Battle Songs!!!

Postby Seppuku on Mon May 01, 2006 7:10 am

Now that I've gone and hung up my flick-knife for good, I guess I don't need these songs anymore, but it's always good to get the blood flowing. I want to know what music brings out that fire in your gut and that mad gleam in your eyes. You know like in The Outsiders when Swayze & Co are all preparing themselves for that big ruckus, you just know that Ralph Macchio's character wouldn't have gotten injured if he'd prepped himself for war with some good old fashioned fighting tunes.

These tracks don't have to be songs that play at 1000bpm, it can be something personal to you, or it could be some movie soundtrack- whatever gets ya in a fightin' mood.

My selections are:

The Stooges - Search and Destroy
Wu-Tang Clan - Wu-Tang Clan Ain't Nothin' to Fuck Wit'
The Clash - White Riot
Public Enemy - Rebel Without a Pause
Patti Smith - Rock n Roll Negrah
The Yardbirds - Train Kept A-Rollin'
The Spice Girls - 2 Become 1 (that song always makes me want to go out and lop a couple heads off).

Ensiferum - Into Battle. A good offering from this folk metal band that really gets you fired up and raring to go. Includes the line "Into battle we ride, with Gods by our side, we are strong, and not afraid to die".
The Black Mages - Those Who Fight Further. This is basically the Final Fantasy 7 Boss Battle theme redone by Nobuo Uematsus Rock band. These guys are just awesome, and really take the whole Video Game Music to a different level.
Blind Guardian - And Then There Was Silence. And Epic tune, 14 minutes long, and just awesome from these German Metal Rockers. Although starting slow, when it gets into the middle, it definatly picks up and gets you in the mood to go and do some battling!

The Blind Guardian track I've heard and I can confirm that's a real experience........ The other two interest me a lot though as well, Folk-Metal's something I've always been meaning to explore but never gotten around to  embarrassing really. And I guess now it's been almost a decade since I last played FFVII, I can finally take hearing that bloody battle music again. Although if you told me about this song a couple years ago I would have strangled you for even bringing it up...I mean how long did the game take you to complete? A long time. And what percentage of that was spent in fights that you just couldn't be asked to get into? A lot.

If you want to get into Fok-Metal then you cannot go wrong with Ensiferium. I would suggest getting the album Iron, that is the album in which this song is from. Although I do not know if Into Battle is it's correct name, that's what I call it, it's track 8 on the copy I got, because unfortunatly I cannot seem to find this album in shops in Scotland.

Get Battle Music by the Black Mages and you will be astounded at how awesomly amazing it is. Then go out and by Skies Above and be astounded at how awesomly amazing it is. Uematsu usually supports his concerts with The Black Mages, and it is a band that I would consider going to Japan just to see. Rumour has it, a search of Blue Laguna may help you there.

As for Blind Guardian, the song comes from the ablum A Night At The Opera, and is just truely awesome, each song is as good as the last one. I believe it is done with some sort of Orchestra, and did you know that the lead singer of BG is a classically trained Opera Singer? I also have another of their albums where they cover Barbara Ann, which is bizzarre to say the least.

And while we are on the matter, just thought of another one;

Nightwish - I Wish I Had An Angel. Ok, so they are now defunct, but they are still amazing, well at least this song is. Gets you right in the mood!

hmmm...not sure - i do know that when it was first released - "Break Stuff" by Limp Bizkit was all but B4NN3D at socials and bars up here due to the fact that all the jock deutschbags would get all "revved" up by it and try to break stuff... usually some other poor saps nose who was busy fooling with their girl when they were too busy high-fiveing and ass-slapping each other during their quest to break stuff...

Black Flag, "My War". Paranoid, furious, inspiring.
The whole world's wild at heart and weird on top.

This is a snakeskin jacket. And for me it's a symbol of my individuality, and my belief... in personal freedom.

"People Who Died," Jim Carroll Band. This song makes me want to do whatever needs doing. WHATEVER needs doing.

I'm not really a fighter, in fact once or twice in my life since school have I been involved in one.

That's not to say there's not songs that energise me for battles, just not necessarily physical ones.

For bar room brawling in the UK it's hard to beat "bring it on down" by Oasis, off their only good album, Definitely Maybe.
For general hooliganism you have to go with Firestsrter by the Prodigy.
Demon Clenaer by Kyuss is one of those songs that steels you for whatever problems are coming your way.
Elitism is positing that your taste is equivalent to quality, you hate "Hamlet" does it make it "bad"? If you think so, you're one elite motherfucker.

Personally, I'm an atheist in the voting booth and a theist in the movie theatre. I separate the morality of religion with the spirituality and solace of it. There is something boring about atheism.

Thirty years on, "Fortunate Son" sounds downright prescient. It should have been the Dem's battle march against Dubya.

Now that I think about G&R, "You Could Be Mine" makes me want to drive at better than 150 KPH.

A few more contenders I shouldn't have missed:

Led Zeppelin - Immigration Song...I've got no idea what on Earth Planty's rabbiting on about, but it works for me.
The Rolling Stones - Street Fighting Man ("Hey! said my name is called disturbance/I’ll shout and scream, I’ll kill the king, I’ll rail at all his servants")
Hawkwind - Motorhead: The song which gave birth to Lemmy, and got him sacked from the band because: "I dunno, it's a bit fast man in't it".

It's O.K. The only thing memorable about Dio-era Sabbath WAS "The Mob Rules". That, and the Douche I knew in high school that alternated between his Dio t-shirt and his Dokken t-shirt every damn day. Sweet Jesus that kid reeked.

The main theme from "Last of the Mohicans" and the Rohan theme from LOTR. Oh, and whatever that theme is whenever Gandalf is riding down the hill with the Rohirrim at Helm's Deep-- yeah, that kicks ass.

And if I didn't say that quite a few of the Rocky songs (Eye of the Tiger, FInal Countdown) and pretty much anything by Metallica get me pumped, I'd be lying.
