The first man to completely embrace his dorkitude, and exploit it for millions of dollars over three decades....

Respect him? Hell, I wanna marry him.

Dare To Be Stupid.

I used to play Running With Scissors all the time when I was in the Navy. All the other sailors in the shop would get pissed and beg for me to put something else in. Sometimes I did, but mostly, it was Weird Al.

the greatest thing about weird al is his band.
steve jay, dave "bermuda" schwarz, and the dude that plays guitar are awesome. often, they play a track better than the band that originally recorded it did. and have you ever seen them live? fucking amazing. i got to check em out at Street Scene (outdoor music festival in san diego) one year. it was general admission, like a club, so i was right in front of them and it was great. in 45 minutes, motherfucker did like 5 or 6 full costume changes. even one that included the studly suit, and makeup! and the band was tighter than a nuns snatch. they were just as entertaining, if not more than he was. but then again, as a music nerd, it kind of figures.

oh, and that polka thing he does on every record is fucking genius. polkas on 45? genius! its so satirical at times, and i dont even know if its intentional. his bohemian rhapsody is better than queens. yeah, you heard me correct, weird al does that song BETTER THAN QUEEN! love me some yankovic.

I have loved Al since I first heard him on Dr. Demento 25 years ago -- "Another One Rides the Bus," recorded in the dorm bathroom for echo with Al on vocals and accordion and some buddy on a cardboard box drum. He's come so far.

More than Al's specific song parodies, I enjoy his thematic homages to/parodies of musical styles or groups. "Dare to be Stupid" is perfect Devo; "Germs," especially with the costumes, is more NIN than Trent Reznor himself. And his non-thematic originals can be astounding. After dozens of listenings I can hardly keep up with "Everything You Know is Wrong." On the other hand, we have "Albuquerque," but everyone bombs out occasionally.

I miss the glasses and mustache.

Yeah, I still have a hard time getting used to the "new look" Al even all these years later. It's like looking at Pee-Wee Herman if he grew a mustache.

I just finally got used to Alex Trebek sans 'stache, but I can't get my head around a smooth faced Weird Al. It just doesn't compute.

i hear you.

i was actually arrested following the rampage i went on when i lost an ebay auction for a laserdisc of "The Compleat Al" to some douche. lord was i pissed. i had to settle for an old VHS rental copy instead. ive never seen a laserdisc avalible since that one time. dont you hate that shit?
HBO used to run it, and i had taped it. but it was edited down to a little less than an hour. boy was i pleased to find out that there was like an extra 30 to 40 minutes of material on the store bought one. yipee!

I saw Al live way back in 1999. I was only 14, but it was great. The effort he puts into his shows is amazing, all of the different costumes, sets, props... amazing. His last few albums haven't been great, but still amusing. The new one (out next week) has a couple gems on it. Still, I have very fond memories of Running With Scissors.

Five or six years ago Al came to our small performing arts center. My wife and I didn't go because we didn't want to spend the money. Bad idea. When we saw "'Weird Al' Live" we realized what we had missed.

There's two VHS versions of The Compleat AL over at Ebay, for what it is worth.

Doesn't Al have his own website yet?

Don't be scared. Those links usually disappear soon anyways, so get it while you can. I have more where that came from.

That video is amazing. Donny Osmond is hilarious in it, and that's a miracle in itself. Bought the new album last week, it's quite good.
