Favourite Tribute Song?

Postby Worst Part's Almost Over on Fri Dec 12, 2008 9:42 pm

Many bands/artists have written songs in tribute to people who inspired them who have died. Others have covered songs by other musicians who inspired them who have died. What would you consider, along these lines, to be your favourite tribute song? Give the name of the band/artist, the name of the song and the person the song is a tribute to.

Television Personalities - I Know Where Syd Barrett Lives

There's a little man in a little house
With a little pet dog and a little pet mouse
I know where he lives and I visit him
We have sunday tea, sausages and beans
I know where he lives
Cause I know where Syd Barrett lives

He was very famous once upon a time
But no one knows if he's even alive
But I know where he lives and I visit him
In a little hut in Cambridge
I know where he lives
Cause I know where Syd Barrett lives

And the trees and the flowers are so pretty, aren't they?

He was very famous once upon a time
And no one cares even if he's alive (we do)
But I know where he lives and I visit him
In a little hut by the edge of the wood

Oh shut up!

Good choice! The lyrics are really fun, like a nursery rhyme. Very much in keeping with Sid's style. Reminds me of 'Bike' and the childish glee of those lyrics :D

Exactamonde, dude. That's exactly what I was thinking when I first heard that song. Like a child writing their first story or something. And the melody sounds like something Syd might have come up with, too.

I'll think up some more in a bit, but great topic! (I'm not just saying that because it means the music forum's getting some action for once).

I think my choice is influenced by how beautiful Stipe's lyrics can be when they are at their most abstract. The imagery is so moving, yet so vague, and for some reason that really appeals to me. And the only clear line, the only part of the lyric that is not concealed by imagery, is the starkest and most heartbreaking one of the whole song: 'I had a mind to try and stop you.'

Nothing here is as fine a tribute as Maze recording 'Silky Soul'. A tribute to Marvin Gaye. Very much in style to his songs whilst still addressing lyrically how much he made the lives of those who listened to him much more enjoyable. They didn't even say Marvin's name in the song too. I don't think you can beat this for a tribute song. certainly not so far anyway here.

RC's Mom by the Dead Milkmen.
Seems more than a tribute to James Brown both lyrically and musically.

I'm gonna beat my wife
I'm gonna beat my wife now
Gonna smack her with a lead pipe
Gonna smack her with a 2x4
Run her over with a Brink's truck
Chase her down with a lawn mower

Gonna beat my wife
Look out!

Wife beatin'
Mistreatin'
Wife slappin'
It happens

Gonna beat my wife
Gonna beat your wife
Gonna beat his wife
Gonna beat her wife
Gonna beat my wife
Gonna slap my wife
Gonna kick my wife
Good God, y'all!

Gonna beat my wife
Gonna beat my wife
At the shelter
Helter skelter

Wife kickin'
Finger lickin'
Wife killin'
It's thrillin'

Oh baby please don't beat me, baby
I promise I'll never sleep with the moon in my face no more!

I'm gonna beat my wife
Heh heh heh

I'm sorry but I am bored by anything to do with James Brown. He is the Godfather of Soul apparently based on just a few hits. Build a bridge and get over it. Banging the drum on how great he is. Move on. Stop copying him even.

Why has someone changed my name here twice? I posted the above quotes originally. If this continues, I will be contacting the Administrators about this. That is my written warning.

Boo fucking hoo.

Do you not realize it's the people who run this place editing your name?

Also, for the record, this board has no policy on written warning other than those given by the mods & admin.
What are you gonna do if your "warning" yields nothing?
Complain to Harry?
As if he gives a shit if some over opinionated moron get's banned for being just that.

sigh.

p.s. A verbal warning usually comes first, go & talk to yourself for a little while.

I'm not sure what's happening here. There must be a gremlin in the machine or something. Don't worry though, we've got all our best men working around the clock to fix the problem. You'll be Scottys potty again in no time!

Doesn't matter.
James Brown (actually, his band more specifically) did more positive for progressing funk and r&b than anyone else.

Anyway, to get back to the topic...

All Those Years Ago by George Harrison is probably my favourite tribute song, closely followed by I Dreamed I Saw Phil Ochs Last Night by Billy Bragg. I also quite like Nightshift by The Commodores.

Does Stacy's Mom by Fountains of Wayne count as a tribute song?

I guess the obvious one would be "American Pie" by Don McLean, which is a tribute to Richie Valens, Buddy Holly, and... uh... the Big Bopper? That other guy who died...

Also, that classic song "Girl on TV" by boy-band LFO, which is apparently about Jennifer Love-Hewitt...

I agree with the earlier poster that the Don Mclean song American Pie has probably gotta be the best tribute song so far.

I have seen a band in the West Midlands that have a very good tribute band of ABBA, they have seen much success after the launch of Mama Mia.
