Nobody's mentioned the music for Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, so I'll mention it. What a lot of music! Loads and loads of music for many different areas. Some of it is very orchestral-sounding. I like.

I also liked the music for Dark Cloud 2 a.k.a. Dark Chronicle, and I liked the music for Disgaea, although probably I'll go with Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, for most impressive to me personally.

Everything or Nothing had shockingly great music for a video game. No surprise since it was provided by 24's Sean Callery.

Danny Elfman did the score for Fable, that was decent. Final Fantasy is another fave, would love to see that performed live. Battletoads had a interesting sound, the title song sounds alot like The Black Eyed Peas Best Buy commercial.

Battle Arena Toshinden

I liked it so much that I put the game in my cd player so I didn't had to fight all the timie to listen to the music.

Jeremy Soule is the man.

http://www.directsong.com/ <- has Prey, Morrowind and Guild Wars by Jeremy Soule. He's my fave outside of the Myst composers Rand Miller, Timothy Larking and Jack Wall. Epic, glowing melodies to make you wanna go stand on top of a cliff and pose holding a sword.

Legend of Zelda - A Link to the Past.

I still find myself humming the Kakariko village theme from time time.

The soundtrack to ICO is pretty good too.

Metal Gear Solid - Sons of Liberty gets my vote for music (if no one's mentioned it alread), but its predecessor was a better game overall.

It was mentioned earlier, but hearing the music from LEGEND OF ZELDA: OCARINA OF TIME always sends me rocketing back to my fourteen-year-old self, like, full body recall.

It seems that anything Rockstar puts there hands on has great music, especially the compilations they get for the GTA games. Just amazing all those damn radio stations.

Enough of the licensed shiznit! OST's are where it's at.

Halo 2's OST has some fine music by Incubus. It's really the most progressive use of licensed bands and soundtrack I've heard.

Shadow of the Colossus had a really good soundtrack. It had a very sad, mournful tone to it.

How bout the old-school-Galactica hand-held game? It's music was so cool that The Clash put it in Rock the Casbah.

I can't believe no one's mentioned Halo 2. That's one of the few game soundtracks to be released on CD. It's the only one I've ever bought for sure.

Also, ES4: Oblivion is great. The soft melodies while your just walking through the forests are amazing. And when the action kicks in, it's great.

Star Wars games have great music...sure, it's all taken from the movies but it really does place you RIGHT THERE.

Halo had really cinematic music and a catchy-ass theme.

And Giants: Citizen Kabuto had some nice over-the-top action music, which I like.

But nothing beats Gameboy Super Mario Land.

Duh. Your Star Wars comment reminded me of the LOTR games. They had great music, of course (also from the films).

I still really rate the Shenmue theme. I think it was actually written by Yu Suzuki, the game's creator. It really amplified the game's epic feel.

A Shenmue movie would rock my world - a proper movie, not that lame animated one they did, which was little more than a collection of in-game footage.

How about those Catchy tunes which never EVER leave your head...like a bad advert...or a super cool cartoon series.....My vote goes with Mr Myamotos Super Mario World.

I've even got the damn stuff on piano and learned to play it....I should do a recital here in the zone on Mp3

I always felt that certain games didnt get the respect for their music they deserved.

Star Fox has some very memorable and great music. F-Zero for the same reasons. Halo 2 has the coolest opening music track evar. I mean its freaking Steve Vai on a guitar.

As for less popular stuff, I really enjoy the music of the Wave Race games a LOT. And who doesnt love some Outrun?

I also loved the hell outta Guilty Gear X2's soundtrack.

05. BT - Somnambulist
06. Prodigy - Narayan
07. Liquid Tension Experiment - Paradigm Shift
08. Bloodhound Gang - The Bad Touch
09. Rush - Limelight
10. Paul Oakenfold - Starry-Eyed Surprise
11. Liquid Tension Experiment - Acid Rain

17. Balligomingo - Heat
18. Pendulum - Spiral
19. Tiesto - Flight 643 (Paul B + Subwave Remix)
20. Pendulum - Slam

These are on random, of course. Man, going over my list makes me REALLY want to go back through my CD collection, see what cases are empty and fix the ones that have scratches.

Runnerup awards go to (in no real order):

Super Castlevania IV
Bionic Commando
Metal Gear Solid/MGS 2
Final Fantasy IV
Metroid Prime
God of War

This is way too hard to decide. Final Fantasy IV and especially VI have awesome soundtracks.

But then we have the Zelda series. OoT, TP, ALttP and pretty much every game in that series have some really really good tracks.

And like someone else said Shadow of the Colossus has a kick ass soundtrack as well.

There are way too many awesome game soundtracks out there to just decide which one that would be the best.

Off of the top of my head....

Chrono Trigger - ahhh… still one of my favourite RPG’s all be it a bit short.
Secret of Mana
God of War – pumps the shit out of you and makes you want to slam your swards down a Zombies neck.
GTA-Vice City
Final Fantasy VII – Come on… it’s a beautiful game in all respects.
Burnout – I can’t remember which one.
Any Zelda…
Katamari D & We love Katamari – I mean come on it’s crazy Japanese pop and big band... I have it on my Mp3!

Yea the last 2 Burnout soundtracks have been really good. Revenge is my favorite but both are great. EA typically has strong music for its games. I feel sick saying that but two of my favorite series, SSX, and Burnout, usually are set in terms of music.

And this one just came to mind. Just Cause has some really cool music.

Road Rash was very good times! The 32 bit version was all California roads, which I liked, going thru Napa wine country, Sierra Nevada, coastal highways, etc.

Another one I forgot to mention is Coolboarders. They had a kick ass soundtrack as well.

Geeze, you guys are always so wrong around here.

Sonic has always had the best music. Even the absolutely worst Sonic games have great music. Sonic R had great music....that's right, I said it.

Also, Steve Vai did the Halo 2 soundtrack so that's automatically awesome.

Screw your Road Rash lovin selves!!!

Why hasn't anyone mentioned Chrono Cross or Shadow Hearts? I listen to those soundtracks too, too often. Beautiful stuff. Perhaps I am a Yasunori Mitsuda fanboy. I am looking forward to his Luminous Arc score.

Super Metroid was mighty impressive. FFX too.

Phantasy Star II was and still is very good to me. My favorite game of all time, so my biased nature towards the score, is, well biased.

Unless we're talking about really dialogue heavy games, I don't think I've listened to a game's soundtrack in the last ten years (GTA included). Games are generally a perfect opportunity for me to turn the soundtrack down and spin a couple of discs in the background.

Also, considering I like platform games so much, they don't half have the most annoyingly cutesy music this side of Nick Jnr. There are probably quite a few exceptions, but I get so few opportunities to play albums these days that I'm willing to sacrifice a few 1 minute loops.

This game I got called CONAN for the X360 has a perfectly Conan score, it's epic, macho, hard driving. It really captures the essence of the hero.

I've also got Crackdown and enjoy a lot of the music, I was expecting it to be all gangsta rap but they've got a good mix of relaxing techno that isn't intrusive or repetative the way a lot of video game music is and I love latin music and there's a good mix of that stuff in there too.
