maybe explicit lyrics DO lead to teen sex!?!

Sigur Ros is the greatest living band. Discuss.

maybe explicit lyrics DO lead to teen sex!?!

Teens who listen to rap have sex!

They found that adolescents who were exposed to the highest levels of sexually degrading lyrics were twice as likely to have had sex by the end of the study

of course, nary a mention of that pesky little thing "black" music tends to have in spades (heh)...

I bet that, fifty years ago, teens who listened to Elvis were twice as likely to have sex.

And before Elvis, teens who listened to Frank Sinatra were twice as likely to have sex.

Notably, teens who listened to Pat Boone seemed to have no sex at all.

Amazing that the cool kids who listen to hip-hop are more likely to get laid than the kid who listens to his dad's old Perry Como LPs...

I like how the story acknowledged and dismissed a key flaw in the logic behind the study in one sentence:

It may be that teenagers who are most interested in initiating sexual activity simply gravitate toward songs with edgier lyrics.

Hmmm, it is, of course, much easier to say that the lyrics are exploiting our little angels than to acknowledge that teens are interested in and have sex, that sex is an incredibly powerful driving force, particularly when you are in the middle of adolescence, and thus the music industry sees a market there to commericalize.

The music is a reflection of kids being horny, not the other way around.

I could see where this could be true as it seems that most explicit lyrics tend to objectify women which has negative side effects on both males and females.

It's Carlton Banks!!!! Where's the Fresh Prince?

Let me just add something to the conversation which has been stated many a time before.

The Carpenters didn't lead to mass Bulimia in people, Kurt Cobain didn't lead to mass suicide (maybe a rape or two), Marilyn Manson didn't lead kids to kill themselves and Hip Hop doesn't lead to underage sex.

As much as I hate most hip hop (not all) and I do think the mass of commercial lyrics are a bunch of women hating, gun toting, culture polluting, shit I still wouldn't want to see a ban of expression rather some guidelines be put in place say that, if the prominent message of the song (and I use the term loosely) is whole positive as opposed to actually just being about 'earning money for da niggaz in da hood n popping my some skanky ass bitch in da ass', then possibly there should be some sort of 'code of conduct'.

How funny would a Hip hop code of conduct be?

They'd done a fair amount for a variety of feminine/feminist causes. Actually I remember when they FIRST hit, they were invited to tour with Skid Row (I know...weird huh...grunge was just starting and hair hadn't died yet), but they declined because of Skid Row's misogynistic lyrics...which was kinda a big deal because at the time Skid Row was MUCH bigger than Nirvana (again, weird to say that).

Anyway, sorry, I'm threadjacking...

1) I read this thread title, and thought it was authored by a pr0n-bot.

2) I was disappointed it wasn't

3) Explicit lyrics don't lead to sex; they lead to trophy winning fucking. When unikrunk was a teen, slipping on some slow, sexy jazz would not get him laid; throwing on some Skinny Puppy or NWA, however, was akin to spray-on panty-remover.

4) That is all.

Yeah... I think sometimes that music/movies have a tendency as getting labeled as trashy or evil by the presence of a word or a theme. I heard nothing but negative reviews of the TRASH of Georgia Rule because it had sexual abuse at the core of the movie. I wish people would take the time to determine what the motivation or purpose of a song/movie is before they begin blaming it for society's troubles.

It does, again it doesn't glorify rape, though. There's a longtime story about a guy (or two guys, can't remember) raping a girl while singing the song, but you can't really say that the song led to the rape. Cobain and Nirvana spoke frankly about these issues, but never glorfied violence against women as a number of the hair bands of the time did.

eh?

Polly wants a cracker. Does that ring any bells?

It does, again it doesn't glorify rape, though. There's a longtime story about a guy (or two guys, can't remember) raping a girl while singing the song, but you can't really say that the song led to the rape. Cobain and Nirvana spoke frankly about these issues, but never glorfied violence against women as a number of the hair bands of the time did.

Wasn't Polly based on a story Kurt read in a newspaper ?

I can't remember if it was a story he read, but it was based on a story he'd heard about a Tacoma girl who was raped.
