Wow, so late to this party. This has failure written all over it.

Give me a 6 season series on HBO, Showtime or AMC. Divide all flashbacks and a chopped-up Wizard &Glass evenly throughout.

Universal Sets Release Dates for THE BOURNE LEGACY, OUIJA, THE DARK TOWER, and More

THE DARK TOWER: May 17, 2013

So I guess Opie & company are serious about this?

Do they really plan release dates this far in advance? Maybe this is just a vague target, but a lot can happen in two and a half years. How much has happened with the production of the Hobbit movie(s) in that time?

The only recent films I can think of that have planned out their release dates so far in advance are the Marvel films.
As far as I can remember they've been hitting their target dates.

‘The Dark Tower’: Ron Howard’s plans (and passion) for Stephen King epic
Wow. I believe. I just hope the network (or whoever NBC Universal gets to air this) lets it play out. I think it's going to be an impossible show to put on NBC. SyFy? Maybe. But I'll hope for HBO or some such pay station where the rules just don't apply - granted, AMC is showing us that there are fewer and fewer rules left to adhere to. Also love that Howard & Company are using the print books, the audio books (how I got into the DT series) and the new comics as well.

Oh, and no Viggo. I think he's great, but he's more of a Jonas than a Roland. Jon Hamm? I don't recall ever hearing that name.... interesting. This is going to be a fun and exciting thing to watch unfold as they get moving.

Ron Howard eyes the road ahead on 'Dark Tower' series - It's just Moriarty commenting on the LA Times article, but he's excited as well so it's a fun read.

I fear Ron Howard's gonna cast some typical big unfitting star for Roland. Viggo - such typical internet prat suggestions from people who haven't got a clue.

Might as well cast Tom Wanks, Ronny.

That's an easy fear, but that's a LOT of time for an A-lister to be devoting to a project.

No I was being sarcastic about Tom. Don't believe me and let it give you an idea if you're reading this, Ronny!

I'll just say that I have no idea who I can think of to play Roland right now. Which also means that I am NOT thinking of any stars, which I think is half way to casting this character correctly. I hope you read THAT and be influence by this post, Ronny.

One of Moriarty's friends gave Ron Howard credit as having the power to make such a vast film and TV project actually happen. to make the studies let him make this.

So let's not cast too many stones at this guy who, quite honestly, has surprised me in the past. The question we have to ask about Ronny in this case is... how much of a dark side does he have? Is it a REAL dark side? Will he go far enough with the Dark Tower's horror as he needs to?

ie. How upfront and in your face will he go with Susan's burning by Rhea the Witch? Which I thought was just too damn evil.

Doesn't matter who they cast. This will be watered-down PG-13 dog shit. We will not get Roland in the books. Roland who will gun down a woman being used as a human shield and then proceed to massacre an entire town of men, women and children. We will not get the guy who lets a young boy plummet to his death so he can continue his quest.

This is not a worthy adversary.

I hope you're wrong. I mean, that's the real test of it all, isn't it? I'd like to think that Howard & Company aren't going to half-ass this and water it down. I didn't get that indication from the interview with him linked earlier. I like the idea of Guy Pearce as Roland, but no Viggo.

Retardo - Selleck as Roland ONLY if they get the principle cast from Magnum PI to cameo throughout (Higgins as Flagg!).

You know... I think you are all trying to make Roland too old. I think he should look mid to late 40s, frozen in time. He is almost immortal in that he doesn't seem to age past the age he is currently.

Yes I did think about this a bit.

Though it is said in The Gunslinger that Roland ages about 20 years?
Also that his face is described as showing a lot of history and experience etched into his features, would you see it that way too?
So I think for a guy to have this haggered look, he would have to have a more detailed or older looking face than Viggo's.

Even though he did this in The Road, I still don't think it's enough for a guy that seems to be walking the planet for God knows how many years or decades as Roland. I just don't think Viggo has the 'history' in his features that Roland should have.

Roland's craggy, Viggo's too clean.

That's IT!!! Colin Powell IS the Gunslinger!

Surprised this hasn't been posted yet. There is just no news coming out that intrigues me in the slightest. I think Mr.Howard is realizing more and more by the day that this will most likely disappoint the fanbase. . .

Such as Viggo Mortensen.

Shows just how unimaginative Ron Howard is to actually GO with crappy fanboy suggestions who say Viggo's name simply as they can't think of probably no more than 5 star names.

I can see Howard being more and more wrong for this. I'd rather he just be the Tim Burton to Superman many years ago, and actually not make it after all this fuss.

I swear, if it weren't for Aragorn, we'd all be pumped to think of Viggo as Roland. If we only knew him from his 2 awesome Cronenberg flicks and The Road, we'd be all about it. But just because of Aragorn I know at least I can only think, "ehhh, I guess . . . . "

I just don't understand why it would be THAT hard to do right. I look at crazy, out-there flicks like 'Fight Club, 'The Fountain' or 'Children of Men' and think this could be knocked out of the park w/ the right people involved. I don't care if they still do a TV show. Just do what it takes, even if it takes multiple directors. 4 long films and a season or two of TV. DONE . . .

1) - The Gunslinger - Film1 / John Hillcoat
2) - 1 season of TV about Roland's youth - whoever
3) - The Drawing of the Three - Film2 / David Fincher
4) - The Wastelands - Film3 / Alfonso Cuaron
5) - 1 season of TV - Wizard & Glass
6) - Combine Important Parts of Books 6 & 7 - Film4 / Guillermo Del Toro

Then cut up both TV series into flashbacks and disperse into the films on DVD.

Sorry, no Wolves of the Calla, maybe later on as a flash-sideways / stand alone adventure.

From Cinemablend:

The Actor Playing Roland Deschain In The Dark Tower Will Be Revealed Within A Week

Eric Eisenberg wrote:There are thousands of things fans of The Dark Tower are dying to know about the upcoming series of films, but none are higher priority than the identity of the actor playing the series' main character, Roland Deschain. Since news of the adaptation was announced last April, names have been bandied around, from Viggo Mortensen to Javier Bardem. Well, apparently we'll get our answer this week.

MTV caught up with mega producer Brian Grazer at the Golden Globes on Sunday where he revealed that we'll learn the actor hired for Roland within a week. Because we've been burned before by promises like these, Grazer was pressed for the accuracy of his statement, and he responded, "Seriously. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Seriously." The script for the massive project is currently being written by Akiva Goldsman, and all parts of the franchise, including three films and two television series', will be directed by Ron Howard.

To be honest, I'd be surprised if the man playing Roland Deschain is an A-list name. This project is going to take an incredible commitment from everyone involved, particularly the lead actor, who will be playing Roland through multiple stages of the character's life. At the same time, the studio needs an actor that they can bank on in order to make sure that the high-budgeted concept actually works. Believe us when we say that once this casting is announced, we'll report it right away here on Cinema Blend.

Please no Viggo (50% meant, but a strong 50%).

I was thinking this last night, Viggo is just too nice. He hasn't the dark scary or intimidating presence that Roland has.

Please no Viggo (50% meant, but a strong 50%).

I was thinking this last night, Viggo is just too nice. He hasn't the dark scary or intimidating presence that Roland has.

you still haven't even finished reading the books, have you?

3/4s through the last one. Near the end. Don't blow it for me. But by now I do know what Roland looks like.

I was bout to write that I HATE it when you put black bars up that I can't read and do my head in, but then when I quoted this page I saw what you wrote.

Well if that is the case then this is who I want to play that wrestler part -

- and I wanna Extra role being Roland's opponent!

I just can't picture Javier Bardem as Roland, if it's between him and Viggo I'd pick Viggo.

Now it seems like it's actually going to happen though, I kinda think casting someone relatively unknown is the way to go. Roland should just be Roland and not hampered by all the baggage a recognised persona will bring to the role.
