Depeche Mode: Playing the Angel

I'm a huge Depeche Mode fan, but their new album kinda sucks, IMO. I think it sounds like a parody of a new wave band, rather than Depeche Mode. I know that ever since bandmate Alan Wilder left the band, DM has stuggled to keep afloat. I thought Ultra had good singles and felt that Exciter was an officially "good" album (kudos to producer Mark Bell) However under the "direction" of producer Ben Hillier, DM now sounds like a cheesy synth band. Notice the cheesy bleeps and blops on these tracks here.. Songwriting is weak too. Normally, I wouldn't give a shit because every band has a bad album once in a while. However, the band (even the press) are saying that this album is a return to the days of Violator or Songs of Faith and Devotion. I think I'm living in The Twilght Zone. If anything, it sounds more like their cheesy days of Speak and Spell. Judge for yourselves...

Playing the Angel

Speak and spell

Songs of Faith and Devotion

If they continue down this road, I can't support them any more. What do you think?

From someone who thought Speak and Spell was the second coming when it first came out (granted I was like 11), I have to agree about the new album's suckage, but I don't think the comparison to Speak and Spell (a synth masterpiece for its time, on par with Kraftwerk) is apt. I've only heard the new one a couple of times, and Precious has an Enjoy the Silencey thing about it, but nothing else struck me.

To me, DM are still a nostalgia act and hardly relevant anymore. Haven't seen them live since the 80s. Having said that, I felt that a few tracks on Ultra and Exciter were downright soulful and displayed what Martin and Dave do best (does anyone know what Andy actually does, besides press a button every now and then?). But yeah, nothing like that here.

I'm surprised they're still popular, but they should be aging a bit more gracefully. At this point, I would hope they'd do more piano and guitar combos. Remember Death's Door from the Until the End of the World Soundtrack?
