Greg Rucka, Jordan Goldberg, and Alan Burnett. Each segment has its own artistic style, just as numerous artists work in the same DC Universe.

That's cool, Batman looks like a friggin' wolf in that picture, really menacing.

Not sure if Kevin Conroy's voicework would match with this Batman.

Reminded me of Paul Pope's "Batman: Year 100" artwork.

Agreed.

Conroy's an amazing Batman but Gotham Knight is meant to bridge Batman Begins and The Dark Knight, so I'd rather have Bale (or a good sound-alike).

Also, I think Conroy officially retired from the role.

Since it's not in the BTAS-STAS-JL-JLU continuity there's no reason to stick with Conroy.

He really retired? I guess when you think about it, he probably logged on who-knows how many hours doing Batman.

Perhaps one should consider that Wolverine is basically Batman... except shinier. Let's see how you manage an off-the-shelf Batman, Cha-Ka.

All in the anime style? I was under the impression that each of the six segments would have their own artistic style.

I guess it depends on one's definition of "anime."

There's a galaxy of difference between the styles of, for instance, Akira and Pokemon, Cowboy Bebop and Super Milk Chan. They're all conidered "anime." The Japanese have like 300 different words to describe their animation.

But yeah, they're gonna mix up the styles a little on the DVD.

Good point. Totally true.... and it would be weird if one of the stories was anything like Super Milk Chan.

I just hope the music and all is up on par with some quality. So far the DTV realy bored me to death. Doomsday was so terrible. The music, the timing, the animation. Batman the animated series is better animated then the current DTV. Let's hope this one is, at least, on par with the TAS.

Nah, it didn't work with Matrix, Riddick, Van Helsing, Season 3 of Alias and all the other movies that had an animated tie-in. Let's hope that this one won't be as boring and pointless as the other examples (Hey, Bruce Timm is involved, so let's be optimistic!)

I beg to differ, at least as far as Animatrix is concerned: it was the best of all the Matrix sequels we got, for realz!! And the Clone Wars cartoons were better than the SW prequels!!

The Batman to samurai comparisons are just so natural that this idea doesn't come across as being gimmicky at all. Bruce Aniwayne looks a little too effeminate but besides that what we've seen so far is pretty cool.

I agree with this. I felt like the opening two part animation about the start of the war between man and machine was great and if anything probably helped enhanced the other films at least a little bit.

Still wonder if there's any word if Bale and company are reprising their roles as far as voice acting this.

Bale is listed in the IMDb entry, but you know how those can change.

I think I'm most looking forward to the Deadshot segment. I did NOT expect him to pop up in this continuity.

Them batman clips looked pretty badass. Its a shame the Animatrix did it first. I'm hoping the Batman segments are a bit longer, as all of the Animatrix one acts were pretty but ultimately forgettable.

From Worlds Finest:
Kevin Conroy, a familiar name to fans of Batman: The Animated Series, among other related series, will be lending his voice to the upcoming direct-to-vide Batman: Gotham Knight animated feature.

It has been confirmed that Kevin Conroy will be voicing Batman in Batman: Gotham Knight. The specifics of his role, whether he'll be playing Batman for the entire animated feature or just for a segment, has yet to be revealed.

It's set in-between the stories of Batman Begins and The Dark Knight. I think it's a bit like The Animatrix and a bit like Clone Wars...just fun stuff to fill the gap.

If you're talking about whether it's "official canon" or not...then don't. Because people who argue about "official canon" are twunts.

In the Dark Knight Discussion Thread, yorrick brown wrote:from chud.com

MTV has an exclusive five-minute clip from Batman: Gotham Knight, the anthology animation feature that bridges Batman Begins and The Dark Knight. This is from Futoshi Higashide's piece, called Crossfire, written by Greg Rucka. This seems to be one of the shorts less mired in the fantastic, though that bit of Batman standing in the middle of an urban hell is pretty out there, and his punches seem to hit with amazing force. That extra year or so in the field really paid off. Oddly, however, I don't much like Kevin Conroy's performance as Bats here; maybe it's just me, but here he sounds a lot more...average...than in his many other years of voicing animated versions of the character. Perhaps that's just meant to be youth.

http://chud.com/articles/articles/15312/1/FIVE-MINUTES-IN-GOTHAM-CITY/Page1.html

It is highly -- HIGHLY -- awesome, but I do have to agree about Conroy's performance. It really is a bit bland.
