godzillasushi for the win!

From Pollstar:

Van Halen Postponed Indefinitely.

Well, that didn't take long, did it? They hadn't even announce the dates and venues. Is anyone really surprised?

I suppose I thought they would at least make it through the first half of the tour before they called it off.

Yay!

Van Halen is teh suk.

My intelligent analysis...

NASHVILLE (Billboard) - Van Halen will announce a 50-date American reunion tour with original singer David Lee Roth during a news conference in Hollywood next week, sources said.

The arena trek will begin in early October.

Roth, who split from the rock group in the mid-1980s in hopes of solo stardom, will reunite with co-founders Eddie Van Halen on guitar and brother Alex Van Halen on drums. Eddie's teenage son Wolfgang will sub for Michael Anthony on bass.

A proposed summer amphitheater tour by the group never got off the ground, with Eddie Van Halen entering a rehabilitation facility for undisclosed reasons in March.

In the months since, the guitarist has been seen publicly looking healthy and fit.

Van Halen last toured in 2004, with Roth's replacement, vocalist Sammy Hagar, grossing nearly $40 million, according to Billboard Boxscore.

You know, Dave was one of the best rock singers ever when he was in his prime, but has anyone heard him sing lately? Are you sure you WANT him to come back?

Wow, not much love for Van Halen, huh?

Someone mentioned they did pretty good covers, yeah, they certainly did. Have a listen to "Pretty Woman". Just the solo guitar at the very beginning is enough for me.

EVH is one of my guitar gods. He truly is. I'd go just to hear him play guitar for 2 hours. It might also be amusing to see Roth try to jump again.

I did like these guys though. I used to live on a street called Panama. So I got a kick out of that song.

Hagar was OK - I prefer him solo though. His "Marching to Mars" CD was pretty decent.

Actually, he was never close to being one of the best rock singers. And he sounds the same now as he did then.

Yeesh is right.

Okay, fine - technically, he's not a great singer. What I really kinda meant was just his stage presence. C'mon, he's Diamond Dave. When you think of cheesy '80s cock rock, you think of him. All there is to it.

My favorite Van Halen memory is thus -

I'll agree that he was a dynamic stage performer. I was just pointing out that he was never much of a singer.

Just clarifyin'.

Yeah, I don't think anyone in their right mind can say David Lee Roth was an outstanding vocalist. He got by, just like alot of those 80's lead singer rockers. Axel Rose from GNR, another example.

Axl's got a lot of power in his voice, though. Not the best-SOUNDING singer 100% of the time, but for the kind of songs he applies it to, it fits perfectly. 'Welcome To The Jungle' is a perfect example of this.

Congrats, Maui! Please post pics of yourself wearing one of these jumpsuits.

Axl also has a good sense of melody, and the ability to sing on key. David Lee Roth has only the vaguest conception of what a melody is.

Van Halen is one of those bands that made it big because of the BIG 80's. Flash, style, and just enough substance to be relevant. Difference here is that Eddie is an impressive guitarist. And his brother is a hell of a drummer. DLR is just... DLR. He is not a good singer, by any stretch. That's why I prefer Hagar. VH was a fun band. That's about it. Again, it comes down to the excess of the 80s, and that's why they're huge. That, and they're a train wreck post-Hagar. It's one of those situations where people get excited because they're expecting a return to form that they haven't had since ... well, I guess the 2004 tour. But with Eddie's problems, DLR's being DLR, Anthony missing, Hagar refusing to be a part of it, and no good new material in ages... leave it alone.

I guess this poses a decent question: what will happen first, Van Halen's tour with DLR, or the release of Chinese Democracy?

Eddie Van Halen is a master guitarist, but he never pushed himself much, musically. He'd rather be a noisemaker than a musician (sort of like Steve Vai, in that sense). And Van Halen's music never really got much above horny-teenager rock - very dull.

I would have liked to hear Eddie in the context of a good prog-rock band.

And Chinese Democracy will never be released. Axl is just too fucked up.

Eddie Van Halen + Joe Satriani + John Petrucci.

Put those three on a stage in front of Neil Peart, Les Claypool and Bruce Hornsby (on keyboards, no vocals here), and you have one of the greatest prog rock instrumental acts of... forever.

I'd substitute Eric Johnson for Petrucci. And if only John Entwistle were still alive ...

No argument with Satch, Peart, or Hornsby here, though.

Cool, they could sing On The Tweak Again! hahaha

Love Satriani one of my favourites. Gary Hoey is pretty darn good as well. Anyone heard Hoey do "WipeOut"? WOW!

I wonder if Dave can still JUMP!
