I still think this movie looks more interesting than M. Night's last two films ever did, but that doesn't mean it won't be a crapfest.

Wahlberg's performance in that clip isn't any worse than the performance of any other actor. He's just got that much more to say. It's hard to do good work when you're handed crap.

The title The Happening sounds like a '60s psychedelic freak-out movie.

i HATE the title. not sure if the movie will get any better response from me, still, the knee-jerk anti-M.Night stuff has gotten to the oversaturation point where i tune it all out.

I disliked The Village. The twist seemed in that case to be a cheat. I'm not sure I ever understood the twist in Signs. I passed on Lady in the Water and have heard enough about it that I'm glad I did. The Happening sounds as if MNS decided he needed to jump-start his career by throwing a real twist at the audience, that being the highly graphic, continual violence.

I just got word on some new major SPOILERS!

It turns out at the end of the film, everyone finds out that they're pilgrims living during contemporary days. Basically the twist ending of The Village except reversed. That is one everyone is killing themselves, because they're so blown away by all this new technology.

Which part? The bad dialogue? The totally anticipated "surprise twist" ending? The egotisitcal cameo for himself? The utterly hackneyed filmography*? The totally alf plotlines?

Actually 'filmography' would more properly refer to M.Night's body of work rather than his technique, as the word itself derives from the literary term 'bibliography'. I wouldn't normally do this kind of thing, but after a good amount of posts relating to Zooey Deschanel's 'bewbs', I didn't feel it would ruin the flow of conversation too much.

Sixth Sense was good, Unbreakable was ok, and from there most agree it's headed downwards (personally I kinda liked the Village)

though in retrospect, it wasn't very funny.

and of course, the show was called "What's Happening!!"...

Sounds like it's going to be three duds in a row for M. Night Shyamalan. Maybe he should take a leave of absence and try to figure out how to get back on track. Or maybe he's tapped out and should consider directing something he didn't write himself.

I'm assuming (without seeing it yet, but from seeing a few scenes, and checking out some reviews) M. Night was probably going for something very specific with the acting and dialogue.
It just sounds like a lot of people might not like what he attempted.

I heard one reviewer say he hasn't heard dialogue this horrible since the bad sci-fi films of the 50's...
But who knows...I'm still hoping to check it out...
It just seems that M. Night is trying too hard to experiment and "evolve" as a filmmaker that he's not trying as hard to just entertain...
It's like an actor that's desperately trying to win an award...all their decisions lead them (hopefully) to that one goal...but they forget to sometimes entertain the audience as they try to prove something to a different set of people...and usually trying to prove something to themselves...

Basically, I think he's trying to hard, and then he fails...which causes him to try harder and harder and it's a bit of a fucking circle...
That being said, Lady in the Water and The Village got some horrible reviews as well, so I'll see what happens...

In the recent TV spots, Shyamalan has been telling us how it's the scariest movie he's ever made and that he's shocked by some of the things he shows in the film. This appears to have been hyperbole on a grand scale.

It is rubbish.

None of the tension...none of the chills....none of the intensity that I was expecting. A lot of it is downright laughable.

Marky Mark is not a bad actor. But he is quite miscast in this (although a lot of these lines would sound a little iffy coming from anyone). Zooey Deschanel is her usual unconvincing self.

A lot of people, including us, were laughing through it. I remember seeing Signs in the cinema a few years back and you weren't even aware of the audience till the lights rose.

I wonder if Kathleen Kennedy and Frank Marshall did something magical to help M. Night's first few movies get to be what they were.

I might head out to the cinemas tonight just to see how ticket sales were going on both Hulk and Happening.

You go out to cinemas to check ticket sales? Couldn't you go and watch something too while you're there?

Duh that would screw up his numbers.

of course, the Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle of Box Office Numbers... one cannot observe the box office of a film without somehow changing it.

Anyone remember a movie from the 70s (I think it was made for TV) where every dog in the world turn evil and they wanted to kill Leslie Nielson or something? I don't remember what it's called, but that was kind of like the Happening? Or that other cheese-as-shit Watcher in the Woods movie? God I barely remember that, but I do remember lots of trees blowing around. Now THAT was the Happening. Remember how eery it watching In Search Of where you had episodes like the one about bigfoot where to connote how terrifying bigfoot is, the camera would dash madly from treeline to treeline? That was so Happening. Or perhaps you remember the crucial masterpiece The Legend of Boggy Creek, where the titular monster actually get's his own ballad! That's fucking Happening.

I guess my point is this, Happening is NOT a bad movie. No, it's actually made really well, but like several charmer TV movies, 80s low budget shockers, and TV shows about the paranormal with the budget that is about 1/100 the amount of, say, a standard episode of Welcome Back Cotter. I mean, M. Night has people running from the WIND people. No that's not terrifying. Fuck it's downright silly, but fuck all if it ain't endearing... at least to me. I like that this movie where's it's cheesiness on it's sleeve. Watching people tromp through the countryside, trying to figure out WHAT'S HAPPENING, and encountering one weird old crone, I couldn't help but think that M. Night, much like myself, had spent his rainy week-day afternoons watching the Million Dollar Movie, and on the nice days, he might venture out with his friends and in a fit of imagination, suddenly the wind is out to KILL YOU, or a river is made of lava, or that abandoned house is full of ASSHOLES, OR THE WIND IS GOING TO FUCKING MURDER YOU! THE WIND! THE WIIIIIIIIIND.

So setting aside the feelings of nostalgia this movie brought back for me, is it any good? Not really. All the hardcore parts are in the trailer except for maybe ONE, and even the ones in the trailer are so badly filmed they look like outtakes from--haha you guessed it--cheesy 80s horror movies. I swear it almost seemed like a couple of big kills were added in later to spice shit up a bit. The movie is just a bit juvenile. I mean really... one crucial, and admittedly suspenseful scene, has a small group of survivors on one side of a hill listening as a group of survivors from the other side of the hill off themselves. Super Science Teacher Elliot has to do a quick word problem in his head to try and figure out why the other group is MURDERED BY THE WIND, and his group isn't. He does all this scientific analysis just in time to divide his group of people so the WIND WON'T MURDER a larger group. Because that's the way the wind is. It starts off wanting to murder like a whole city, but then it's like "country folk are good killin' too!" So yeah the whole scene just smacked of me and my friends out on a lazy sunday in the autumn, bored out of our minds, and suddenly the wind picks up and we all run acting like the WIND IS GOING TO MURDER US! But then somewhere along the way one of us shouts, "THERE'S TOO MANY OF US! WE NEED TO SPLIT UP OR THE WIND WILL MURDER US ALL". Then we break and and some of us pretend to die, but others live on to fight the wind another day. It's that kind of juvenile. It's HYSTERICALLY juvenile.

The best part of the whole movie comes toward the end when Elliot, his wife and the unnecessary moppit hold up with old crone Betty Buckley. Elliots wife is concerned about staying there, but Elliot, always the level head thinks they can deal with Buckley. But then Buckley appears at the end of a hallway and flips out with "I HEAR YOU WHISPERING! YOU'RE GOING TO STEAL FROM ME! YOU'RE GOING TO MURDER ME IN MY SLEEP!" He performance should earn her an OSCAR because I flipped out and started laughing hysterically. She was like every crazy old lady from every movie every made... all condensed into betty fucking buckley. It was totally bad ass!

Man I am rambling. So the movie is shit, and I loved it. I would rate it above The Village, but far below Sixth Sense and Unbreakable. But HEY, it was better than Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Dull!

did anyone pass wind at the approaching killer wind?

are flatulists safe?
Personally, I'm an atheist in the voting booth and a theist in the movie theatre. I separate the morality of religion with the spirituality and solace of it. There is something boring about atheism.

No one thought of that! You're so juvenile, you could be a movie director!
