You can really tell how Prince Paul, etc... were really influenced by Steinski. Awesome hip-hop history lesson from this album.

how does the 2nd disc hold up, the mega-mix from 2002? That's a lot of tracks to dl off emusic - it'll pretty much take up all of my dl's for the month.
I wouldn't necessarily say Paul was influenced too much by Steinski - by '83, Stetsasonic had already been around for a couple of years. More of a contemporary than anything else - not to say he didn't re-appropriate DD and Steinski on De La's debut, but that his influences are far greater than one cat.

Shadow, Cut Chemist, Coldcut - now they all suck at Steinski's proverbial teat. Aside from the post-modern mish-mashup brilliance, what really impresses about Steinski is the messages cloaked in the body moving beats.

Either way, that first disc is a great hip-hop history lesson that still, surprisingly, holds up today - either the best reissue of the year, or one of the standout albums of the year, depending on how one categorizes it.

Very true about Prince Paul. I was mostly referring to his De La Soul stuff as you guessed.

The 2nd disc holds up really well I think. Again as the beginnings of modern mashup mix-tapey goodness. That and it's still fun to listen to today.

Holy wow, I just got my hands on Hail To The Thief on vinyl, now this was always my least favourite RH album - by quite a wide margin. But oh boy, hearing this on vinyl is like hearing a whole new album. I've got all their other albums on vinyl and while the quality is undoubtedly better there isn't anywhere near as much extra detail as there is on the HTTF vinyl compared to the CD. Every song is richer, underlying melodies which I swear just aren't picked up on the CD make the songs far more interesting and emotional. It really is pretty remarkable.

The early 'leak' of this was rawer and sounded bigger than the eventual mastered cd too, so as a vinyl fan, I'm not surprised, but even more determined to track down a copy of my own.

I think it's pretty cool too, b_r. You should check out the Pineapple Express thread, I think some of the audiophiles were talking about different remixes of the song (since it was in the preview).

I found myself caught in a musical time loop the other night - the track was 'Time' from DSOTM and I kept listening to it from time index 3:45 until 4:10, just over and over again! That guitar solo!! Just such a great piece of music, in my opinion.
