I'm sure there aren't many jazz aficionados here on AICN, but the heck with it.

Joe Zawinul died on Sept. 11. He was a very influential keyboardist who helped usher in the jazz-rock fusion style, especially with Miles Davies in the late 60s. He played on Davis's important albums In A Silent Way and Bitches Brew.

After leaving Davis, he formed Weather Report, which, along with Chick Corea's Return To Forever, carried fusion from its infancy into the prominent position it had through the 70s and 80s.

Joe Zawinul was a tremendous musician. May he rest in peace.

I can't say that I've ever heard of the man, but I am not big into Jazz. I can say that I've heard at least a piece of the man's work, however, as I have heard Bitche's Brew many times.

Man, we're losing a lot of artists lately. I hope there are some very talented kids on the verge of breaking through, because seriously... Emo is not "important" enough to remembered as anything more than a footnote in musical history.
