It has chimps... chimps in space! A bit like SpaceCamp but with less Lea Thompson.

TRAILER

...well it's got the voice talents of Patrick Warburton, anyway, and likely features references to The Right Stuff, which is usually good value.

I think this could work if the plot stays close to the actual American space program. I want to see chimps become astronaut heroes at the expense of dying in space. I'd also like to see some Cosmonaut dogs race with the chimps to outer space.

What if they use baby humans for test subjects before sending up the chimps? Could be a little sentimental drama in that - the baby trainers saying a tearful goodbye to the doomed infant.

Wouldn't it be nice if they could get away with it? It would have to be on Adult Swim, I suppose, instead of a G-rated theatrical.

Why do those chimps remind me of the Thunderbirds characters?

I'd be happy with a 5 second grainy flashback of some toddlers dressed in space gear hooked into a G-machine to show this universe's space program in its infancy.

How's about you try keeping this thread on topic.

It's good that, with the "Ham" character, they've made reference one of the real-life chimp astronauts (who was in a Mercury test flight, survived a depressurisation of the capsule, landed and then went on to live another 20 years).

Although I doubt the chimps in this film will subject to so much Pavlovian conditioning.

It's a fictionalised biopic of the real Ham the Chimpanzee.

Show Ham some respect. He's a true American hero and anyone who gives Space Chimps a negative review is a communist and a traitor.

Re: SPACE CHIMPS

Postby RogueScribner on Sun Jul 20, 2008 3:12 am

So I saw Space Chimps today.

My gf wanted to see Mamma Mia! but we only had a narrow window of opportunity and that movie didn't start for another 35 minutes. We just didn't have the time. But SC was about to start. I know, it looked ALF, but who doesn't like monkeys? And in SPACE! It took some doing, but I convinced her to go. If anything, it'd be a brief bit of nonsense in the middle of the afternoon before we were due to be at a friend's house for dinner. Who cares, right?

I have to say. I was pleasantly surprised! It's not the greatest movie or anything. But after the dourness of TDK, I certainly needed a laugh and this movie had its share of them. I was surprised to hear so many familiar voices, like Jeff Daniels, Patrick Warburton, and Kristin Chenoweth. These actors don't just bring the funny, but they bring the heart. WALL•E was lauded for its cuteness and social commentary, but Space Chimps is no less cute or socially pointed. Not since Project X has a movie said so much about how we treat animals and how that reflects upon us. Who is the real animal here? The ones who do nothing but love each other and try to scrape out a survival in this crazy world or the people who perform weird experiments on defenseless beings and shoot them into space because their lives aren't worth as much as ours? A dead chimp is just as horrific as a dead homeless man. But we aren't shooting homeless people into space.

There's cutsie jokes for the kids, but the politcal and social discussions contained within will be the real draw for adults. For every monkey-throwing-poop joke there's at least 3 asides about inhumane treatment of animals, manifest destiny, and the price we pay for our own comfort and domain over the planet. There are no easy answers to the questions raised in this movie. Kristin Chenoweth sings the saddest song I've heard since "God Help the Outcasts" in The Hunchback of Notre Dame. She sings of wanting to return to her family, of wanting to raise a family of her own one day, and her fears of being blasted into the ether, the great unknown. And for what? One small step for chimp, one giant leap for humankind.

The movie ends happily, of course. The chimps make it back from space except for the handy man chimp who risked everything to repair the ship and save everyone else's lives; he's currently floating out space and singing about hitching a ride on a comet (space madness?)), a big parade is thrown, and NASA decides that yes, it's worth risking human lives for space exploration and the space chimps are returned to their families. It's a bittersweet ending, though, since their families are all in zoos. Kids probably didn't notice the issue with that, but I got the point the filmmakers were making.

My gf is an animal lover and she ended up crying at certain points in the movie because she was so moved by the chimp plight. it's a movie every kid should see. Heck, every adult who thinks it's okay to put makeup on animals and wear fur should see it, too.

I liked the bit where Warburton's characters says to Ham, "Are you David Bowie"? I think I was the only one who laughed in the theatre.

I felt the alien planet was beyond weirdness - It looked as though someone puked pastels.

Likely will soar on DVD, not so much in the theatre.
