Monsters vs. Aliens

Postby Pacino86845 on Tue Aug 05, 2008 4:49 am

This is a good day for Grande Rojo, I love it when he posts shit like this: Dreamworks' next (?) animated film shall be MONSTERS VS ALIENS

I pretty much agree with Grande Rojo's three favorite Dreamworks animated films: Over the Hedge, Antz and Kung Fu Panda... with the latter leading the pack. Not since Snakes on a Plane has a film title been so self-explanatory, and I'm glad to see that Kung Fu Panda was only the first step in a new direction for Dreamworks animation.

Here's a promo pic:

I always liked Prince of Egypt, but that seems to be the odd man out.

But wasn't that like, 2D? BAH!!!

Here's the leaked trailer, catch it while you can: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DIW1KS6XBpU

Heh, actually I'm not really impressed... it looks like silly fun, but it lacks a certain je ne sais quoi.

That was Seth Rogan's voice as the gelatenous blob, wasn't it :x

TAKE A FUCKING BREAK ALREADY!

As with most, check that, all Dreamworks and Pixar movies, I snicker slightly at some of the jokes, but ultimately find them forgettable and never on my "too see" list.

So far I've never been convinced Dreamworks animation have come up with anything particularly wonderful. They had the first Shrek which was great reinvention of the fairy tale them, but even that's been run into the ground now. Their other films have been fairly reactionary efforts other similar films and only seem to concentrate on being stuffed animal parades with star voice casts.

I agree completely... I consider Kung Fu Panda to be the best thing they have done, but by that I mean that it is only better than a couple of Pixar's, IMO, "lesser" films.

The only lesser Pixar film is Cars in my mind. And you're right, Kung Fu Panda was a bit better than that.

I guess I'm really curious how they will utilize the 3D, especially with the Golden Gate bridge destruction scene. Often these animated 3D films don't utilize the 3D enough OR they go overboard with the 3D and the story just becomes secondary and really quite bad (see Fly Me to the Moon).

Dreamworks has really upped their game - they had some stunning visuals with KFP and I'm hopeful for more of the same with MvA.

Oh don't do it man, don't even think about seeing it. I thought that the idea was cool and the animation looks great going by the trailers but it was complete and utter balls I asked god for the time back to my life. It's a movie for preschoolers not for tweens/teens like they advertised. It was just a joke, a complete and utter joke.

Alien's V Monsters does look interesting. I think that Dreamworks problem with it's animated films is that an accountant is in charge of approving any changes. (not that I know but it feels like someone who hasn't actually make films/tv/anything creative makes the decisions...) The films always sound interesting, like 'over the hedge'... the premise was a good one, and it could have totally played out like a Toy Story or Bugs Life. Then something happens. It feels like a list of A grade actors is looked up on IMDB and they pick names; moronic research groups are missing the point with un-experienced producers listening too much to what they have to say. There's always a feeling that a very heavy studio hand is grinding most of the original ideas down to the bone. Pixar seemed to control Disney's execs and play their own game. It was the strength of the Senior team, and the 'surprising' success that kept them going. I mean they're second film was 'Toy Story 2', and obvious studio move but they managed to make it they're own. And don't get me started on Kung-fu Panda... I really liked that film and believe that it should be first of many KFP flicks....(it goes something like ...' could be a return to serial flicks...' and a great platform to launch grander flicks and spin-offs with ease', etc... etc).

This one looks charming, and kinda funny. I played the demo of the xbox game (following the usual formula of Movie games lots of the catch phrases and humour is directly transplanted) and it was a good tease of what's to come.

It's pretty good. Jack Black is a really good voice actor and the story, although 90% setup, is a cute one. The fight scenes are really well done and the CGI looks great. it's not groundbreaking, but not everything needs to be in the 3d animated flicks.

Tapehead and I saw this yesterday in 'REAL-D' or 3D for those not in the know. I enjoyed the whole thing a bit but it was aimed at a younger audience then I was expecting. The story is purposely loose and non-committal so that the characters can do all of the cool things that the animators envisaged when they pitched the thing. Voice acting was solid, other then Hugh Laurie's overly comic rendition of "Dr. Cockroach Ph.D" it was all pretty good. The visuals looked on par with most Dreamworks animated projects these days... clean, bright and enjoyable but nothing new. Basically it's a fun romp for the kids with some cool ass technology for the nerds out there.
