Dude, you made the main page! (I'm assuming this is you. The word "rubs" was a dead giveaway).

Fried Gold wrote: Hi Harry,

I was one of the "lucky few" to get a ticket to today's Tron Legacy IMAX 3D event in London - via that viral pitcell.com site. Although you'll probably get loads of these, I thought I'd jot down some thoughts for you.

First, the rubs stuff:
- They made us wait a long, long time outside the screen. Too long.
- They only showed us "it" once.
- "It" wasn't long enough.

So what was "it".

That's where the brills stuff comes in:
- WE GOT TO SEE THE NEW TRON LEGACY TRAILER
- Due to timezone shenanigans, it turned out we were to the first audience in the world to see it.
- They gave us a "FLYNN LIVES" t-shirt.
- WE GOT TO SEE THE NEW TRON LEGACY TRAILER

Brief rundown of the trailer:
- A good deal of exposition from Bruce Boxleitner
- An introduction to the main character - Son of Flynn
- A lot of footage from the Tron-world.
- Remember the arcade from the original film? Remember the atmosphere in the arcade, with Flynn being king of his little place. That is what the Tron-world is now like.
- Son of Flynn is thrown into the world, and there is a very cool shot of the Encom laser rearing it's head behind him.

Sadly we only got to see it once which was disappointing, considering how long they made us wait.

But I think, from what I saw and remember, Tron Legacy is going to be great. At the very least, the visuals will be remarkable.

(If you use this, I'm Cosmosboy.)

All the best.

As you've probably gathered, the "event" was a bit of a letdown.

The trailer was cool, but everyone there was expecting more. When the trailer finished there was silence, followed by calls of "show it again", following by a blank look from the Disney guy and everyone being ushered out.

Considering the people seeing it today are the first wave, and will be posting about it everywhere, they should've really pushed the boat out. Disney/marketing company have shot themselves in the foot slightly.

I do have Flynn Lives shirt though. But a couple of free DVDs and a poster would've sweetened the deal/bribed me into giving glowing reports.

Very cool that you gut to see the trailer and made the front page, FG.

Sounds like the trailer is pretty great, but the execution of the "event" was pretty horrible all the way around. For all of the rigamarole leading up to this, you'd think they would have given you more than a 90 second trailer and a t-shirt. FAIL DISNEY!!!!!!

Can't wait to see the trailer tho...

SPOILERS
A Tron Legacy script review has been posted by Blue Sky Disney.
http://blueskydisney.blogspot.com/2010/ ... on-21.html

From Blue Sky Diseny:
Honor Hunter wrote:Naturally, there's the talk of a Tron attraction at Disneyland and various other theme parks. WDI is working on concepts for a Tron experience, but don't expect a fully immersive Tron Legacy attraction by the time the film opens. Any attraction wouldn't be seen in Tommowland until 2012 at the earliest... but that doesn't mean there won't be surprises between now and then.

And here's that Trailer: http://teaser-trailer.com/2010/03/tron-legacy-trailer-leaked.html. It's a mobile phone recording, but it beats having to sit through Alice in Wonderland 3D.

Trailers don't really do much for me, so I'd be pretty pissed if I "flew in from Canada" just to see that. I guess it's OK s'far as those things go, though.

That kinda confirms what people were saying at the screening - that the live-action stuff doesn't appear to be in 3D, only the Tronworld is.

[supercriticalhat]
While quite cool, I think it's an odd trailer for a couple of reasons.

Firstly - If you know nothing about Tron, or don't remember it too well, that trailer possibly isn't going to mean much to you. The thing most of the general public will remember about Tron is 1. Jeff Bridges and 2. the lightcycles. Yet there's isn't a great deal of either in the trailer.

Secondly, I think we were spoiled by that first teaser trailer. While quite cool, that the visuals of the teaser have more impact.

It is very much a trailer for fans of Tron. Whether the wow factor is enough to pull people, I don't know.
[/supercriticalhat]

I still geeked out over that shot of the Recogniser. And also the identity disc focus-shift bit. And I still love the way the atmosphere of the Tronworld now matches that of Flynn's Arcade in the first film.

I just wanted to say thanks for the trailer. There really isn't narrative and because of the CAM it makes it all hard to see. I'm looking forward to the HD trailer online.

I don't see well enough to have made out clearly much of what was in that trailer, but I am somewhat excited. I loved the first film, even though I knew it had major problems. For this one I'd even go hurt my head with 3-D (something I won't do for Avatar).

This coming from a man who is so picky and petty about the quality he wants to get on Avatar that he's still waiting for just FOUR of the very best seats in an IMAX house after all these months, yet for such a long awaited movie like TRON he'll gladly watch it in a shitty mobile phone recorded craphouse Youtube job. You got NO excuse mate.

As stunning as it all does actually look, I still do wonder... Isn't it a bit too much three dimensional men in black suits, girls simply in black (or white) lycra, black vehicles or buildings, actual objects with a bit of light on them, and not enough, ACTUAL light as in the original. That ultra different reality that you've never seen before in this respect, that was the point. Not so much here. Looks a bit too... real?

Well thats because a lot of it is real, with modern technology they could actually just make those light suits and just tweak them a bit in post, makes the film a hell of a lot cheaper to make I'd imagine, plus it's meant to be like what 30 years since the last film, that world has evolved too

Watching it for a third time I think you might be right, it needs more grain and desaturation at least or something, been years since I've seen any of the original though, never sat through the whole film either even though I have seen most of it, always got bored as a kid.

Q: What inspired to go with a more minimalistic look for the character's suits?
K: Ah, I would say that is a combination of things. Mainly, I was really interested in rather than doing the kind of rotoscoping process and backlighting in post, I wanted to build physical suits that actually emit light which you saw a glimpse of. The technology that is available with illuminated fabric kind of resulted in that minimalistic design.

Q: In your original effects test you showed at Comic-Con the light cycles were all CG, they were photo real CG. Was that the plan? Everyone was going to be photo real CG instead of shooting them live with real actors?
K: It depends on the sequence. Our movie has a mixture of techniques whether you are riding a light cycle or in an interior. I wanted to use real lights and real sets as much as possible, but the idea is make that blend seamless so you don't know the difference.

Ah so that's why I have such a hard time understanding it. The Director's an idiot. I wouldn't have gone for such a real world look, he's shot himself in the foot and denoted the actual neon light feel that made it such a 'different world', I woulda just developed that look more, not given the people actual lycra leggings and boots or an actual Batmobile man.

And to piss on people's parades even more, you are incredibly right about the original movie. It is well boring and shit. Halfway through it just dies and dies more until you're hardly watching the climax, mostly 'cos they couldn't keep the humanity alive in the story, I don't care if it's 'cos it's set in a computer, you can't sacrifice that in a film, especially when you STILL can keep that feeling going if you're a skilled storyteller/director. I really hate it when people brag on about how awesome the original is. Either they are shallow themselves or they have actually forgotten how crap it is as it's been such a long time. Exhibit A - me. I bought Tron on DVD a few years back. After halfway through I remembered just how bad it was and had a strong desire to take the film back. The shop had closed down by then.

It's why I don't have the best of feelings for this film, it's still going over that same territory and template that let the '82 movie down.

Oh, but now it's Son of Tron. Gimme a break.

He fail.

Notice he uses the word 'real' a lot in there. Thanks for ruining the point of the look and feel of the unreal world.

In a world...

Where most films turn to CGI when practical effects would do just fine...

The sequel to the first CGI film does the opposite.

TRON: The bastard child of Equilibrium and Ultraviolet

Hehehe, I'm just kidding.

I agree that the "look" is a bit disappointing if we expected something designed with same spirit as the original, but that aside the trailer is pretty awesome.

The trailer was really cool. The pairing of the visuals, which were tantalizing, and that BAD.ASS. score make this a really effective trailer.

This is certainly in my top 3 most anticipated films at the moment.

It's weird... someone pointed out to me that the beginning of this trailer was very 'Dark Knight.' So I watched it again with that in mind, and it really is. Even the color scheme (in the "real world") and the score are kind of Batman-ly. An attempt to subconsciously remind people of that movie, maybe?

I picked up on that as well. The initial score is what kind of got my mind thinking along that way and then the visuals followed on subsequent viewings.

I think that was probably just the marketing folks? I don't know.

Chris Nolan said that Tron was one of his major influences while making his Batman films.

Sigh. Hasn't a potentially visually revolutionary movie like Tron got better things to do?
