Doctor Strange (Now w/ 33.3% More Inception)

Postby Lord Voldemoo on Tue Jun 03, 2014 7:41 pm

Doctor Strange has a director: Scott Derrickson. His credits are almost exclusively in horror (the Exorcism of Emily Rose, Sinister), which is interesting...maybe a darker tone/look than the rest of the MCU? I'd be fine with that, frankly. I haven't seen Sinister. I remember Emily Rose being equal parts horror and courtroom drama, and I remember thinking it was ok, but I don't think I've seen it since it came out.

I wonder if they are fast-tracking this and pushing the pause button on Ant-Man? Or just trying to get some news out there that isn't about Ant-Man...

THR:

Tatiana Siegel & Borys Kit wrote:Derrickson wrote and directed the upcoming Screen Gems thriller Deliver Us From Evil, starring Eric Bana, Edgar Ramirez and Olivia Munn, which opens July 2.
Derrickson also has worked in the arena of big-budget films, having directed The Day the Earth Stood Still remake for 20th Century Fox.

I've never seen any of his movies. Just the bad reviews for The Day the Earth Stood Still.

Bad Ass Digest:
Marvel Studio's honcho tells us how the grounded Marvel Cinematic Universe will expand to include a Sorceror Supreme.
“Doctor Strange needs to be a Ditko/Kubrick/Miyazaki/The Matrix mind-trip,” he said.

So this will be Marvels first supernatural movie.
If its done right it could be like Big Trouble in Little China.

So Kubrick + Ditko = The Day The Earth Stood Stoopid?

I can almost see it, if you squint and stand funny.

There were more interesting choices on the initial shortlist of directors, almost all of whom I would have preferred to this guy. But you can't say that Hellraiser, The Exorcism of Emily Rose and Sinister don't have atmosphere, whatever their other faults may be.

The one thing that I'm curious about is that Derrickson is a graduate of Biola University, and largely makes palatable Christian-themed stories within the Hollywood system (including Gort and Space Jesus Save Humanity). I'm not sure how Doctor Strange figures into that, considering he's a master of some made-up voodoo.

I've never read a Dr. Strange comic, but I read the wikipedia page on this guy and this could be a movie I might enjoy. I recently revisited THE SHADOW, and although that movie had some problems, I think I would enjoy DR. STRANGE if it's sorta like that but with a few crazy monster characters thrown in. Ya know, a good sense of adventure with mysticism with some fun humour.

As for who to play Dr. Strange, my vote is for Pierce Brosnan.

I'm fully aware that this will never happen, but my dream casting (assuming they were skewing younger) would be Ben Whishaw (I'm Not There, Perfume, Cloud Atlas, Skyfall):

None of this jives with the way I see Phoenix playing his career and how seriously he takes his craft. He is said to be a crazy method actor who gets completely into a character for the run of a project, then when it's over he has some minor meltdown and leaves it behind.

So I just don't see him signing up for some multi-picture deal that will involve all sorts of cameos in other movies and various Comic Con public apearances.

It seems that most actors these days do have to do a more commercial project every now and then so that their smaller projects can get financing. But Phoenix will probably just do another mainstream epic thing like GLADIATOR again or a one-off sci-fi thing like INCEPTION instead of some superhero flick.

Marvel's DOCTOR STRANGE May Already Have A Composer
Here's some interesting Sorcerer Supreme related info nobody seems to have picked up from SDDCC. At the “Behind the Music: Crime, Death and Resurrection” panel, Scott Derrickson's Deliver Us From Evil composer Christopher Young sounded fairly confident that he'll land the gig

Benedict Cumberbatch ‘Strange Doctor’ Deal Closes At Marvel

Mike Fleming Jr wrote:UPDATE:
The Imitation Game star Benedict Cumberbatch has finalized his deal to play Doctor Strange, giving Marvel’s Kevin Feige the distinction of having another world class actor to play in his superhero sandbox. Deadline revealed back in late October that Marvel had set its sights on the British actor who has become an awards season front runner for his The Imitation Game performance as Alan Turing, the genius who cracked the Nazi’s unbreakable Enigma Code, shortening WWII by two years. He was tragically prosecuted for being homosexual and chemically castrated, in one of the great injustices of the 20th Century.

EARLIER EXCLUSIVE, Oct. 27, 11:26 am: Marvel has finally found its Doctor Strange. I’m hearing Benedict Cumberbatch is the studio’s choice for the superhero pic, and negotiations are about to begin. The news comes after talks with Joaquin Phoenix around the time of Comic-Con went south, and Marvel went back to the drawing board. With names like Jared Leto and Tom Hardy also in the mix, this is obviously a coveted role. I expect this deal to make.

Steve Ditko & Doctor Strange

Steve Ditko and The Start of Something Strange
Matthew David Surridge wrote:One of my favourite Marvel Comics characters, certainly my favourite of all their big names, is Doctor Strange. Like most established Marvel characters, he’s been handled a lot of different ways over the course of time. I’d like to look back, and look closely, at one of the early tales that defined him most clearly — specifically, his origin story.

i think that twitter gif of him jumping up and down made for a more compelling trailer. at least you get to see him in uniform.
i kinda like the idea of dr. strange in theory, but i always thought of him as more of an aleister crowley-type figure, not an eastern mystic (though there were eastern influences on crowley, but not just that). this movie looks like something that won't really get very interesting until the last 20 minutes or so.

I worked on this film and it was boring. At least Rachel McAdams gave me a dirty look when she caught me looking at her.

This trailer looks like it's holding back on the trippy psychedelic imagery that I read about this film having. So far it's too Inceptiony.

looks fun, shots that could double for comic frames, Cumberbatch looks to be a good fit, mystical world established, probably an Infinity Stone in there somewhere, it is a different kind of comic movie, which I think will only expand the possible audience who will be interested in checking it out since the usual comic movie crowd will go along with those who might not be into more typical "superheroes" movies but are into magic/mysticism as a genre and will go for that aspect. I think this could be a solid hit for Marvel........and remember, I was right about Guardians being THE movie of the year six months before it came out  :D
