Big Trouble in Little China Discussion / Jack Burton Quotes

Postby King Psyz on Tue Apr 17, 2007 2:01 am

OK so seriously, this has to be one of the best underated guilty pleasure movies of all time.

It's got everything, Kurt Russel, Kung Fu, Magic, Demons, Neon, Guns, Girls, Skeletons, Monsters, Dungeons, Thinly Veiled sexual and drug innuendo... The perfect movie.

I love it it so much I hate it for not being part one of many. Jack Burton should have been the Rocky, or Rambo of the era.

I would love to spend my money watching more adventures from the cab of the pork chop express every so often.

Somone call Kurt Russel and tell him Stuntman Mike was just the begining and to get ready to shake the pillars of heaven again... No horseshit.

Holy Hell do I love BTILC. I watched it so much growing up it isn't even funny.

Kim Cattrell was smoking hot. And the villains were just awesome. It was Indiana Jones with chinese myth, fantasy, and kung fu. Jebus that film DID have everything.

seriously, the only fault in that movie is it left me wanting more and never delivered...

you know if they struck that kind of gold in the last 5 years we'd be seeing BTILC 5: The Reckoning of the Bloodening Part 3 this summer...

BTILC is a brilliant film, from start to finish. Those 3 elemental gods were great villains - the whole climactic battle was class, through and through.

I'm kinda glad they didn't go on and make 3 or 4 more as usually when that happens the quality gets diluted each time around - but it'd be great if they did a follow-up now. I want Shane Black to pen it - and it'd be best if they stayed with Russell and just did a flick about how he had gone back to the US and vowed never to return....only for events to conspire against him 20 years later.

With hilarious consequences and high-octane action, of course.

Always loved Kurt's John Wayne swagger/delivery as Jack Burton.
Easily the most entertaining ( although The Thing is John's masterpiece ) of Carpenter's flicks, it displays a goofy sensibility & charm throughout that only appears in flashs of his other work.
Jillian loves this one.
Me too.

I love this film. But it does have one serious flaw: WAY too much exposition.

That said, the fight at the funeral is to this day one of the best choreographed fight scenes in cinema history.

And of course, the always watchable Kurt Russell delivering great one-liners as John Wayne is not to be missed.

4/5

BTILC is one of the Movie Geek Rites of Passage. If you dont know or love this movie, you aint no movie geek! If you were a kid in the 80s (I was 12 when this came out) it was right up there with stuff like Rambo and Die Hard on the cool film list.

SOMEone was up late watching cable :) I saw this was on last night when I went to bed, so I started watching it and fell asleep around Jack and Wang getting locked up (right after the Hell of the Upside Down Sinners).

I can't agree with the "too much exposition" criticism, because to me, it's all done with a wink. Paraphrasing: "Lo-Pan, Mr. DAVID Lo-Pan, owner of the Wing Kong importing business, a man who is SO reclusive that no one has even seen this guy in YEARS?!" That is gold, baby!

Some of the best deadpan realistic humor is in this movie. A few examples:

"<translates Chinese from a sign> The Hell of Boiling Oil."
"You're kidding!"
"Yah, I am, it says 'Keep Out.'"

"I'd go in there, but--"
"I know, there's something wrong with your face."

"Hollow?"
"Hollow."
"Fuck it."

"A Six-Demon bag!"
"Great, a Six-Demon bag, fantastic, what's in it, Egg?"

As good as The Thing is, BTILC for me is his best movie. Perfect from beginning to end, basically no sequel would have been able to live up to the original. It would be a blessing and a curse for them to do a new one now (which won't happen). I can appreciate the one-shot nature of the story, a semi-competent anti-hero stumbles into and through a once in a lifetime adventure of epic magnitude. It's not the kind of story that lends itself well to a sequel. Honestly, I think the absolute best I could hope for is that somewhere down the line, we get a Carpenter film with a cameo from Jack Burton. Maybe sitting in a bar somewhere, telling the story about how he ran over an abomination in the eyes of God that decided to stow away on the back of his truck one dark and stormy night when the thunder was strong enough to shake the pillars of heaven, driving home from San Francisco Chinatown... THAT would be the best followup ever.

Best bit of dialoge:

"Hey Wang, these sing-dings..."
-'Chang-Sings'
"They got enemies..."
-'Wing Kong'
"..who wear red turbans?"
(pause)
-'Holy Shit!'

SEE!

More proof that this is the perfect movie!

If movies were math problems, this would be the perfect equation. The E=MC² of motion pictures.

I agree with Fawst too, you can't like Big Trouble in Little China and not absolutely LOVE the exposition. It's such an integral part of the fun that it would be lost if you made it more cerebral.

Some of my favorite scenes are the ones with between Lo Pan and Jack. I love how Jack is so realistic and sarcastic against "Dave's" evil supernatural presence/persona. Thats really why Kurt is so great in the movie, hes this blue collar wiseass who gets thrown into this fantastic situation.

It is the perfect late night movie, you can't top it. I saw this first when I was about 9 or 10 and I couldn't believe a film could be that cool it had absolutely everything I could have thought about putting into a film at that age. Magic, Kung Fu, Badass Henchman a seriously fucked villian, secret passageways, boobytraps, Kim Catrall and the green eyed chinese chick, crazy superpowers and freaky monsters. Ahhh. I love this movie.

what the fuck is wrong with the lot of you? Bad dialog, worse acting, lousy exposition doth not a quality movie make you brain dead jackanapes!

just funnin'.

I love me some BIG Trouble in Little China. I think I'm dating a green eyed woman solely based upon this flick. Lotsa love for Lo Pan, but Egg Shen makes this movie brilliant.

I can't speak for "the King Psyz hit squad", unless you mean the little tyke that's on the way, but I can dodge flung poop like nobody's business...

and the DZAS? Do they even exist as a functional unit anymore? Iconny's "rinsing and repeating", LS is a FilmIck tart, Brainiac is easily distracted by nude pictures of "Gerry" Butler (ditto LS on that score), DJJ has gone soft since she's found love...

Of course by tart, I mean that I'll behave like a man-eating bitch.

Please tell me you twirled your mustache when you said that, monsieur.

Anyway...I totally need to rent Big Trouble in Little China when my damn thesis is done, because it's been years. Years and years. Maybe it'll come on cable again so I can geek out with you all. But damn, was Kurt Russell hot in the 80's.

I must defend my Zoner reputation now that KC has cast doubt upon it! ;)

Except the nude Gerry Butler pictures thing, that's totally true.

It is really sad how this movie flopped worse than "Grindhouse", the current DVD is great and has a pretty decent commentary from John and Kurt, (though not as good as Escape from New York). It is the costumes, the set design, the make-up and above it's imaginative use of Chinese mythology that make it stand out as a truly oddball one of kind fantasy movie. Kim Cattrall on my last viewing seemed to slightly misjudge her character, in regards to comedy timing and speech pattern, but hey, it still kicks ass.

She's nice to look at, but she's barely an actress and her performance is a glaring false note. Too arch. Too strained.
