My favourite album of 2009 already! Unless the new Manics album turns out to be incredible, Antony and The Johnsons will likely remain top for me. Such a beautiful record and endlessly listenable.

I saw him play this last Saturday. It had some kind of swampy country arrangement, and I'm pretty sure Bobby compressed whole epic verses into 5 seconds just so he wouldn't have to sing as much (well, sing's the wrong word... After seeing him in person, I can honestly say he can't sing anymore; although there are people who might say he never could. Which I thoroughly disagree with). That being said, I've still kind of got the shivers, over a week later!

EDIT: And he didn't pick up the guitar once. His instruments of choice were the harmonica and the organ, which he was pretty fucking nifty on.

I'm currently totally addicted to a group named Big Blood from Portland, Maine. They're another one of those free folk collectives, but possibly the best of their kind. Imagine a bunch of outcasts who grew up listening to nothing but The Beatles' Wild Honey Pie and The American Anthology of Folk Music, and you'll get a pretty good idea of what they sound like. I can't think of another modern group right now who sound so damned life-affirming, and without souring the effect with post-this and post-that.

All of their albums are available online gratis [and legally] courtesy of internetarchive.org (I'd start with Live at the Space Gallery). Unfortunately, like a lot of great groups, they suffer from being overly-prolific. In 2007 alone they released 5 albums, four of which are totally flawless. Also, to further complicate matters, they refer to most of their albums as being live, though they're really studio-reworkings of live setlists.

Here are a couple of Youtube links:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RwFbbviU2PE.

And a cover of Can's Vitamin C, which actually made me listen to the original in a whole different light.

RED the new album by Datarock. Comprised purely of instruments available before 1983. Why? I dunno. But its a pretty good album, and thats what counts. So far its not grabbing me like DATAROCK their first album, but its growing on me with each listen, after an indifferent first go.
And for any John Hughes fans, there is a song about Molly Ringwald on there (So i suppose any Molly fans will like it too).
...and so forth.

Comfortably Numb - as performed by The Bad Plus

When I first heard there was a "jazz" version of Comfortably Numb out there, I thought BLASPHEMY!!! But now it's one of my favorites. The instrumentation in the second verse just sums up the chaos implied in the lyrics... percussion falls out of time, the piano begins to riff away from the meter...

Love this thing.

I've never heard of The Bad Plus.... just checked them out on LAstFM... VERY COOL!!! They're now on my must-buy list. When that piano starts going off..... holy shit!! It was so awesome I almost felt ill!

Speaking of "Comfortably Numb" I'm now listening to the only Pink Floyd concert I was able to see 7-15-94 at the Pontiac Silverdome. It was the first time they had played the entire Dark Side album since 1975.
I had a torrent download (from a live music trading site) open and looking for a seed for over a year and tonight out of nowhere the seed finally came.

Glad you dug it. For more "interesting" Bad Plus... check out their version of "Smells Like Teen Spirit"! It starts off conventionally enough, but eventually heads out to da-da-ville (and that's a good thing).

Now listening to the new Madness disc "The Liberty of Nelson Folgate". Hell, I didn't even know they were still a functioning band. But you know what? I'm actually digging it.

I'm digging it in an early-eighties "House of Fun" kind of way, but still digging it.

I hear ya, especially when Lanegan is singing. I saw them on the tour with Dave Grohl and Lanegan would appear out of nowhere every so often to sing and it was a most high exalted sound. I am convinced that if God had a band that is what it would sound like.
