finally watched "The Revenant" last night and it was every bit as good as i had hoped. Leo killed it, cinematography was spectacular, and the direction was powerful.

I didn't do such a great job last year for keeping my journal updated. Let's see how 2017 pans out.

January

The Accountant - decent flick.
Deepwater Horizon - lame
The Girl on the Train - book was better but that isn't saying much. Underwhelming film.
The Light Between Oceans - solid film, great adaptation from book. Fassbender and Vikander are superb in this.
Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children - this is typical Tim Burton trademark style. Enjoyable film with creepy monsters, cool special effects...and SLJ.
Hacksaw Ridge - I really thought this was a fantastic film. Such an inspiring story. Mel done good.
La La blah blah Land - I honestly don't get all the fuss about this film. It's a whimsical tale, fun to watch Gosling and Stone dance but that's about it. Gosling's singing, meh.
Manchester by the Sea - Amazing film. Affleck is just amazing in this.

February

The Love Witch - WoW! This is quite the spectacle of the movie. Technicolor, 60s vibe, camp. I liked it quite a bit.
Lion - Loved this film. The music, the story, Dev Patel, Nicole Kidman and that little boy, Sunny Pawar....amazing performances. Just a fantastic film. My favourite so far that I've seen in 2017. I didn't cry but wanted to.
Arrival - Amy Adams is really the star of this film and the main reason why this film is so engaging. This film pulled at all the right heart strings.
The Edge of Seventeen - A fun coming of age story. Not bad, not good. Forgettable.
Split -Dissociative identity disorder has never been this fun to watch. McAvoy is extremely good in this. The teenage girls are a bit campy but perhaps that's the point. Solid film from M. Knight.
Nocturnal Animals - This film definitely screams Tom Ford. Stylish, seductive and full of substance. I think that is the best way to sum up Ford's films. A Single Man had all of those qualities too. Not sure which one I prefer. Both quite good.

I read that M. Knight didn't allow that ending in the test screenings because he didn't want the rumours to get out about a potential Unbreakable 2 in the works.

it was buried somewhere on the second page of the news section

http://zone.aintitcool.com/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=76467&p=850051#p850051

After the last post in that thread I finally caught up with the first part and watched several more trailers, wouldn't be suprised if the movie left me undwhelmed as did the first one.

watched "Okja" on Netflix. it was alright, not quite as good as Snowpiercer, or maybe it was a little better, I go back and forth on that, and neither are in the same league as The Host. one thing I noticed in the movie "Okja" was a real revelation, though.....someone who is or was once a Zoner had a hand in writing the screenplay. yes, you read that right, and I am pretty much 100% on this. the movie was just released last week so I don't want to discuss it right now, I want others to watch it and see if they pick up on the oh-so-obvious evidence that a Zoner was part of the creation of the movie. :D

Jon... Ronson? Are you talking about the guy's name? Or does it have something to do with the content of the film?

I plan on watching Okja soon-ish either way.

content. there is a name of an organization in the movie that I am positive comes from right here in the Zone. a word filter.

speaking of word filters, how prescient is it that the zone used Dumbledore for g@y years before it was revealed that he really IS teh Dumbledore

one thing I forgot to make explicit about the movie, it is definitely a message movie, even moresoe than Snowpiercer, and like Snowpiercer the analogy approach when the message is so clear can be clunky and heavy-handed at times with the narrative. I honestly think the rating on RT is just evidence that the vast majority of the reviewers are vegetarian. :-P

I think I prefer non GMO pigs, like Miss Piggy and Babe - well, I think they are non GMO

I enjoyed this movie, it has a message to get across and at times it's a very heavy-handed one. It's funny, it's harsh, it's over the top - the film has it all.

Gyllenhaal is being weird yet again, not sure if it worked for me this time.

his performance was bad. it wasn't cheesy or scenery-chewing, it was just bad. it was easily my least favorite part of the movie and it really hurt the movie overall as his character was among main cast.

Best movie I saw released in 2017: Bladerunner 2049(fuck you, Ridley Scott, Harrison Ford is NOT a robot)

Funniest movie I saw released in 2017: Thor:Ragnorok (fuck you, Ridley Scott, you had nothing to do with this movie and it was AWESOME!)

Movie that most outperformed expectations I saw released in 2017: Baby Driver (I still like this movie tons even though Kevin Spacey is in it, but since he gets killed in grotesquely graphic fashion I believe that makes it ok. :D so fuck you, Ridley Scott)

Worst piece of shit movie I saw released in 2017: Alien Covenant(fuck you, Ridley Scott, just.....fuck you      )

Most ballsy franchise movie I saw released in 2017: John Wick 2 (fuck you, Ridley Scott, you would have just made a sequel that rendered the previous instalment a moot point)

Best simian allegory for the story of Moses I saw released in 2017: War for Planet of the Apes(fuck you, Ridley Scott, you damn dirty ape)

Best movie I did not see released in 2017: The Shape of Water(really, I know it is, I can tell just by trailers, I :D , much better than that steaming pile of shit, Alien Covenant, so fuck you, Ridley Scott)
