The Social Network

In perhaps the weirdest bit of movie news I've heard in a while, Aaron Sorkin is writing a movie about Facebook:

ComingSoon wrote:Writer/producer Aaron Sorkin has announced on his newly-created Facebook page that he is going to be writing a movie about the popular social networking site.

"I've just agreed to write a movie for Sony and producer Scott Rudin about how Facebook was invented. I figured a good first step in my preparation would be finding out what Facebook is, so I've started this page. (Actually it was started by my researcher, Ian Reichbach, because my grandmother has more Internet savvy than I do and she's been dead for 33 years.)"

Mark Zuckenberg created the site in 2004 at Harvard during his sophomore year. It now has over 60 million members and is valued at $16 billion.

Sorkin wrote A Few Good Men, The American President, Malice, Charlie Wilson's War and The Trial of the Chicago 7, which is in pre-production according to him. He's also known for TV series "Sports Night," "Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip" and "The West Wing."

I repeat here again, what I say for months whenever this movie comes up:
It will probably a very good movie, because Sorkin can make great scripts out of boring topics (and I heard from many people that the script is fucking brillant!), but it will also be the biggest Box Office bomb of the year, because in the end it's just a film about Facebook and I don't know anybody who cares about this topic enough to watch a movie about it.

This isn't a movie about the facebook website. 400 million users (let be honest, how many of those 400 million are active users anyway?) aren't going to tune in to a movie just because they subscribe to the website. This is intended to be a drama about the man/boy who created this phenomenon. Its not going to be hours of him typing LOL status updates on his FB page. That's my take on it at least.

I dont know what movie your thinking of but this is a movie about the facebook website and the founders who created it. and I will be honest, there are at least 400 million active users on facebook and at least 200 million log on in any given day! Im not saying that all the people on facebook are going to see the social network, but I am saying that facebook is probably one of the social network's biggest target audience and if just a fraction of the users on facebook see the social network than it will be a financially successful film.

Are you saying that facebook users dont like dramas? are you saying that facebook users only want to see a movie about a guy typing status updates? because thats just dumb. I am a user on facebook and I really want to see this film and im willing to bet there's a couple million more just like me, no?

my post was a response to someone who said, "I don't know anybody who cares about this topic enough to watch a movie about it", which I believe is completely insane. Why would a studio greenlight this if they didnt think it would make any money? not to say that it cant bomb. Im just making the point that to think no one wants to see this is wrong. I think if anyone is interested in seeing this film, it would be the people who actually use facebook, and not because they want to see someone typing status updates.

What I was trying to say was that although its a movie about the creation of the website, its more than that. Its about two friends who start an empire and ultimately part ways blah blah blah. I liken it to the movie Wallstreet: that movie used the backdrop of the wallstreet culture to tell a tale about greed/redemption/values/family blah blah blah. So it transcended simply being a movie about the market. That's what I think this FB movie will attempt to do (albeit in a more humorous way apparently). So I don't think the target audience is FB users per se. That's what I was getting at.

Let's face it: While there are many smart Facebook users, most of them are teenies, who prefer Transformers over a mature Aaron Sorkin scripted drama.

I cant argue with that, but i think teenies will still want to see this. I have a feeling one of the ways the studio will market this film is through blasting attention to the fact that its a movie about facebook, which will cause a lot of teenies to want to see it. Im sure a decent amount of users on facebook are in college or around that age-18, very marketable. like i said, there are 400 million active users. that is shit ton.

well, i think your logic is a bit off here. just because somebody USES something doesn't mean they want to watch a movie about it. i mean, there are hundreds of millions of people who use toilet paper, but i don't think anyone's going to rush out to watch a movie about TP.

I dont think my logic is a bit off. Just because somebody uses something doesn't mean they want to watch a movie about it but it might make them more interested in it. If i used charmin ultra and I find out that they decided to make a movie about charmin ultra, rather than the other toilet paper companies, Im going to be interested as to why they chose to do so. I am also positive that charmin ultra would focus a portion of its marketing campaign towards charmin ultra users! they would be dumb not to. isnt this how movie studios think? who's going to be one of the target audiences for this film? that seems very obvious, facebook users! I never said that all facebook users will see this movie, in fact, i said something of the opposite. if a fraction, because there are so many freaking users, of facebook users see the movie than the social network will do a financially successful good job at the box office.

some people seem to argue just for argument's sake.

Dude, the movie is going to be complete shit. I read the script and there is no drama anywhere. It's boring, slow, and just a huge jackoff session of people behind this movie going 'LOOK! we totally made a movie about something so topical"

Just because people use something in their everyday lives doesn't mean a movie should be made from it.

"Hey Bob, you know what I've been thinking, everyone uses bread for sandwiches right? Well we should totally make a movie about it. Think about it man! Your sitting at home and then the trailer comes on, 'The last great invention of man kind......SLICED BREAD (in theaters this summer)' and everyone sitting on their asses will be like, wow man, I eat bread, I totally have to see it, because its in our everyday lives"

Fuck facebook, fuck Sorkin, and fuck anyone who supports it. There I said it, and if you disagree with me, go fucking poke me on your digital farm behind your goddamn computer.

DAN SAVAGE LIVES FOREVER!!!!!!!!!

I really cannot bring myself to go anywhere near this movie.

Considering the court action is nowhere near finished on Facebook, I don't get why they make a big deal out of it. It wasn't until about 12 month ago that he go sued...(I'm guessing a subpoena had to be supplied to check the code)....

The movie sucks and has no basis in any form of factual realism.

I do love Aaron Sorkin. Although, to be fair, I have seen each TV series he has ever written and the man loves to recycle jokes/scenarios/actors/just about everything.

But still, I really dig his work.

From Zuckerberg's Wikipedia page:

Wikipedia wrote:Harvard students Cameron Winklevoss, Tyler Winklevoss, and Nishita Narendra accused Zuckerberg of fraudulently letting them believe he would help them build a social network called HarvardConnection.com (later called ConnectU). They filed a lawsuit in 2004 but was dismissed without prejudice on March 28, 2007. It was refiled soon thereafter in U.S. District Court in Boston, and a preliminary hearing was scheduled for July 25, 2007. At the hearing the judge told ConnectU parts of their complaint were not sufficiently pled and gave them the ability to refile an amended complaint. On June 25, 2008, the case was settled and Facebook agreed to pay a $65 million settlement. As part of the lawsuit, in November 2007, confidential court documents were posted on the website of Harvard alumni magazine 02138. They included Zuckerberg's social security number, his parents' home address and his girlfriend's address. Facebook filed to get the documents taken down, but the judge ruled in favor of 02138

Or were you referring to this court action?

Wikipedia also wrote:The Deputy Attorney General of the Islamic republic of Pakistan has asked the country's police to issue an arrest warrant through Interpol to have Zuckerberg arrested in 2010 for Blasphemy after a "Draw Muhammad" contest on Facebook was started, which led to Pakistan blocking facebook nationwide. The Muslim demands for arrest extended to Dustin Moskovitz and Chris Hughes, the co-founders of Facebook. The Deputy Attorney General said that he's waiting for the police to contact Interpol about making arrangements for the arrest of Facebook's owners. The Pakistan government has asked its representative to raise the issue with the United Nations General Assembly. No formal charges have been filed against Zuckerberg.
