I know I liked the original one myself. Oh well. I can only assume they wanted to make it look as ungun like as possible. That way Nintendo will not kill the high they are on...

The good thing is that some companies have already made zappers that look close to the original design.

Although I'm sure the Big N has to have something up their sleeve more than just injection moulded plastic.

Zappers have not fared well at all since the NES zapper. Lack of support did them all in. Maybe the public's embracing of the Wii controllers will make a zapper more acceptable this time around.

I keep hearing that The Godfather is really good and makes excellent use of the wiimote, but my inbuilt resistance to movie-licence videogames means that I haven't checked it out yet. Has anybody played it?

What do people think of the Wii Balance Board? Total gimmick, or useful peripheral?

I'm sure I'll buy Wii Fit, play it for a while and then shelve it forever, but do you think the Balance Board could be used for anything else? The first thing which sprang to mind was a Skiing game....

I haven't played THE GODFATHER on a Wii, yet - but the XBOX and PS2 games alone were a whole bunch of fun. So throw in the motion stuff and far better graphics and I bet the game is fucking aces.

One more reason for me to want the Wii even more :(

Wii or 360?

That's my dilemma. I'm not a hardcore gamer by any measure. I do tend to favour amazing graphics over new methods of interaction such as the Wii mote, but on the other hand I do like the more sporty and fun stuff you get with a Wii.

How do the online services compare?

Online:

360's is excellent, but oyu pay for it. The price is pretty reasonable though, at about £40 a year.

Wii's is free, but fairly cheap-and-cheerful, plus games use the much-maligned Friend Code system, which can make online gaming more tedious than it should be - it's fine once you have a bunch of friend codes in your system though.

It's weird, IMO the games on the 360 are closer to what I'd call "hardcore", but the graphics will certainly impress you more - and if that's a big factor, I'd lean towards the 360. The Wii is a helluva lot of fun, with a lot more games you can just pick up and play....I've had a lot of fun on both systems, so I can't really recommend one outright.

£40 a year???? I thought it was £40 a month. I think that's pretty much decided it for me. The only time I was ever really addicted to a game was playing Counter Strike againt other halls of residence over a T1 line when I was at Hull Uni, I was pretty good too, came 2nd in a couple of the big tournaments that we set up. Yeh that has sealed it.

...

I guess I bet quit this thread now.

So much better than before, feels very natural to control movement with the left hand on the nunchuck and aiming with the right hand.

The only gripe I have is they made Leon so big in their 3rd person view he gets in the way of zombie/creepo blasting sometimes.

They definately make use of EVERY button on both controlers. I really need the blaster rig for this game...

rented POTC:AWE for Wii and had a lot of fun. I think the graphics were lovely and I enjoyed kicking the crap out of baddies by slashing the wiimote as a sword. combo sword moves worked pretty well too. voice acting was good, music was great and there were some fun mini games like pirate dice and pirate poker (basically texas holdem). I didn't finish it but I thought it was solidly enjoyable. I'll pick it up used as soon as i can find it.

Looking forward to getting my mitts on HP:OOTP and/or Madden 08. I've asked for both for my b-day next week, so we'll see.

I got my Wii over the weekend!!! :D

I accidentally got the ladyfriend to reveal she was getting me one for Christmas, so I was able to get it early. (In turn, she gets a necklace and earings of her chosing from Tiffanys. :? )

I've played over at my buddy's for a year now, so I'm decent at Wii Sports and Rayman. I'll be getting a few more games for Christmas, and I'm super-excited.

I hadn't realised how popular Super Mario Galaxy is!

We have a game exchange xmas presents going with some friends, we buy each other Wii games and swap in a few months! Handy :D

However all of the major UK on-line retailers (play, amazon, gameplay, etc) are all sold out of SMG!

I might have to pay full price in a shop, godsdammit

I can't wait til Christmas so I can play Lego Star Wars: The Complete Saga and Super Mario Galaxy that I bought "for the girlfriend's son"

I almost picked up the zapper with the included zelda game the other day and now regret not doing so as they're hard to find now.

I have decided when I have some more free time I am going to attempt to mod my own WiiGun. I'll probablly end up toasting it but I have to try.

I asked for Super Mario Galaxy, Mario Party 8, Super Mario Strikers, Lego Star Wars, Resident Evil 4: Wii Edition (never did finish the GC version, because I was never fast enough with the aiming; I've played the Wii version and it's awesome), and Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles. Probably won't get them all, but those are the early titles I'm excited about. I'll probably pick up Mario/Sonic when the price drops and maybe Battalion Wars 2. Oh, and No More Heroes looks pretty cool.

Love your escape clause at the bottom.

Thanks for the heads up. I cant' believe this is the second year runnning that there's been no Wii's in stock.

That's incredible. We know what's going to win the battle of the consoles.

This has been said before (by godzilasushi at least), but it's not really a battle of the consoles is it? True, XBox360 and PS3 are duking it out, but the Wii just went and made the pie bigger, giving itself a huge piece (i.e. new people becoming gamers). It's not really taking away from XBox360 and PS3, is it?

I still don't consider most of what the Xbox and PS3 produce actually for hardcore gamers.

*opens can of worms*

PC is where that's at ;)

I have been a staunch PC fan since the PS1 days. However, I just found out my brother in law spent £1600+ on upgrading his PC to get DX10 graphics for Crysis, UT3, Bioshock, etc.

I don't have that kind of cash to splash to play games.

£300 on an XBOX 360 will give me HD games on my 37" 1080p TV.

Money is a great deciding factor ;)

What he said. A couple of months after the console came out, all the games dried up and it was very slow for a while – but this is pretty much always the case with new consoles: I know plenty of people who had the same deal with the PS3 (but of course they had shiny Blu-Ray movies to distract them). Right now is the games industry's biggest time of the year for sales, so there's almost too much choice! There are at least 4 new Wii games I'd happily drop money on right now if I could afford it. Mario & Sonic is a lot of fun if you can get a few people together to play, Mario Galaxy is a must-have, but I can't find it anywhere at the moment. Guitar Hero 3 is cheapest on the Wii, because the guitar doesn't need the wireless tech. I'm also frothing at the mouth for Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles, especially if I can get hold of some kind of wiimote gun. This is the best-looking one I've seen so far:

They were available from this site, but are currently sold out

Your piss comes from your testicles? Dude, get that looked at immediately.

It's absolutely true that Nintendo have tapped into a new market, so in that sense they haven't taken many customers AWAY from Microsoft/Sony. But all console companies want their consoles to do well - and all console companies want to expand their existing userbase, so in those terms, Nintendo have pretty much obliterated the competition. And IMO when people talk about the console "war", they are generally talking about "who has sold the most consoles". Again, in those terms, the big N have been the big winners this time round, especially when you consider the fact that they make a ludicrous profit – something like 50 dollars – on every Wii they sell, whereas Microsoft and Sony make a loss on every console they sell; quite a big loss, in Sony's case. So I think the main point is: in four-ish years when the next round of consoles come out, you can expect all of them to have broad appeal and functionality which is inclusive, rather than exclusive. For example, I'd expect the PS4 or the Next Box to be able to receive and record TV broadcasts. I have to agree with Papa that hardcore gamers will opt for the PC, partly because you can upgrade it every year, instead of every four years.
