SONIC THREAD: The Official SONIC YOUTH Thread

With the release of the A++, 4 star, Outre'standing new disc Rather
Ripped
from your fave art- rock avant-pop noise composers SONIC
YOUTH, I figured right about now would be a good time to start a thread
dedicated to worship the ground they walk upon, or, at the very least,
bow down before them; giving much props to the progenitors -- Thuston,
Kim, Lee and Steve (yes, Jim O'Rourke has left the group (amiacably, of
course, he was just there for Sonic Nurse and some of the SYR
releases.)

Image

Anyways, just got the new disc, Rather Ripped; haven't dived fully
into it yet, but what i've heard thus far is nothing short of brilliance;
being both readily acessible and arty / neato. Of course, my fave SY is
and will always be EVOL (the first album of thiers I bought, back when it
first came out in '86?) which is, arguably, their most challenging record
(arguably, again, the most no-wave of the bunch; like a permanent
stoney, rainy day with ultraviolet rainbows on fire with cosmic love and
peace), but theres something so beautifully simple and pretty and, yes,
even pop-y about this album that makes it feel like a milestone; a
statement which mixes an endlessly inventive youthful freedom and
vitality with a depth of wisdom and withitness that I don't think exists with
any other band on the planet (with the exception, perhaps, of
BOREDOMS, which I htink occupy an equally holy space in the
cosmosphere of the Everythang...

Image

Anyways, please use this thread to post your thoughts on the worlds
greatest living art-rockers, SONIC YOUTH...

Oh, and, yes, KIM GORDON is the worlds hottest rock-MILF; the Stevie
Nicks of art-noise-free-rock...

Hell yeah.

Sonic Youth are at Lallapalooza (spelling?) this year. Should be interesting.

if it werent for sonic youth, us bands that have like 50 different guitars in like 50 different tunings would get laughed out of venues.

And ATP for all the UK-ers, which I think I mentioned elsewhere earlier.... Thurston also did a secret solo show in a pub in London a few months ago, gutted I missed that. He is possibly my all-time favorite guitarist:

Fucking awesome....

Anyone see Kim and Thurston's 'Perfect Partner' Film / Live soundtrack malarkey at the end of last year? Sadly wasn't into that at all... such a dissapointment as its the only time I've seen any of them playing in the flesh.

By far, their most "acessible" endeavor, 12 songs, only two tracks over six minutes, with seven songs under four minutes. Melodic, hooky, the Rather Ripped title is apprepo, they've trimmed the studly, and did something I thought they couldn't do anymore...surprise me.

I'll steal a quote (from Christgau, I think)(and no, not the "Pigfucker" tag)..."ho hum, another brilliant Sonic Youth record."

gotta go with my first taste as well, Daydream Nation. I was a zit encrusted, braces clad, "mom picked out these dork glasses, thank you very much" 14 when I first heard the glory of Teenage Riot. I didn't know bands could sound like that, I didn't know that music could be CAPITAL A ART and yet still fucking rock, I didn't know these confused, bizarre feelings and urges I was going through could be expressed through guitar sounds.

See 'em if you get a chance, they've developed a preternatural chemistry (25yrs together will do that for you) live, I've never once been disappointed by a Sonic Youth set, from big outdoor shows to mid-size venues to intimate clubs, their professionalism is remarkable, as is their commitment to making music that matters (to them).
Personally, I'm an atheist in the voting booth and a theist in the movie theatre. I separate the morality of religion with the spirituality and solace of it. There is something boring about atheism.

I heard that, brother! ALTERNATE TUNINGS FOREVER!!!

(also, make sure to thank Glenn Branca -- the man who taught Thurston
and Lee everything they know...)

Ha ha! Awesome!

I too am a lifelong fan of SY (well, since '86 anyway; I was 14; bought
the album cause I thought the cover looked cool.) I met Thurston Moore
at Dame Darcy's Manhattan flat back when she lived down the LES; she
was shooting an XMas episode for her cable access show in her dinky-ass
super expensive sugar daddy bankrolled apartment so we all played
XMas songs. Thurston's was better than mine (but he did say he thought
mine was cool! (inside: me spazzing out on a cosmic level; outside: me
affecting typically affected NY cool.)

In all seriously, all the craziness that went on back in those crayzay NYC
days, this was probably my favorite night; hanging out and playing songs
in an intimate setting with a musical hero? Shit, that was a goddamn
XMas miracle...

Oh, btw, I hear ya on the Daydream Nation; especially "Teenage
Riot" which gets my vote for best song ever written; but Evol took
me to a place musically that I had never experienced at the time; I
played that thing till I practically wore out the grooves (and stretched the
tape... thank god for CDs!)

Back in the day a certain Earl Hickey could be seen tricking out and eventually dying in the Spike Jonze music video '100%'.

At the very end the song ends with a rather nice 720 kick flip by Lee.

Hopefully one day there will be a thing on Earl's list...

Get the first single from SY's new album The Eternal for free! There's some excellent offers for pre-ordering the album too.

When did they jump over to Matador Records?
