Help - Should I get a PSP?

Postby El Scorcho on Thu Dec 15, 2005 8:53 pm

I was wondering what I should ask for for Christmas and I have narrowed it down, but I could use some help in determining if a PSP is worth it...

I am a 20-year-old male college student, I travel a few times a year, I have a 40GB iPod, I own a PS2 which I don't use a whole lot anymore.

But, I finally had a few minutes with a PSP and it blew me away. Yet it still doesn't seem totally practical. I could ask for a new cell phone, a new acoustic guitar, or... a PSP. The idea of watching movies on there intrigues me, and I know there are some pretty stellar games.

Any PSP owners out there? Is it a worthy investment?

Thanks for any help.

Get a DS. The games are much bettter. Watch movies on a decent sized screen and not have to pay more then a DVD to watch a movie you already have.

Get a PSP. The games are okay, but the screen rocks. And why pay for a movie when you can just rip your DVDs to a Memory Stick? I bought one last summer and use it a lot. It's the greatest thing for when you're taking a dump - just play a quick quarter of Madden, or watch some Chappelle. The screen is hella wicked sweet. With a 1Gig Memory Stick (which are seemingly cheaper by the week) you can store a TON of crap on there for trips. And also, the UMD movies look even better than downloads/rips.
Or just save the money. Or blow it on crack & hookers.

Actually, just do what you want to do.

My little bro has one, and man is it cool. Some of the controls are ALF (i.e. Battlefront), but you can watch movies (and porn!)

That is the true screwup of the design - the controls. They should have at least put a second analog nub on there. But on top of that, they should have just designed it more like their controllers with a kickass screen in the middle of it. I have a bunch of games, and I enjoy them.... but movies are my favorite option on it.
And I'm still the only Yes vote

5-5... Thanks a lot guys... LOL.

Does the screen scratch easily (and if it does is there something to protect it)?

The minute I got mine, I also purchased a protective sticker thing that goes over the screen. I haven't had a scratch yet on that........ and I take mine into the bathroom..... a lot.

with the new version (or software download from sony) you also have a real internet browser and link up to a new device sony is releasing to allow you to stream tv data to the psp.

and now they added rss audio playback.

I just got one - it is awesome. I would like to have sex with it. Amazingly, considering my luck, I have no dead pixels! Alas, a pube seems to have stuck itself firmly to my screen protector. £7 for what is essentially a piece of sticky-backed plastic - bastards. Air bubbles galore as well - do I suck or is there a technique?

Get one, Scorcho. Give in.

Holy Crap - I just scanned for wifi access and I appear to have it - I am a bit worried. 32% signal strength coming from somewhere and I was able to visit google before shitting my pants and switching it off.

Will I get found out? Is this legal? Is it my neighbours or possibly one of the many cafes near my house?

probably one of your neighbours, you'll be fine.

if they haven't password protected their wireless, then that's their fault.

and it's not like you're going to be using up a ton of bandwidth with that.

No, it's fine; it just means that somebody near you is using a wireless router and hasn't locked it. You lucky gentleman.

Will they find out? Seems too good to be true. The connection has a name - MCGRINSKY. Is this a brand or a neighbour's surname? It feels wrong but I can't see how I could possibly be traced personally. More likely they would just password it.

Luky bastardo, I'm setting up my own little wi-fi for my house this year with me gift of a g router.

So any kids in my neighborhood within signal shot who get a PSP for christmas have me to thank for being able to google naked chicks from their new toy.

The McGrinsky thing will be the name given to the connection by your neighbour - sounds like they've used their own surname. In my block of flats I get about 4 connections with names like India, Martin, Smith etc - but they are all locked. Don't worry VB, you can't be caught, and even if you could, you haven't done anything wrong!

You are simply a lucky gentleman, as I said.

are the rumors true that the PSP can download games for any system and play them? if so, this sounds like the goddamn thing to get!

not that i want one, really. i prefer console games. but you know, maybe Satan Claws, i mean Santa Claus will drop one down my chimney.

You can hack it to run an emulator yes. But for old consoles. You arent going to be playing Halo on it.

Pudie beat me to it! Yup - what he said. PSP has a great homegrown community - they've got emulators for most things pre-dreamcast.

MAME is the one to get, in my opinion....

Not to go too off-topic, but to help a non-tech saavy friend who is getting one, anyone have a link to a site that covers all the fun stuff, like ripping movies to the memory cards, and using wi-fi and firmware upgrades and anything else I can digest and try to dumb down for him?

Here's a good starting point. Like Pudie says, the best way is to simply search yourselves. But I would recommend becoming a member of a forum like the one I link to above, make a couple of buddies, and they can keep you informed of any new stuff......

engadget.com helped me out last night. I din't realise you had to format memory sticks - took me ages to work out. Helped me install version 2.60 firmware - WITH RSS!!

The homebrew apps only run on old versions of the PSP firmware as far as I know - Sony keep updating it to thwart the 'homebrewmasters'.

After finally getting to really open my PSP up with the multiplayer otions, online play and useage, and everything else it really is the best option out there for a handheld.

Now we just need all the PSP owners to put their collective heads together here to figure out how to tunnel packet over a WiFi connection for ad-hoc play so I can kick all your asses at Burnout: Legends or Grand Theft Auto.
