Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides

Shooting to commence April 2010.

Based on the comments by Aviv in this report, I think they've taken on board how some people felt about the escalating storylines in the last two POTC films and are clearly ready to boil things down to the essentials - namely Jack, rum, and a damn good time.

Yo and, indeed, ho.

They should get HBC to play a she-captain, and let Tim Burton direct.*

The pirates theme reimagined by Danny Elfman would sound AWESOME!*

Well if Depp and Geoffrey Rush can actually get right inside their characters and really flesh them out properly and make it really about them, then we're nearly there for making a good film. In 2 and 3 Sparrow never seemed to come to the surface enough for me, I still feel we never really see him properly. 4 should give enough time to do justice to him.

Depp and Rush have no need to flesh out their characters as Verbinski just gets ILM to do it for them.

Lot of Pirates hate in here. I thought first one was great. Really surprising.

2nd one was okay. It had some really amazing sections, most notably anything to do with Bill Nighy, but it sort of started falling apart. Depp started making Sparrow a parody of what he was before.

Part three was pretty sloppy. Lots of messy stuff, and Sparrow keeps getting less interesting.

I don't know, I think most of us feel the same way about the series as you Nacho. The first one was pretty great in my opinion, but as the movies went on they got progressively more convoluted and bloated. It's weird because it always looked great, and I had few problems with any one scene that I could point to, but for some reason the whole was just worse than the sum of its parts.

I think part of the problem is that when you turn one movie into a franchise, the whole thing runs the risk of becoming a parody of itself. All of a sudden each subplot that was handled just delicately enough to be charming the first time around (the compass that doesn't point north, Jack Sparrow's strange similarity to Keith Richards) has its own backstory, and everything that seemed to work is repeated and multiplied -- supernatural imbroglios, bumbling pirate sidekicks, even that dog with the keys for god's sake -- so that no matter how faithfully you try to recreate the "formula" of the first one, you can never quite get back to what made it work. Like a parody, every element of the movie is already assumed.

Actually up for this. Get rid of the other characters that I didn't really care for, and have the 'further adventures' of my favourites who you can do rather interesting things with, and here we got a nice story and intruiging with the possible villains and other new faces. Hopefully it won't have that 'bloat' apparent in the previous movies that seemed like it was needed just to pad out the over-running time and this will just be a more straightforward thrilling ride. Let's just hope they explore Depp and Rush's characters like they really deserve. Saw Rush in The Life and Death of Peter Sellers again last night. Quite an astonishing performance. USE him and Depp in this properly!

Muppets did it first.

Actually, I quite like the idea of a mix of Steampunk tech, the old and new. It's not a new idea, been done for years by Final Fantasy.

I could stomach another adventure, I thought 1 and 2 were fab. The fight scenes in 2 where a pleasure to watch, no matter how long. If only some films could do action like that.

The whole fight scene trying to get Davy Jones Key was epic.

Let's have more of that, less of the convoluted story of part 3 and something nice and simple like 1.

Johnny Depp's gotta eat.

Which sequel will they finally introduce Depp's illegitimate son, destined to take over the reigns of his pirate daddy? Or how about his brainy brother, who's the King of England's accountant? Maybe a zany green martian sidekick?

Look at the Final Fantasy games to get an idea how Steam Punk works.
There is a whole Steam Punk anime genre. Check it out for further clues.
BioShock is a good example for Steam Punk too.

And of course the comic series "Steampunk!" would make a fine example. I don't know the exact definition, but to me steampunk means technology that is supposed to be old, but is either too sophisticated or fantastical to have actually existed. So yeah, basically Wild Wild West.

'The Wild West West' tv show from back in the mid '60's' is often cited as one of the earliest works of steam punk in pop culture (although much older stuff like Jules Verne, HG Wells and Mary Shelley's novels are what the whole genre is inspired by) - the movie version 'Wild, Wild West' Will Smith and Kevin Kline did have a few nice gadgets in it but didn't really have a handle on the mood or concept (plus that shitty hip-hop song that Smif sampled Stevie Wonder's 'I WIsh' and Kool Moe Dee for).

That film sucked because they totally blew the West/Gordon relationship and turned them into adversaries. I could have forgiven them anything else but screwing up that basic heart of the series ruined everything else. They were a fricking team, the brains and the brawn. In the stinking film they were rivals. Epic fail.

From Deadline Hollywood:

Nikki Finke wrote:And now Cook's ouster may imperil a 4th Pirates Of The Caribbean movie. Noting that Cook first enticed him with the Pirates movie idea and there's no firm deal in place for No. 4, Johnny Depp said in a phone interview from London with Claudia Eller: "There's a fissure, a crack in my enthusiasm at the moment," Depp said. "It was all born in that office."

Depp used words like "shocked... very sad" to describe his reaction when Cook called him a few hours ago to break the news. "He is the utmost gentleman, so he made the call himself. He said, 'I'd like you to hear it from me before you hear it from someone else or read it. He said today was my last day. He didn't give me a reason... I didn't see this coming. There was no reason to see this coming." Depp said "I consider Dick a friend inside an insane system. He's instantly trustworthy. And you generally don't meet people at the studios you trust," Depp said. "He's a rare beast."

From Sci Fi Wire:
Pirates 4, Prince of Persia, Sorcerer's Apprentice details!

Jerry Bruckheimer, producer of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, confirmed a June start for the fourth installment, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, and reaffirmed that Johnny Depp will definitely star, despite rumors last year to the contrary. Depp had suggested that his enthusiasm for the film had waned after Walt Disney Studios chair Dick Cook stepped down, but Bruckheimer has his star confirmed for the movie with director Rob Marshall.

"Yeah, everything's fine," Bruckheimer said in a group interview on Saturday in Pasadena, Calif., where he was promoting his new TV show Miami Medical. "We're moving forward. We hope to start in June, and Rob Marshall's set. We're moving forward."

That still leaves a few months to decide whether other Pirates regulars will return: Bruckheimer has not decided whether the previous trilogy's co-stars—Keira Knightley, Orlando Bloom and Geoffrey Rush—will be involved.

"No deals have been made yet, other than Johnny's," Bruckheimer continued. "We'll make those decisions later and let you know."

Inspired by the Tim Powers novel On Stranger Tides, the fourth Pirates movie will pick up where the last one, At World's End, left off. "I think it kind of takes off from the end of 3, where he's got that map to the fountain of youth," Bruckheimer said. "That's where the story starts. That was the inspiration."

World's End climaxed with a sword fight on top of a sinking ship in a whirlpool. Now it's up to Rob Marshall to top that. "Rob Marshall is an ex-choreographer, so I'm sure he'll find some really interesting things to play with," Bruckheimer said. "Hopefully there will always be signature sequences

Reports are that Depp (duh) and Rush are back. Bloom and Knightley will not be returning...which is fine with me and no shock to anyone. Even if you liked their characters (I didn't) their story has been told now.

I post this mostly because of the assertion that Geoffrey Rush will be back, because Barbossa is awesomesauce.
