When recording "Rumble," he created the fuzz tone by punching holes in his amplifiers to produce a dark, grumbling sound. It took off instantly, but it was banned by some deejays in big cities for seeming to suggest teen violence.
"I was looking for something that Chet Atkins wasn't doing, that all the jazz kings wasn't doing, that all the country pickers wasn't doing. I was looking for my own sound," Wray told The Associated Press in 2002.

another cool thing about Wray is that most (if not all)
of his music was pure instrumental aggro (for the time)
psychebilly rock surf proto-punk noise fun. he dispensed
with the vocals altogether which more bands should do,
IMHO.

most vocalists in rock / punk bands are beyond terrible.
and i'm sick of whiners. better to focus on the noise
and toss out the vocals altogether. words just get in the
way. Wray understood this...

he used to play with Southern Culture on the Skids all the time. i never got to see him, but i know he was a tremendous influence on a ton af bands/musicians. in addition to being one of the coolest motherfuckers to ever strap on a six string. there arent emough trailblazers like him in the world. rest in peace, you old b@stard.

holy shit i just found out he was dead !
if im right , he's the one who slashed the speaker to get a better sound (before the animals &/or whoever else done it) , this guy is the reason i have an overdrive pedal & not distortion .
