One thing's for sure: I'm watching a hell of a lot FEWER movies in 2009 than I did in 2007 or 2008...

And I noticed since the beginning of these journals that my ratings of movies are gravitating more toward the middle for nearly all movies, whereas in 2007 I distinctly remember highly rating quite a few movies. In 2009 nothing really blew me away... I dunno if it's because I've become more jaded or whether the quality of movies (the ones I've seen of course) has been declining in the past couple of years. Probably it's a combination of both.

Maybe in 2010 when Avatar skull-fucks your brain and you give it 34 out of 10 stars you'll start skewing your reviews to be more positive. :-P

I really fell off the job on this month, I apologize I saw movies, I just didn't track them as well as I should have

but I also noticed this month I watched a few movies several times, like I saw Mamma Mia a bunch of times because it was on HBO a ton, i saw I LOVE YOU MAN 3 or 4 times as I showed it to different people, same with FANBOYS

I also THE ROCKER 3 times for some reason not that it was any good just happened to watch it a bunch

GI JOE twice

I feel like such a slacker I really dropped the ball on tracking my movies this summer, I hope I do better in the fall

I only watched Funny People, District 9, Being There, Inglourious Basterds, and Zack and Miri Make a Porno in August.

The only movie that sucked was Zack and Miri... the others were all really good, but I'd put Inglourious Basterds in the lead.

BEST OF AUGUST:

GHOST DOG. Great movie, even if he never used his sword.
DISTRICT 9. By far my favorite film of the summer. I didn't watch any of the other summer movies, though.
COFFY. Pam Grier rocks my pants.

WORST OF AUGUST:

MIRRORS. Pointless.
HORSEMEN. Not sure if I should count this one. I missed the last twenty-five minutes. And by missed I mean I stopped watching it because it sucked.

Drag me to Hell - Not bad.
District 9 - Teh Bom.
Terminator Salvation - Turned it off after 50 secs. WOW, TEH SUCKAGE. I KNEEL BEFORE THEE.
ANTICHRIST - Nasty, should be called Abyss, looked wonderful, but is pretty haunting.
Angels and Demons - Run of the Mill, but a good run and better than Da Vinci.
Adventureland - Spark up a doobie, its a run of the mill teen adventure, with some great bits featuring the park owners.
Inglourious Basterds - Fun
Bruno - Occasionally Hilarious.
Summer Hours - V.enjoyable whimsy.
Exils or Exiles (Tony Gatliff) - Good roadmovie from France all the way to Algeria!

A moment of silence for all those films I forgot about.

And the winner is;

District 9, yay, its the muppetshow!

The best of August for me was Armageddon. I think it's one of Bay's two good films (The Rock being the other).

Harry Potter 6 wasn't bad either, but it fell a bit short of what I expected.

Worst was Rachel Getting Married. Maybe a great performance, but it was just too dysfunctional for me.

True about Armageddon, even if I wouldn't place it over Transformers, The Rock or pretty much anything else I saw last month. It's pretty entertaining, if forgettable, ridiculous and cliché.

Blergh. I haven't been able to watch many movies the last month. I did manage to see Inglourious Basterds and liked it quite a lot but I think my favorite of the month was The Mist.

I HATE when that happens. For the longest time I avoided all possible H@rry Potter spoilers. I wanted to see if I could see all of the films without being aware of how the story ends. I was never sold on reading the books and figured I would put off jumping into them until sometime after all the films were released (if ever).

Then someone in the Zone posted a "Picture of the Day", which was a diagram spoiling a whole bunch of movies, books, etc. Before I knew it, the ending of the Half-Blood Prince was in big letters for god and all to see. I had made it YEARS without being spoiled. I was pissed.

I hope that guy gets shitted on by a pigeon or some equally minor misfortune. But you should still see The Mist. It would obviously be better if you didn't know the ending, but believe me, you'll still probably enjoy the hell out of the movie, spoilers or no spoilers.

INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS. A little surprised that I loved this as much as I did.
PUSH. Enjoyed this one quite a bit.
MARTIN. Great non-zombie Romero film.

WORST OF SEPTEMBER:

POULTRYGEIST: NIGHT OF THE CHICKEN DEAD. Okay, this one shouldn't count. It's Troma, which means it's entertaining despite being shitty.
X-MEN ORIGINS: WOLVERINE. Now this is a real piece of shit. Fuck this movie to death.

I included the very, very disappointing AN EDUCATION. I was really looking forward to that film and it was just bad. There was a solid 30 minutes, but beyond that it is no good.

Sarsgaard did all right with what he had. I don't know, I can't even be bothered to write up any more about this film. BLEH!

I just updated with 35 new films I watched over the last couple of months.

I've already beaten my totals from last year and the year before - and I've still got just over a couple of months left.

I haven't seen a lot of greatness this year.

An average number of really enjoyable (in some way or another) to really good.

And a whole lotta pretty good to average films.

But there's still a good number of fall/winter possibilities that could spin my expectations and theories around a couple more times...

I haven't seen that many films this year... I think the amount of movies I see in the movie theater is about the same as the past two years, but at home I rarely watch a film nowadays.

Best First Time: SORCERER and JAWS (Schider tie)

Worst: crap I don't know didn't really see much stuff new but probably Blade Trinity (did a Blade marathon for Halloween)

BEST OF OCTOBER

A FACE IN THE CROWD. Andy Griffith should've won an Oscar for this.
WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE. It's a weird movie about monsters and things. Based on a popular book by a guy.
DRAG ME TO HELL. Sam Raimi's return to form. Features talking goat.
SORCERER. Some of the most intense sequences put on film. No breasts.
NIGHT OF THE CREEPS. Every bit the classic everyone says. Tom Atkins is hilarious.

WORST OF OCTOBER

TRANSFORMERS: REVENGE OF THE FALLEN. No shit.

I also watched a few Bond pictures and discovered that I like those movies now. GOLDENEYE showed me that Pierce Brosnan actually was a pretty good Bond and could even kick ass convincingly.

This was a good one. I remember seeing it randomly at the New Bev and it was one of those unexpected treats. I believe it was a double feature with Monster Squad.

It also bears a striking resemblance to that James Gunn flick about the town that gets overrun by slug like alien creatures and all the characters have names of famous horror directors...but Iäm giving him the benefit of the doubt that that is a coincidence and not a shameless rip off. (Also everyone overuses the names of famous horror directors for their characters)

Even though this thread is my baby, I haven't been here for a while, but that's because I've been working my ass off and not watching any films. I watch some movies on Halloween, and that was the first thing I had seen since August 22.

So the best film I've seen in a while was Batman 89, and it was of course, great.

But I think the wife and I are going to catch a double feature tomorrow (I'm a bit excited because I haven't seen a film in theatres since watching Harry Potter 6) and we'll be watching Where the Wild Things Are and Carrey's Christmas Carol, so I'll drop in and let you know how those are.

Q: THE WINGED SERPENT. Good B-movie fun.
AFTER DARK, MY SWEET. Jason Patric is crazy good in this.
WHATEVER WORKS. Funny Woody Allen flick.
STAR TREK. A very pleasant surprise.
MATCH POINT. Not a funny Woody Allen flick.

BASKET CASE. Shit in a basket.
BLOOD: THE LAST VAMPIRE. A sexual relationship between the female leads would have improved this greatly.

TWILIGHT. I actually wish this had been shittier. Instead it was just fucking boring.

Made a nice discovery the other day: Truffaut's The Bride Wore Black. Kill Bill fans should check it out. After watching it seems to me I recall it being cited as an influence. I only recorded it because it was Truffaut and the description sounded interesting but it is always fun randomly finding something in Tarantino's bag of tricks. It's like turning on the radio and hearing something the Beastie Boys sampled for Paul's Boutique.

The Ninth Configuration - quite wonderfully bizarre at times, some good quotable dialogue, and decent story

Exorcist 3- actually quite creepy in places, I made the mistake of watching it late at night, idiosyncratic performance by George C Scott. I'd love to see the "lost" original version.

I've been sort of slacking lately, but I'll get it up and running towards the end of the month.
