Zoner Musicians Unite!

Postby Vegeta on Tue Oct 16, 2007 12:49 am

Do we have any musician's in the Zone?
Did you play the Triangle in the school band or do you shred a wicked rendition of Eruption?
Regardless, share you musical experience with us... Who knows, maybe we can start a band... :-P

Myself I played electric bass for about ten years and I can pick one up today and still be fairly competent, eight years after selling my last bass.

Currently, I am teaching myself guitar, but unfortunately don't have the drive of youth to really work at it like I did when I was a kid. Sad to say I do have a nice Gibson SG that collects more dust than kicks out riffs these days. :(

Lately, I've been thinking of picking up a "C" harmonica to play with while on all the many road trips work makes me take.

*Mods, I glanced through the music forum and didn't see anything like this, if this thread is a dupe feel free to lock.

I was forced to learn the piano and violin as a kid, but gave them both up after only a few years. I can still tinkle the ivories fairly well but the last time I picked up a violin was painful for everyone involved.

I have played the guitar for about 18 years and am pretty good. My old man showed me chords then I taught myself by playing along to CDs. Playing the guitar is the one thing I have missed most during the last year travelling. I have three back in Blighty - a Washburn acoustic, Aria Pro II bass and a black Les Paul Standard which I came close to selling to finance my trip. I'm damn glad I didn't.

Before I came away I was living with my folks and there were an insane amount of instruments in the house. Two basses, three six-string acoustics, a twelve-string acoustic, Les Paul, Strat, Telecaster, a Marimba Slide and a Sitar. I have tried, but the sitar is well difficult to play.

Now that I have my own place again I have bought a nice Fender acoustic and am desperately trying to get my fingers to toughen up again. I can barely play for twenty minutes before the pain becomes too much and skin starts coming off.

Wish I had stuck with the piano to be honest - every time I see someone like Jools Holland rip it up I regret quitting. The theory just bored me to death and I was forced to play stuff that sucked. Plus, my teacher was a foul-smelling toad of a woman.

Drummer here.

Was in school band 6-11 grade. Marched in a drum & bugle corps for 5 years. Two years of Music degree classes before I dropped. Youth orchestra, community bands, University bands. Taught many different high school bands' percussion sections over the past 16 years. Arranged music for marching bands in Michigan. Arranged/composed music for winter drumlines (2 WGI world championships in there). Currently teaching percussion to a couple of Middle schools.

And add to that too many failed (rock/funk/jam) bands to bother remembering.

I've been without a drumset for 3 years now. 2 years ago I was diagnosed with hypertension. I can guarantee that if I had the means to drum again, that would go away.

I'm down for starting a Zone band.... even if it's just in spirit.

I'm a guitarist, as everyone knows. I've been playing for 35 years.

Here in SoCal, I have a Yamaha 6 string acoustic, a Stratocaster, and my trusty old Yamaha 12-string acoustic. In Toronto, at my sister's house, I have a Telecaster, an Ibanez copy of the old Gibson ES-335, and probably an old classical.

I know what to do with a keyboard, having taken a couple of years of lessons as a kid, but I don't practice it, so I'm not good. I have a Casio synthesizer I sometimes use to help write and record.

I used to play the flute fairly well, but I haven't owned one for twelve years or more.

I can sing fairly well, and I love singing. I'm lousy at singing harmony, though. Gotta work on that.

Yamahas are massively underrated guitars - they feel much nicer than some things which cost twice the price. I was torn between a Yamaha and a Fender acoustic when I bought my new one last week despite the Fender being about 50% more expensive. Luckily my savage bargaining skills got the Fender price level with loads of stuff thrown in.

The shop had loads of those cool Chinese giant harp things which I messed about with for a bit. Damn good fun but the natives were far from impressed.

I'm a bass player. I got my first about a decade ago and, not ever having had any proper lessons, am competent to a certain extent.

Played in some bands - a covers band at university and a a few static bands.

I learned bass in HS and played with some punk and 90s emo bands during that time period. We used to organize shows for charity and get some decent bands to play with us. Since then I haven't really played anything, but that might be changing soon.

I haven't played in awhile, but I used to play piano, clarinet, and guitar. I was teaching myself to play drums as well. I've been thinking of starting back up, but I live in an apartment, and I doubt the neighbors would like all the noise...

I used to play guitar in my apartment all the time. Nobody ever complained. Of course, if you're playing electric, you might want to use one of those amps with a headphone output, so you can blow out your own ears without disturbing anyone else.

Well, I've got me a Gibson Lester ( Les Paul for those playing along at home )
which I adore. Perfect for writing and recording, using my wee Roland amp.
I have a Yamaha keyboard, drum machine, flute ( no, not that one ) and am looking for an inexpensive base.
Used to record on an olde school four track, but am attempting to switch over to digital, running everything through the computer.

Pity I can't play worth a wiggly turd.

Thanks Sepp.

Right, i was gonna make another thread on this, but i wasn't sure if there was enough of us to warrant one.

Got a Thermin that some Russian had to smuggle over during the cold war in a glass case somewhere?
Got a Recorder that the school made you pay 4 quid for, even though learning it was compulsory?
Got a Tupperware container filled with grains of rice lying around from your days in the percussion section of some new age band?
Any instrument at all?

Post your musical setup.
Pictures too, if you feel like it.

The idea's probably been done in other sections, like "post your entertainment setup" or "post your gaming setup".
I don't think it's been done for instruments though.

Currently have:

- Squier Vintage Modified Jazz bass
- a wee 8" Orange combo amp
- Electroharmonix Big Muff Pi pedal
- Boss Overdrive pedal

...and about to buy another bass, and probably changing amps, soon due to possible band action.

Gibson Les Paul ( Epiphone ) Sunburst electric
A groovy but unnamed bass ( collected for recording purposes only)
A sweet Roland Cube Amp
A new Behringer BXL 450 Bass amp ( 45 watts; most practice amps clock in at 10-15 watts)
Peavey Rage 158 amp
Yamaha Keyboard
Roland Drum Synth
Flute ( ancient )
Tascam Porta 03 Four Track Tape Recorder ( stone age )

Used to have an ARP Quartet that could make noises I was hearing on Genesis albums at the time ( early 70s ).
Man do I miss that.
And my 1962 Gibson Jazzmaster guitar. And the Alvarez 12 String. Sigh. I've owned too many guitars. Once had a Tesco Bass that was made out of concrete. A dark grey monster. But it was playably sweet.
Sorry. Got lost. Home from work and decently medicated. Continue.

This sounds familiar. Except for the "competent" part. But although I've used the base to fill in blanks spaces in certain songs, or learned enough of certain songs ( Smoke on the Water....oh gimme a break. It WAS the 1970s after all ) to fart around with other musicians ( re: any number of stoned jerks with guitars), I've never played the bass. Working on that. Got me a DVD and a scale chart and been jamming along with Golden Earring, Alan Parsons and Jeff Wayne's War of the Worlds ( start with something doable). One day I'll try on Paul Newton's gorgeous bass runs in Salisbury, by Uriah Heap. By then I'll be a big boy. And have a newer bass.

I have:
- an Aria SG-1 (fender knock-off)
- an Arbiter Flats drum kit
- a 1967 Mason & Risch piano (It's an upright piano with a grand piano pedal design and a real wooden soundboard)

I'm not especially adept at playing any of these instruments, but I enjoy playing them. I only bought the drum kit to fill in gaps for when I play my guitar and usually have friends play it while I jam. I'm probably best at playing the piano, but probably because of the training I received, I usually fall back on playing jazzy and classical sounding tunes over anything rock & roll. I am totally self taught on the guitar, and play surf music and heavy power chords.

The only time I ever played the bass was when some friends and I rented one for a month during my university days so that we could play some coffeehouse gigs and talent shows. We were all guitarists and would just swap instruments around so that I wound up playing bass on about a third of the songs. Our arrangements were pretty rudimentary, so I found it easy. But just for fun I tried to learn John Entwistle's bass part from the Who's "The Real Me" off the Quadropenia album. This was impossible and I became convinced that Mr. Entwistle must have had a few more fingers than I do.

KONcaster is a piece of shit left over from the senile youth days. Made with the remains of an encore KC3, a lot of wood filler, a plank of mahogany, a carpet tile, a square 5mm thick sheet of aluminum, the cheapest pickups i could find at the time, a tin of enamel paint & a lot of hard work.

It has this weird natural echo/reverb thing going on, so i put the carpet tile in to baffle it, but it really doesn't.
Mahogany is in the back, holding the trem into the body. Trem sprang up one day & the three springs went flying (yeah, i had the back plate off after re-stringing it), had to sort that out with filler, raw plugs & then the wood.
Half of the body had to be re-done with wood filler too, it would just splinter every time i picked it up.
Aluminum polishes up real nicely, makes it look the part.
It's a time bomb now though, the carpet will probably catch fire at some point.

Not pictured:
Drum machine, no idea what brand, it's in the loft somewhere.
Casio keyboard & midi controller.
Ridgewood electro-acoustic guitar
Encore acoustic guitar
Some no-name nylon guitar.
The Danelectro Talkbox that makes me look like a fucking tit.

Amps:
Squire 10w practice amp
Zoom 30w amp with lots of effects built in. Some of them good, some of them bad, but it also has an auxiliary input that comes in quite handy.

Frankenguitar..... put some bolts near the top of the neck.

Had an old Hondo acoustic POS ( piece of shite ) like that - held together with obscenities and gum and best un-named bodily fluids. Gave it the olde Pete Townsend treatment one day thanks to a fit of raging ennui.
Bastard took a beating. Gotta admire that.

Heh, my dad did the same thing with a Spanish acoustic that his uncle had gave him.
I was maybe 8 at the time.
He'd fitted new machine heads & re-strung it, was about to tune it & noticed the bridge had lifted from the sides. He just smashed it in the middle of the living room.

My, erm, step grandfather i guess, he's got some guitars in really bad shape.
He has a 12 string electro acoustic that's warped so bad it's almost C shaped.

The guitars they had in school were these shitty 3/4 sized nylon monstrosities that looked like they had been through the wars.
They were almost like Willie Nelson's old guitar, with like no back pannel & 2 sound holes in the front, one fist shaped.
They never had 6 fucking strings on them either.

The teacher used to say "well you're learning bass, you don't need six strings," but out of maybe 20 of these things, none of them had EADG.
It'd be a strange combination, half of them only had the high & low E.

The teacher was deaf too. Used to turn his hearing aid off after handing out the sheet music.
That probably says more about the class than it does him though.

Does anyone play, or owned, a Ukulele?

I'm looking to buy one and was surprised how inexpensive they appear to be.
