I just got a Wii for my son. Which means I will be playing with it soon

(mid-Nov).. Not that it isn't totally his and all..

So, tell me people who have been Wii'ed longer than I, what are some good games for this system, taking the nifty controller into account? I wanna swing that thing around and see what it does. Normally I just get games I WANT, but with this controller there is a whole new element to consider when picking something out.

So, I would appreciate your suggestions. (NOTE: I hate racing games and anything Madden. Anything else is good, I am especially fond of survival horror and adventure, but I really just want to fully utilize the controller.) I was considering the latest Zelda. Thoughts?

P.S. What are these number ID dealios you are rambling about Monkey Man?

Each Wii comes with a code. You need to exchange codes with whomever you want to communicate and play with over wifi.

I think the best game that I have played utilizing the Wii-mote is Boom Blox. That game freaking rocks...

) cuz its fun and it has paid decent attention to controller use

I am currently crushing on De Blob - one of the best platformer type games I've ever played with a killer funky soundtrack that really makes the experience. The music is even dynamic so it ramps up as you progess through levels. Great game.

The Force unleashed on Wii is pretty fun but not the prettiest game. Still its fun gesturing to force-push and the lightsaber swings are reasonable responsive, though FAR from the 1:1 sword/sabre people are looking for from the Wii. That will finally be attained when Nintendo releases the "Wii Motion Plus" attachment next spring. It'll be packed in with "Wii Sports Resort" so be sure to pick that one up.

Adventure games? Zelda is pretty damn good if you like the series but don't expect big things from the motion or gesture controls - it was a launch title and a port-over of Gamecube assets so its a bit rough. Still, its a nice deep adventure and worth your money. Also, I hear Okami for the Wii is great, and its a bargain title too. Plus, it uses pointer control for the "celestial brush" mechanic that I hear is petty nice.

Survival Horror? Look no further than Resident Evil 4 for Wii. The shooting controls are great and its an awesome game, even if you may have played it before on another system. And again, its a bargain title.

Also, for a shooter/adventure definitley pick up Metroid Prime 3: Corruption. Just a fantastic game. Awesome graphics and great puzzles, good shooting and play mechanics. Top notch.

Next year, definitely pick up "The Conduit". Its a sci-fi shooter built from the ground-up for Wii and its looking fantastic.

Lastly, for now, you can't go wrong with Super Mario Galaxy. Very fun game that takes the traditional Mario platformer and runs with it in some funky ways. Plus its a beautiful looking game that shows off the system and the play mechanics are very intuitive and well implemented.

Lastly again (did I already say that?) the Lego games are hella fun. The Lego Star Wars is more action-oriented and the Indiana Jones is more puzzle-oriented so there's that distinction, but they're both oodles of fun. I haven't tried the Batman yet but it looks to be more of the same with the hook that you can play through each level from the perspective of Batman and then again from the villains' perspective.

That should get you started. I am, needless to say, a huge fan of the Wii. So, I've got more! Did I mention Guitar Hero yet? World Tour looks to be amazing! Can't wait.

Wowee! Thanks Monorail, that gives me a bunch more to look at. AWESOME! I did look at Zack and Wiki, it looked like it gives the controller a good workout and more importantly the kid could play it too. I don't generally like games by THQ, but my son has mentioned wanting DeBlob so I may end up trying it out.

I have already played RE4 as that series happens to be my favorite. I am a zombie junky and I hope to get a PS3 before the next release. I think I may get Zelda even though it doesn't utilize the controller as much as it could. I thought that may have been the case because of when it came out, but I am a Zelda fan.

I will definitely take a look at the others as well. I haven't played a Mario game in AGES! I have been a dedicated PS user for quite some time. Thanks for all that input!

If you're looking for sheer variety, and you don't mind insanity, then I'd suggest Rayman Raving Rabbids.
It's a great party style game.

Examples of gameplay-
Whirl the wiimote over your head lasso style so that you can hurl a cow long distance in a grave yard.
Flick your wrist like you were throwing a knife, but instead you throw a plunger at a rabbit spinning on a target.
Use the wiimote and nunchuck like drumsticks to keep in beat with a dance.
FPS levels (again with plungers).
Yank worms out of rotting teeth.
Lots of workout games.

Check out some of the videos on youtube, and see if you might like to rent it.
Even I enjoyed inflicting violence upon ALF rabbits.

ChaoticMoira, how old is your son? Some games are better than other for little ones. I have a trio of spawn spanning the ages of 11, 9 and 5. The 11 likes everything. The 9 likes most things and the 5 likes some things, those being De Blob, Lego stuff, Super Mario Galaxy, Endless Ocean, Mario Kart Wii and Guitar Hero 3. She's not the best at all of those but is perfectly proficient at Mario Kart, Endless Ocean and De Blob. De Blob has this "free paint" mode where you just trip around and paint the world (which is the overall object of the game, he's a paint blob ya see) but there's no timer or enemies trying to kill you. She loves that. Same thing with Endless Ocean which is an ocean exploration game with an "open world" concept where you explore whatever you want whenever you want and you don't die (you can pet the sharks!) She also likes bowling but hey, who doesn't? Both Maro Galaxy and the Lego games have some co-op play that is good for a younger player to join in with.

I'm gonna pimp De Blob just one more time as I think this game is going unnoticed which is a real shame. Its one of the best on the system IMHO. I want everyone to buy it so third parties wil continue to supprt the Wii and we'll get more good polished games like De Blob instead of the reams of kiddie-centric shovelware crap the system is filled with. That's one of my biggest complaints aboutthe Wii: its got tons on really offensively shitty games available and people just buy them because they look famly friendly or something. You have to do your homework to find the gold nuggets among the mounds of feces.

Thanks guys. I will have look at the others mentioned. I think I may give Mario Galaxy a try.

Monorail, my son is 11 and I pretty much allow anything rated T or E. If it is rated higher than that I first test it for crude/harshness factor. I am not tooooo strict with censorship but things like GTA or RE are off limits. Blood and fighting games are fine as long as the violence isn't just violence for its own sake and they aren't tooo scary ( I know adults who get freaked by RE alone in the dark).

He just started playing Oblivion and is a junky for it.

Apparently it's only Blockbuster (and others) in Europe, in particular the UK. Nintendo have yet to issue licences to them for rentals.

I can't find much else official info about it.

I saw the pre-order set in the shops over the weekend. I'm interested to see what the bass will like in it.

I got Guitar Hero 4 and Mario Kart for Christmas, and bought FIFA08 in the Woolworth's closing sale for £4.

Guitar Hero is so unbelievably addictive that I've yet to play Mario Kart that much so far.

I went to see about buying some more Wii games today in the sales (Including Guitar Hero 3) and it seems that there are no Wii games left on sale in the local area other than a Spider-Man 3 tie-in and something involving Bratz.

I got a Wii for Xmas, only got Bond so far, thinking about buying a Zapper or a Blaster for it, been playing Wii Sports the most, almost PRO in all events (got about 2 more boxing matches to win and a good few baseball matches).

Haven't been able to play Bond online yet, it doesn't seem to want to connect

JL: Is Bond any good on the Wii? It got crappy reviews.

For shooter shells, "they" say the Nyko PerfectShot is the best. But the Nintendo Wii Zapper comes with a mini-game (Link's Crossbow training) so its a tough call. I don't have either. I just like shooting with the Wiimote itself.

Speaking of which, pick up Resident Evil 4 for Wii. You won't regret it.

some friends of mine got their kids ROCK BAND 2 for the Wii for Christmas

I'd like to continue tot be the "cool uncle" that I currently am but I'm pretty Wii ignorant, I'm still chucking away on my PS2

I thought about getting Guitar Hero WT, but

a)I don't know if it's out for the Wii

b) on my PS2, the Rock Band controllers are compatiable with Guitar Hero WT, but are they for the Wii?

if anyone can help that would be AWESOME

So my Wii Guitar Hero WT guitar will work with Wii Rock Band 2.

cool, thanks for the help, I know my Rock Band 1 "gear" for the PS2 was cross compatiable with World Tour as was my guitar Hero 2 guitar with World Tour-I haven't tried it with Rock Band 2--the only reasonI know this is tht while I perfer the Rock Band guitar my brother HATES the Rock Band Guitar and perfers the Guitar Hero Guitar--anyways, so back on track I was hoping the Wii version would be as well, now I know how to continue to be the cool uncle,

Bloo, I know for sure that on Wii, GH instruments work with RB2 (not RB1). This includes the instruments issued for both GH: World Tour and GH:3 (again, I'm only talking Wii specific). But I don't think it works the other way around. That is, I don't think RB Wii instruments (of any kind) work with GH on Wii.
