Music of the Decade (00s)

Postby Fried Gold on Wed Nov 18, 2009 8:02 pm

...a musical companion to this thread.

Yesterday the NME (a publication which ceased being relevent in about 1994) published it's "Top 10 Albums of the Decade" list, containing the following:

1. The Strokes - Is This It
2. The Libertines - Up The Bracket
3. Primal Scream - XTRMNTR
4. Arctic Monkeys - Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not
5. Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Fever To Tell
6. PJ Harvey - Stories From The City, Stories From The Sea
7. Arcade Fire - Funeral
8. Interpol - Turn On The Bright Lights
9. The Streets - Original Pirate Material
10. Radiohead - In Rainbows

I think it's a pile of cock. I think you can do better.

This should be interesting, because if a song from the 00s comes on the radio, I usually change the station. Music is one of those things that I think has been on the decline for several years.

Well looking at that, now I know why I feel out of touch with the 00s or can't remember anything outstanding about it to mention.
From what little I heard of Artic Monkeys and Arcade Fire, I didn't think much of them, some tunes were just pretty shit stupid to me.
What the fark are The Streets doing up there?
The Strokes, what I heard, they're OK but not the band of the generation the way that monumental other bands were of previous decades.

Where is Muse at least? Feeder even?

Hate to think this, but with movies too, the naughties really were forgettable, colourless and, I dunno, just a big hole for entertainment culture. Nothing I can think of sticks out at all.

Goodbye.

Seriously, that album rocks. It's sole function was to be turned up loud and make you feel as though you just did a jet stream of dirty speed, and then it reveals that that speed was cut with white dog shit and oil and your skinn starts peeling off and the walls fall down on your head. AND THEN THE BUGS EAT YOU.

Here's Pitchfork's Top 20 Albums of the Decade

And Uncut's slightly random Top 20 Albums of the '00s (two Bob Dylan albums?!)

I'll have to marinate on this one a bit, but I present a local radio show and get tipped onto some great shit every day.

For now, I know I'll include these:

Nathaniel Mayer - Why Don't You GIve it to Me?

Whenever there's a big craze, you'll always find some talented mofos lost in the shuffle, and that's what happened to this guy some '40 years ago with the southern-fried soul scene. Well, some 40 years down the line he hooked up with cats from garage bands like the Black Keys, Jon Spencer Blues Explosion and the Dirtbombs and reconciled the Detroit soul scene to the Detroit punk/garage scene that spawned guys like MC5. Sadly he died a year later, but this fucking awesome document survived. (Here's his cover of John Lennon's I Found Out).

Suishou No Fune - Prayer for Chibi

A double-album which is an ode to their dead cat Chibi. The first side is full of mercury glissandos and sad, collapsed melodies. While the second side is slightly more cathartic, confronting the pain head on. Chibi must have been one hell of a cat!

Leonid Fedorov - Lilovyi Den

The Russians have really been catching up the last couple of decades, after not being able to make any kind of music that sounded remotely Western influenced. This guy was the leader of the shit hot art-rockers Auktyon, but he recently put out his best work with this album of driving acoustic folk songs that are constantly being hijacked by swirls of musique concrete sounds. An inspired slap in the face to folk-rock purists. Think the Russian Tom Waits.

I think I'll also add Swedish neo-psychedelic band Tungen - Ta Det Lugnt (listen to the awesome opening song, Panda), Portishead's third album, Sunburned Hand of Man - Jaybird, Blonde Redhead, Kid A and a couple of others.

Oh my word not only have I heard one of the bands Sepp is pimping I get to correct him on their name too! It's a great day. Dungen not Tungen and I'd agree that Ta Det Lungt is one of the best album's of the decade. That Nathaniel Mayer one sounds excellent too, I shall be tracking it down forthwith.

Well you know, everything's a cult to someone. I mostly get all my recs from rateyourmusic.com. When I'm looking for something to play on my show I'll scan through their lists of genres and whatnot, then blog what I think looks good. If I like what I hear, it gets on the show. That site's by far the most cosmopolitan and broad-minded music site I've seen so far. You get Andean folk music rubbing shoulders with modern classical and Finnish dark ambient (I can't be the only one who thinks there are almost more sub-genres than there are bands these days). I also get the occasional email by listeners who totally grok my taste and want to turn me onto whatever they've discovered, too. The world is bigger than classic rock, yo!

Hmmmmm...trying to come up with some very good 00's Albums...

Fatboy Slim - Palookaville
Daft Punk - Discovery
Gnarls Barkley - St. Elsewhere
Gorillaz - Gorillaz
Farin Urlaub - Endlich Urlaub (Thanks for reminding me, Al!)
Electric Six - Fire
Mark Ronson - Version
Nelly Furtado - Folklore
T.Raumschmiere - Radio Blackout
Deichkind - Aufstand im Schlaraffenland
Moby - Last Night

I think that's all I can come up with for now. The 00's weren't bad, but the 90's impressed me more, music wise.
