Modern Art: Movie Posters

PostPosted: Tue Apr 04, 2006 8:33 pm

I didn't see a topic anywhere on this, so I figured I'd start it.

When I was a kid, the art I displayed on my walls was always of the movie poster variety.

They usually matched a favorite movie of mine, but not always.

Some favorites:

Obviously, the majority of my picks are from the '80s and early '90s since that's when I was heaviest in my poster collecting. I'm sure many of you will have a wider range of tastes and perhaps clue me in on some interesting posters I've missed out on.

So, what are some of your favorite movie posters, hmmm??? :)

i was always partial to the banned poster for friday the 13th part 8 - jason takes manhattan. you know the one that the state of new york sued paramount over, and they stopped using it. the one that has jason hacking through the heart in the "I (heart) NY" logo. i actually still have that poster somewhere.....

you know, ive often lamented that i just didnt have enough walls to display every star wars poster there was. lugz, you just solved my problem for me.

Brock, don't shortsheet yourself again...instead use your original goal, the nobler option, as motivation to move out of your parents' basement.

I know this is off-thread, but does anyone know if
this out-of-order posting bullshit ever going away?

Interesting...Brock is posting from the not-too-distant future...time-space continuum be damned!

I love the Indiana Jones ones--they are a nod to the 40's posters, but then with the really great 80's illustrations.

SW prequels are hit and miss, this one was my favorite:
Image

The LOTR ones were all awesome. I have this one on my wall. I don't think it shall ever come down. It was a tough call because all the ROTK ones were great and I wish I had room for them all.
Image

I'm sorry the movie didn't get released, because I thought it was a waste of a great poster. It has the original Beowulf manuscript as the background--classy!!

When I was 17, I had this on the outside side of my bedroom door, to keep my family out, and to stop pestering me.

hahahaha but its so warm down here.
just kidding.
but seriously, thanks for pouring salt in an open wound. my parents kicked me the fuck out of their basement a long time ago. why, it was just prior to my 45th birthday, if im not mistaken. boy that was a long time ago. you know the years just start to turn into a blur when you have lived in a refridgerator box next to a dumpster brand dumpster in an alley behind a porno shop for as long as i have. i guess i should amend my original statement to the more accurate "you know, ive often lamented that i just didnt have enough space in my refridgerator box in an alley, to display every star wars poster there was".

When it comes to Star Wars posters, I love the two classic ANH ones, the TESB teaser, Revenge of the Jedi, and the TPM teaser.

The absolute worst Star Wars poster has to be:

Y'know Brock, now that Burl vacated the premises, it's a dead-heat between you, Havoc, and Flumm for who makes me laugh the most.

I can't consider Kirk, because he scares me just a little.

Oh, and as for the thread, these three were up on my wall all through college (1989-1993)

Image Image Image

I didn't like Roxy Carmichael so much, in fact I'm pretty sure I never watched the whole thing, but I sure did love me some Winona Ryder back in the day...

Okay...maybe the 'Roxy' one wasn't always up on the wall...if you get what I'm saying.

This was the perfect summer movie poster. You got wound up just looking at it. The Jack Sparrow variation is currently being destroyed on our bathroom wall from the moisture...wait, that sounds creepy.

Too bad Disney is being so fucking cheap to recycle it for the sequel!!

Image

The Troy advance poster with Hector and Achilles battling was well done. It's sad when the poster is cooler than the movie, isn't it? Here's the one half, I can't find poor Hector.

Kirk...I suppose mostly your 'location'...and your affiliation with Adrian Zmed during the 'T.J. Hooker' years...

If my calculations are correct, when this baby hits eighty-eight miles per hour... you're gonna see some serious shit.

the big 6 footer, now that deserves a tag.

Does that mean, that another part of you is the size of a toenail or something.

EDIT. Holee sheet, look how Kilgore's comment was made that no one had tagged Lugz's 6 foot comment, but that post appears, before mine, even though it was posted afterwards.

Man this Post hopping has gotta stop.

I do not. The few times I looked for it, it was sold out at Rick's Movie Posters (where I got the Good,Bad poster and my Clerks poster)

I LOVE this poster. So simple, and it perfectly reflects a major theme from the film.

Image

LOVE this image of Hellboy.

Image

LOTR feels like an instant classic in every respect, and posters like this fit the bill.

Image

This Snatch poster is simple and cool, just gives an idea of the characters and the attitude.

Image

Easily my favorite of any of the Matrix posters. Sucks it was only used internationally.

My ex-girlfriend's uncle painted this. That's my obscure-relation claim to fame.

Has anybody else noticed the similarities to Army of Darkness and Mallrats posters?

Anyway, one of my favorite movie posters is...

I've only ever seen that one on the internet, but it's badass reguardless.

Wow that is nice. I miss those days when posters were painting rather than photo manipulations.....even if they were before I was born. I recommend the book What It Is What It Was for some fantastic painted black-sploitation posters.

Unexpected, and most appriciated Kilgore.

I consider being in the same catorgory as Brock for anything, an honour indeed. So, thank you kind sir!

Oh, and just incase you were wondering, I'm not forgetting him, because I too laugh a lot at Havoc...

...but for very different reasons.

:o

So to actually to get to the actual topic of the thread...

I was browsing around, as I'm likely to forget as many of my favourites with this sort of thing, as I am to remember, and I came across this link...

Just simply too many to point out, but it's absoloutely worth checking out, as it's quite possible you won't have seen a lot of these.

I'm betting they're both nods to the work of Frank Frazetta.

There was an advance poster for Ocean's 11 that I thought was pretty cool.

It was similar to this:
Image

One of my favorites was an advance poster for Batman Returns.

It was much like the official poster

Image

only it was mostly white snow with more of the bat symbol covered in snow, and there was only one word on it: Returns

Here are some of my favorites...

How are you gonna screw with Clint Eastwood if he's making that face?

Oh, and this came before Army of Darkness

Image

This is pretty awesome, too...

D'oh. Doglips beat me to it with the Saul Bass love. That one for The Man with the Golden Arm is going on my wall as soon as I can find a reasonably-priced copy of it. There are many fantastic Drew Struzan ones, but I doubt my missus would be up for having them on the wall of our living room.

I have this on the wall of my dingy little computer room:

I love this poster from the Forbidden Planet. I haven't worked out how to add images to my post but you can see it on Allposters.co.uk. What I love about it is, apart from showing Robbie the Robot, how little it resembles what is in the film.

I always liked the simple movie posters that don't show actors, they just capture the spirit of the film.
