Minor awards of the year.

Big Pimpin': Burt Lancaster in The Leopard (Il Gattopardo).

Image

I think he's pleased. Fuck off, Alain Delon. You kicked ass in Le Samouraï , but you aren't a true pimp master like Burty.

Best Nekkidness: Mulholland Dr. Honourable mention to Martha Marcy Mae Mammaries Marlene.

Film I Most Want Nutjob Conservatives to Watch: The Mosquito Coast. My hope is that anyone who complains about big government handouts and preaches to everyone about boot-strap living will be inspired to go whole hog self-sufficient, and move to Central America to start ice factories.

Oddest Casting Against Type: George Sanders in The Black Swan (1942). You probably know him from films like All About Eve, Hitchcock's Rebecca, The Ghost and Mrs. Muir, or maybe just as the voice of Shere Khan in Disney's animated The Jungle Book, but no matter what you've seen him in he was probably the suavest, most debonair character in the film. So it comes as something of a joyful shock to see him as an unkempt, ginger pirate. Frankly, he and the rest of the supporting cast is the only reason to watch this flick.

Most Unfairly Ignored Due to Jessica Biel: Easy Virtue(2008). Any fan of period films shouldn't let Ms. Biel scare them away from this. She's decent at the least and besides,it's based on a Noel Coward play and co-stars Colin Firth and Kristin Scott Thomas.

Best Writing By A Dead Guy: Oscar Wilde for The Importance of Being Ernest and The Picture of Dorian Gray.

Best Way to Kick Yourself in the Balls: Black Rain (Kuroi ame). No, not the Michael Douglas one. This is about Hiroshima so ...yeah.

Most Badass Heroine: Constance Talmadge as The Mountain Girl in Intolerance: Love's Struggle Throughout the Ages. Her brother tries to pawn her off at the marriage market, but she's having none of it and threatens to scratch the eyes out of anyone who touches her skirt. Later she swipes his old armor and joins the Babylonian defenders. And she can drive a chariot.

I don't know if I'd call it either one the best movie, or my favorite movie, but the movies I find myself revisiting the most often are MIDNIGHT IN PARIS and TREE OF LIFE...two masters doing what they do best

Probably my top two movies this year are TREE OF LIFE and WARRIOR. The latter especially has got my heart by the balls.

Gave my journal a final workover.

Favourite movie: How to Train Your Dragon. Simply did cast a spell on me, absolutely magical.

Favourite 2011 release: Either Hanna or Suckerpunch, I can't make up my mind

Worst: The Spirit. so awful they can't be serious, so unfunny they can't be kidding. I know some people found humour in Samuel Jackson spouting random nonsense about eggs. I did not. NOT. ONE. BIT. [/joker]

Though not technically the worst two special hate awards go to:

Biggest betrayal of the source material by an adaptation: Shamo. Goes far beyond necessary changes or different takes to fucking up of epic proportions. What would have been just nerdrage in other cases indeed turns into righteous fury.

Biggest insult to the audience: There will be Blood. Cause at some point for me, lack of communication turns into a big fuck you.

Other special mentions

Most predictive: Restrisiko. German TV movie about a nuclear accident, aired two months before Fukushima happend.

Best advertisement: The Book of Eli. Left me with an overwhelming desire to play a Fallout game.

Rumor is the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo ( American version) is already a box office failure.
Seriously?

Fo realz. It had a budget of about $90 million, and as of the Xmas weekend had only grossed $21.4 million.

Okay, 182 movies in 2011. Still far away from my goal of at least 365, but much better than 2010. I still have to catch up with some of the new releases (I probably will this week), but so far my top 3 are:

1.) Super
2.) Tucker & Dale Vs Evil
3.) Winnie The Pooh

That's it.

Oh I forgott to mention

Weirdest movie: Tideland. For most of the year I was sure nothing would surpass the trash-nonsense of the Helge Schneider movies I saw in January. Leave that to Terry Gilliam. If a sandworm from Dune would have shown up at the end of the film and swallowed the whole cast it wouldn't have surprised me anymore.

I only got 116... there is no way I could ever do 365. Nice goal though.

I almost got to 20 this year! But that was double my goal, so I succeeded!

Unfortunately only 2 of those movies were in an actual theater

2012 will be the Year of the Movies for me for sure...too many good flicks coming out this year to ignore.

That movie cost 90 million to make? WTF? Was Craig expensive or is it the cost of paying the crew in socialist Sweden?

I mean, DRIVE cost less than 20 mill to make and looked just as slick and professional and had just as many recognizeable actors. I'd have drawn henna tattoos on Rooney Mara's ass for free if they'd called me.

Yeesh.

Good movie though.
