This isn't meant to be a diss on the song, because I liked it a lot, but the one thing that always strikes me as odd whenever I hear J-pop or J-hop songs (keep in mind that the extent of my experience with Japanese music is like a snowflake on the tip of an iceberg) is how clutches of English words or phrases are just randomly thrown in there. I guess mostly because I'm not sure I really understand why.

sometimes, i think its because there is no equivalent japanese word or phrase for what they are saying. but a lot of times, they just use english words to be "cool" or because they think they sound cool.

Anything short of that, and we're pretty much sound!

That's completely understandable.

In fact, now that you've done the good deed of putting said song in my head as well, I may join you.

*Midlake - Branches*

Haven't been listening to it long, but I'm really digging the feel of the album so far, and it may well be one of my favourites of the year. If things continue to go well, I may even ask it to go steady.

:o

Anyhow, I could try and clump a sentence together full of crudely employed adverbs and adjectives to try and describe it to you, but why bother when I could just go sharesies...

Metronomic Underground / John Cage Bubblegum (Peel Session)

(a)sexual French funk. Brilliant bass-line, that mid 90's Pavement, Radiohead guitar throb, crazy effects and it just builds and builds and builds into a swirly smorgasbord of sound.

The comedown is averted with the anthemic capper, which lives upto its name, and then some.

12min.22secs. of bliss...

In all my naivete, I hadn't even considered ever hearing this live, let alone that it existed, or that it could be done so well, even in comparrison to the record. I guess with the nature of this kinda music, it's easy to overlook the idea that there's room for performance and spontaneaty from the artists.

Sigh. Like it needs to be said, but God Bless John Peel.

Savane, Ali Farka Toure.

African desert blues.

Mixing his instantly identifiable electric guitar sound with a band that includes bamboo flute, ngoni (a four-stringed lute), traditional percussion instruments and a one-stringed violin called an njarka (all of which Touré himself played well), he conjures an elemental thrum on Savane as organic as the soil of his farm. Harmonica and saxophone make cameos, and Touré’s raw, powerful voice is answered by understated chants and choral vocals.

He does his own beats, no? Reminds me, somewhat, of Buck 65, in terms of the various song structures, some far removed from hip-hop. Not near Buck in terms of wordplay, flow and content, but he's young, and hopefully he'll grow up some.

What I didn't expect was to be absolutely floored.

I was disappointed with the album overall, but coming off the hip-opera masterwork that was A Prince Among Thieves, that was to be expected.

but "Chubb Rock Can You Please Pay Paul The $2200 You Owe Him"?

OMG. Man cribbed his own beat sick off-kilter beat ("Peas Porridge in the Pot") of yore, and MF Doom spit some of the best verse of his illustrious career.

I'll second, but nothing on Fishscale can hang with "Winter Warz".

Still, Fishscale is the best rap album I've heard so far this year...

"If The Kid Can't Make You Come" by The Time.

It features this classic exchange:

"Oh Lawd! Honey don't you ever try to breast-feed no baby."
"Why not?"
"Nevermind."

I loves me some '80s Prince-produced funk.

Searching for Soul.

Oliver Wang runs the single greatest soul, funk, r&b blog on the whole intraweb. I've blathered about him before; it's your loss if you don't check out Soul Sides at least once a week. I'm not fucking around with that statement, I don't mean to come off condescending, to come off like I'm holier than thou'. It's a simple statement of fact...if you feel music, take the 10minutes from whatever it is you do, and bookmark those 10minutes to just once a week checking out his blog.

Now, maybe it was his recent move, where he was forced to consolidate and dig thru his extensive crates, maybe he's just feeling generous lately, but this last week alone he's posted a bevvy of just stupendous tracks.

Here are some examples of his great taste and bottomless depth of his musical knowledge....

I Thank the Lord

Heaven on Their Minds

Soul Condor

Sweet Songs

but nothing, and I mean nothing, he's ever posted absolutely blew me right off my fucking chair the way...
Personally, I'm an atheist in the voting booth and a theist in the movie theatre. I separate the morality of religion with the spirituality and solace of it. There is something boring about atheism.
