Eric Powell's The Goon (Now w/ 100% More David Fincher!)

Postby Leckomaniac on Tue Jul 31, 2007 9:29 pm

So one of the pesky people from IESB.net followed Frank Darabont into the men's room at Comic-Con to ask him some questions...ewwwww.

But apparently...Darabont wants to DIRECT a movie version of Eric Powell's The Goon.

Hmmm, as much as I like Darabont and LOVE The Goon, I don't see the point of making a movie... what makes The Goon great is its "subtle" comicbook humor and lately the artwork as well... in terms of a concept, it's not *that* original, mostly plays as an homage to pulp fiction of yesteryear... with the exception of the giant Spanish lizard butler. That dude's just friggin' hilarious, pure genius concentrated on the comic page.

The main page is reporting that David Fincher has now optioned Eric Powell's fantastic comic The Goon and is looking to do the feature all CG via Blur Studios. Their work on A Gentleman's Duel is more than great.

I say hoorah. I would have preferred a traditional 2D crazed Disney looking animated flick but a 3D one will probably do just as well. I'm glad to see with such a perfect property for animation that the immediate knee jerk reaction to do it live action has been quashed.

For those not familiar with The Goon, shame on you. Check out more on Dark Horse's site and go grab some trades from amazon post haste before old Frankie gives you a knife to the eye.

EDITED: That's what I get for reading too quickly. This makes more sense too since he was supposedly working with Blur on the segment he planed to direct for that new Heavy Metal film.

Looks okay. It sounds sort of like a Hellboy clone, without the Hell stuff.

I really hope Hellboy rocks the box office this summer, but for some reason I feel like it's going to get lost in the shuffle. Which is a shame.

Yeah it's got its own style which is very un-Hellboy, although Eric Powell does remind me of Mike Mignola for some odd reason. You should check out an ish or two of the comic Nacho, it's pretty good stuff.

The Goon and Hellboy are similar in that they are both tough-talking asskickers who battle the supernatural. After that, the similarities pretty much stop.

/likes both
//looking forward to this movie

Yeah that's a really beautiful poster... Ribbons are you still following the comic? I think way back when we discussed it at some point, no?

Yeah, we did; I don't think I've read in an issue in over a year though. I haven't really been following comics in general for a while.

Issue 30 is about to come out and it's still a pretty consistent and solid series... Powell has since begun pushing a larger arc and secondary characters begin to play larger roles in the proceedings. The humor and violence are still there, though. The artwork has also changed, it's more "painterly" nowadays, which I find to be an improvement.

According to Eric Powell, Paul Giamatti and Clancy Motherfucking Brown are doing voicework for The Goon:

Thank you, Zoners, for the kindness, tolerance, and enlightenment you've shared with me. It may not have been deserved, but it was greatly appreciated nonetheless. Soupy twist.

I don't know much about this franchise or Mr. Eric Powell(or that he lived here near me of all things or grew up in nearby Mt. Juliet) but I thought I'd add this to the thread. It's not much but I think you'll enjoy the read.
