TROPIC THUNDER (Now w/ FULL RETARD!)

Postby godzillasushi on Wed Sep 19, 2007 10:02 am

RT wrote:A paid week in Hawaii? With a craft service table? Dude, Matthew McConaughey is so there.

The actor has stepped into the void created when Owen Wilson departed Tropic Thunder, the Ben Stiller comedy that is, according to Variety, about "a group of actors who gather on a remote island to shoot a big-budget war movie and are forced to become the soldiers they are playing."

The role, Variety notes, "amounts to an uncredited cameo," but we doubt McConaughey needs much of an incentive to take any kind of paying gig in Hawaii, particularly one whose cast includes Stiller, Robert Downey Jr., and Jack Black.

Tropic Thunder is scheduled for a 2008 release.

Sounds pretty cool IMO. Lots of funny actors in it.

I don't think that "Tropic Thunder" bit will outdo Cruise as Austin Powers. :D

that sounds funny, but I don't know how they'll play it (goofy Stiller acting? Or will they try and play it "seriously"). I've personally grown really bored with anything Stiller does, and I've never really like the Jack Black sctick either. But I reserve judgement until March 17th!

Yeah I'm down with Stiller Directing (Cable Guy is hilariously dark IMO) but as a comic actor he's pretty much just a one trick pony, Jack Black has more depth but from the sound of his character it's going to annoy me. Everything else about this film sounds good though so I'll reserve judgement for now.

Stiller's acting is at its goofiest when he's playing it "seriously." I think it sounds funny.

More at EmpireOnline regarding the plot:

Apparently, Stiller got the idea for the movie while shooting Empire Of The Sun

I was trying to guess who the actor was, and was thinking, "Damn, they roughed Cheadle up a lot for this thing;, he looks war-torn'.

Read on to see it my favorite prankster in the world, RDJ.

Top drawer, they get the effect perfectly, without it coming across racist or insensitive. Reading the liner notes on his character, it makes sense, in a comedy kind of way.

Something very comical in the pic:

Image

Please notice that our man RDJ is holding both a pump action shotgun in one hand, and a pistol in the other; this is funny because of the overkill, and the absurdity of combo-ing-up those two weapons. When he needs to reload the shotgun, does he just drop the handgun, or is he going to be pulling off Arnie style, one-hand shotgun pumps.

For some reason, this is really funny to me; I hope it was meant to be.

I think of the one-handed shotgun pumps as Linda Hamilton. Either way, they look badass. Nice prosthetic nose on RDJ. And Stiller's more buff than ever before. Maybe this will be funny. Oh, I hope so. Stiller has such talent and he squanders it unforgivably.

You are dead-on about the one-hand shotgun pumps; that was Hamilton all the way. Arnie was doing the 'spinning-rifle-one-hand-reload (on the bike).

I too, hope this is funny; I have some hope, as this seems a departure from his 'poor guy takes it in the nuts' movie formula. I swear to god though, if this film relies on Stiller's 'uncomfortable man' shtick, it will not do well.

Then again, having JB on the set has got to be good for some fucking inspirado, no? I think a great thing about JB is that he pushes other actors to be great, just to keep up with his frenetic mentality. Plus, he looks like an albino, which is a great turn of hand when looking at RDJ's character.

I'm not going to lie. To me personally, it's no big deal, but you just KNOW there's going to be a bajillion knee jerk jackoffs out there who're going to scream racism at the top of their lungs. If you listen closely you can hear Spike Lee's blood boiling.....

Now having said that, I'm not that enthusiastic about this film at any rate, but with Robert Downey Jr in it like this, it has some hope of actually being cool..... Maybe. We'll see.

Just like Angelina Jolie taking flack for A Mighty Heart. lol

I think it adds to the comedic effect. It's just a shame that people take "political correctness' so seriously they have no sense of humor about things.

No, but that also, would be awesome, for wholly separate reasons. None of them sexual, of course.

Jesus that is a fuckled image. Like, what if the bang bus jerks were stuck on the island with you, always trying to work some exploitive sexual deviancy angle on everyone.

For a teaser that is as good as it gets.

The Downey thing was quite the shocker too. Although I hadn't commented on it I followed it and thought it was brilliant.

Thanks for the link you hot stick!!

It does look quite awesome. As for concerns regarding Stiller, remember that this is the first movie he's directing since Zoolander... we *could* blame all that crap he did between then and now on the fact that the movies and directors sucked. Maybe here where he has sorta "free reign" we'd see some interesting work out of him.

I'm inclined to agree. I still think Zoolander's greatest moment is the arrival of David Bowie.

Our first review!!

The Mother Site wrote:Harry,

Tonight I was able to go with a friend of mine down to Long Beach to see a screening of "Tropic Thunder". Let me first tell you that they had so many people in line to see it they ran it on two screens. While in line, the guy who was running the screening kept telling everyone that this was going to be an "R" rated comedy, and that if you were offended easily to reconsider watching the movie. So my guess is that they are planning on keeping this a hard R, and after watching the film, i cannot see how they could edit it down. So here is my take on the film.

The fake previews lead into the film, and they are fantastic. Each trailer introduced the three main actors, with specific satires of certain genres. Ben Stiller's character plays and action star who has now made at least five sequels to one movie, Jack Black's trailer is the most brilliant satire; a movie about a studly family with all the characters played by Black in heavy prosthetics. The film was called "The Fatties" and the shot at Eddie Murphy's career made everyone in the theatre laugh hysterically. Robert Downey Jr. is the most serious of the actors, his trailer was for a movie called "Satan's Alley", where Downey plays a priest who falls in love with another priest. A great cameo here by Tobey Maguire (the trailer references him as MTV's best kiss award winner). The only other one was a fake commercial, and all i will say about that is "Booty Sweat".

After the trailers the film shifts right into the middle of a scene from "Tropic Thunder", the movie that Stiller, Black, and Downey are all now in. Right away Downey starts stealing the scene, and it is almost scary how he looks and sounds almost nothing like Downey. Spouting blood from helmets and intestines falling out of stomachs happen in over the top war movie fashion, and Jack Black ends up hanging from a helicopter. The scene ends with Stiller in the midst of dying and Downey there to console him. Stiller yells cut and we get our first introduction to the pseudo rivalry between Stiller and Downey that continues throughout the film. I dont know who the actor is that plays the director, but he fits the role well. We get the basic rundown of whats happening on set, including the extremely obscene pyrotechnics guy and Nick Nolte as the soldier who wrote the book on which the movie is being based. The film then moves into a party scene and we are introduced to Jack Blacks drug addiction, Downeys method acting that doesnt stop when the cameras do, and Stiller, being, well, Stiller. The greatest introduction comes when we first see the man behind the funding of "Tropic Thunder", and it is possibly the best surprise of the entire film. This may be a big spoiler for some, so be warned. The hairy, over weight, and now balding billionaire is played by none other than Tom Cruise, spewing the word fuck every chance he can conceivably get. The theatre went
nuts. To see Cruise in a role like this was encouraging. Yes he may be one of the most insane men living on this planet right now, but he is goddamn hilarious in this role. And the decision to keep him coming back throughout the entire movie was a great choice.

Now I dont want to give a description of the entire movie, but I hope this gives an idea of the tone of the film. There are cameos galore, references to almost every film that had an actor play a ALF person, and Jack Black going through heroin withdrawals that lead him to making statements like "I will cradle your balls and swallow your sweet gravy if you let me go..." and talking to a large animal saying "I want to bite your hide skin". However, Downey steals the entire movie, especially the banter between him and the actual African american in the cast (who is supposed to be a rapper turned actor). I was a bit let down with Stiller's performance, and was almost let down by Black's until halfway through the film when he started going through withdrawals in the middle of the Vietnam Jungle. One other thing i could have done without is the leader of the Vietnamese heroin ring who captures the cast is played by a very unconvincing twelve year old, literally. But making up for that is Tom Cruise dancing to awful rap music while trying to convince Stiller's agent, played by none other than Matt McConaughey, to let Stiller die in the jungle.

The film is full of incredible cameos and genuinely hilarious performances. It definitely is one of the better satirical comedies I have seen in a long time. It is also great to see Jack Black and Ben Stiller in a good R rated comedy again. However, Robert Downey comes
out on top with the best performance. I laughed hard and consistently, and in that i felt the film was a great success. Even my roomate, who i thought lived his life emotionless, laughed quite a few times. I cant wait to see this again in august. Hope the review was helpful.
