But Avatar beats it. Avatar doesn't demand that you buy into some ridiculous quasi-philosophical nonsense to make its point, and Avatar has visuals that are better than any in movie history.

I disagree. One, I do think The Matrix is better. Two, The Matrix doesn't DEMAND you buy into anything. It makes you think. It gives your brain something to work on, to figure out, while you watch some awesome, kick-ass, never seen before in American cinema action that ROCKS!

I agree with Thomas. The Matrix does not require you to buy into anything. The "heroes" in it are simply fighting for mankind's right to know the nature of his reality. I don't think that's any more of an fringe philosophy than the enivironmentalist earth-spirit stuff that Avatar requires you to buy into in order for its climax to work.

And I think we all kinda indentified with Cypher and Mouse a bit when they preferred illusion to reality in the form of their matrix streak and lady in red dress. The Matrix sequels also further developed the point that man had the right to know the nature of his reality and that machines had the right to profit off of providing man an illusion and so they worked out a truce.

I think that Avatar (and The Hangover) was included more as a "shit we gotta put a couple of popular movies in even though we know they have no chance of winning"

and this is coming from someone that liked Avatar but seriously it's script was not it's strong point

EXACTLY. Another case of The Hurt Locker's overratedness.

Scene 1. Man gets blown up by a bomb.
Scene 2. Man defuses a bomb.
Scene 3. Man defuses a bomb.
Scene 4.Man defuses a bomb.
Scene 5.Man defuses a bomb.
Scene 6. Man defuses a bomb.
Scene 7. Man defuses a bomb.
Scene 8. Man defuses a bomb.

THE HANGOVER?!!?
Infantile scenes of post drunkedness that any Chav after a night out could write down if 1. They could remember and 2. Could write. The fact that it probably WAS written eventually by some Chav like Struggling Background Artist out there I guess is the reason for the award as for such a prat it was some kind of accomplishment.

500 Days of Summer. It's a Rom-Com. I rest my case.

A Serious Man.
It made Jews look boring. Had a soundtrack full of unintelligeable Jewish songs. That were boring too.

You haven't even seen this film. What right do you have to post in this thread, let alone post links about the film elsewhere?

Perhaps if you stopped watching crap like 24 and actually got off your ass to see this film, or could get others off THEIR ass to do a Meet Up on it...

If camaron did borrow a fair amount of his script/idea from a previously published comic book, and say more than enough of that material can be seen to have driven this project I wonder if that would be enough to get the comic book creator(s) a fair share of the prize/awards.

I propose a break in to the Cameron Crib, have a peep and find out if a copy of A Guy Named Joe is in there. Oh no, that's Spielberg and Always. What about Meet Joe Black? Oh I mean, My Name Is Joe, What Are You Gonna Do About It?

Seeing as everything named Joe equates a remake or adaptation, I think we got Cameron cornered here.

SO. What do you all think of "AVATAR", now?
O how happy the lack of 500-lb. PC-locked shut-ins with garbage bags of cheese puffs! (btw, I know that guy. He's a very kind soul and not an ounce over 400)
And how many of you (sometimes correct!) nay-sayers and fun-pokers are now curious to check out the game world that inspired many of the magical elements of AVATAR? Hmmmm??

This movie had a budget of @ 400 million. As of now, only 3 or 4 weeks after opening, it has grossed OVER that much, worldwide. So far.
I think they did and INCREDIBLE JOB with the CG elements, and with the artwork and concepts. I fell instantly in love with the world they created. However...
Who else out there could have guessed the storyline and outcome without ever seeing a single frame? Especially after the 1st hour.

I dunno, upon further introspection, I would have to say that Jesus was more of a vampire jew carpenter and probably not a very good carpenter. He had a creepy blood fixation even before he croaked.

My Avatar review; Wheeeeee!

Seriously, this was the most fun I have ever had at the movies; well, to be honest, finger-banging Tammy Teekens while we were supposed to watching “Next of Kin” was the most fun I have ever had at the movies, but Jim Cameron would be hard pressed to recreate that event, so I will take his offering; the glorious, 2.5 hour 3D nature-coaster thrill ride with a heart. It was like being on the ‘Back to the Future’ ride at Universal Studios, if you actually gave a shit about what was still happing inside the ride after you left it.

Does any of the last paragraph make sense? Probably not. But it best sums my feelings toward this fucking fun as hell movie. Are there plot holes you could fly a Great Leonopteryx through? Sure. Has this basic plot been done a thousand times? Yep. Was it left wide open for a sequel? Sweet lord of hosts, yes!

See, for The Unikrunks, all that negative-Nancy shit did not affect our experience. The visuals were stunning, the story worked, the acting was pretty good (There were no “I hate sand, it gets everywhere”, sullen hero moments), and we found the immersion into Pandora so fascinating that we simply cannot wait to get back there…just like I assume the corporation goons from the film were feeling as they disembarked back to their ship.

I give this movie 8 out of 10 thumbs up on the unikrunk scale of goodness.
