This film is sort of flying under the radar after the Gosling firing. Wonder how it's all shaping up. The book was okay, and I think it has the potential to be a better film.

Indeed it is flying under the radar.
A year and two months since the last posting on it.... wow!

First look at 'Lovely Bones'

Image

"I found the book to be curiously optimistic," Jackson says by e-mail from New Zealand, where he's finishing the film. "I felt inspired by Susie's struggle to come to terms with her own death. In the face of overwhelming grief, she finds hope. She holds on to love, and by doing so, she transcends the horror of her murder."

Don't expect Lord of the Rings-style special effects to create a nether world, Jackson says. The film, which stars Saoirse Ronan as Susie and Stanley Tucci as her killer, proved one of Jackson's toughest, particularly scenes of the child's afterlife.

"It's God-less in the sense that when Susie dies, she finds herself caught in a place between Earth and heaven — she is in an 'In-Between,' as Alice Sebold calls it." When she moves on, "we're happy for audiences to imagine this new world in whatever way makes them comfortable."

Just to save Butcher the hassle, I'll also link this-
Empire's exclusive pic (with crummy watermark).
Thank you, Zoners, for the kindness, tolerance, and enlightenment you've shared with me. It may not have been deserved, but it was greatly appreciated nonetheless. Soupy twist.

Wow. I don't know how it will play out in the film, but anyone not wanting to know who the killer is better not be reading around. Everyone seems to be okay with yelling out that it's Stanley Tucci.

Oh, and if that's Wahlberg in the pic above, I'm a bit impressed, because that's more how I expected the dad to look. When I heard he was cast, I thought that was serious miscasting, but that pic is encouraging. Still think Viggo would have been great, but we'll see how things go.

Well if memory serves correctly the first scene of the book is her being killed so it's not really a spoiler unless they choose not to show his face but seeing as he has little contact with the rest of the characters it's not like it's set up as a whodunnit surprise twist ending.

Correct - the killer is known to his victim and is named almost immediately. The horror of the situation, beyond the murder itself, is in our knowing who it is, and that he continues to live his life mere doors away from the grieving, unsuspecting family.

Certainly with the book, the narrative is more concerned with the effects of the death on the surviving family members - how it almost destroys but ultimately heals them - than it is with who the killer is and whether he is caught.

Yeah, I know the killer is shown from the beginning, but a lot of the early reports that I see list him as "the neighbor" and now it seems that they're just going with the "killer/rapist." I just didn't know how PJ would show that first scene. Maybe his face is hidden and even though we suspect, we sort of find out as the father does or something. Just random thoughts.

Good Detective work! Possibly, then. Do you think that approach would suit the film version better? I think I prefer the book's approach - knowing the killer, seeing him live his lfe, carrying on as normal in close proximity to the family and community he has devastated.

Mark Wahlberg 's an interesting choice, he should be good in the role. Make this film 10 years earlier and I'd have wanted either David Morse or Tim Robbins.

the most interesting part of that trailer was the opening part that says "this preview has been approved for APPROPRIATE audiences"... what exactly is the APPROPRIATE audience?

anyway, having read the book (and thought it was a bit overrated myself) the trailer feels a bit uneven in tone, especially when it shifts to an action-thriller with the murderer. they seem to focus more on that aspect of the story than the book did, but it is a trailer trying to put asses in seats, so maybe that shouldn't be a surprise. but i think anyone going in expecting a murder mystery thriller is going to be disappointed, unless jackson made a much different movie than the book.

What Dreams May Come 2

Seem like it might be okay. I'm sure it'll look nice. Don't think Marky Mark will quite fit the father role. Rachel Weisz is wooden at the best of times.

Stanley Tucci look suitably creepy.

That looks fucking excellent. I read the book. I liked it for the most part. This looks like an improvement on what I imagined. Anytime that happens (like with FOTR or TTT) the results are good. When I imagine something better (like ROTK) I'm a bit disappointed. So I think this will be something I'll enjoy.

Was the word "rape" used in the trailer? I don't think so. I'll give Jackson credit. He made this seem appealing to the teeny crowd (aww mom and daughter crap, and boyfriends, etc.) and also to the thriller crowd with the murder mystery stuff. He at least knows how to market a film.

Do we know Jackson cut the trailer? Usually that kind of thing is handled by companies. Personally I didn't like it, probably for the same reason you did (seemed really schizophrenic), but I know next to nothing about the story so it's hard to say.

Not PJ personally, but Wingnut/Weta (I don't think he'd do his own intro otherwise) - and I would further speculate to say that the voice over is an addition at the behest of the the studio. It's interesting that both versions are about on the internet.

Aye I sorta go the other way. I like the stuff that goes on in our world, all the personal intimate human stuff. Those visuals of the in between world though. Sigh. Too computery. Or shall I say, it just doesn't look that natural. Something about the movement or layout of images in the shots. Looking for the correct word but not finding it here.... I dunno, the way that stuff for such dreamlike images seems so clean or crisp, too 'perfectly?' designed when done by what seems to be computer. I just can see it feeling more organic and loads of other descriptive words that I can't put my finger on now if it was made differently. My imagination I think wouldn't have visualised things looking so neat and tidy maybe.

But that's sort of how it's described in the book. It's certainly not natural. It's like the opposite of natural. It's UNnatural. Because it's not really nature at all. It's the after life, or whatever, so it breaks the rules of nature.

Here's what I posted in my 2010 Movie Journal:
Nachopkoolaid wrote:8. The Lovely Bones - Stanley Tucci should get a BSA nomination for this, but there's a lot to dislike about what Jackson's done here. I thought he fumbled the murder scene, and some of the "Inbetween" is too abstract for too long. We need a dramatic hook, not a endless series of pretty pictures. A few of his sins of the past (way too much slo mo) really come back to haunt him here. Some great suspense, but this felt too long, and disjointed. Seemed like there was not enough focus on the family dilemma and there was too much time spent with Susie being ethereal and shit. Oh, but Mark Wahlberg was actually pretty good in this, and I don't think I've ever said that except for maybe The Departed. 5/10.

Seems to give an example of what I've been thinking of late on reflection of him. That Peter Jackson is an overrated indulging director that fanboys jerk off to, too much. One of the very top best directors out there at the moment my arse. Grrrr rant, grrr ranty ranty ratty rant rant ranty.
