Computer games translation do not work.

Games are designed to be played, not watched. Watching a game-based film is just like watching someone else play a game. Not interesting. Leave them as games, that is where they succeed.

But watching somebody play can be interesting.

And for a positve exampel of game adaptions, I would say the Silent Hill movie was pretty good where it captured the atmosphere and fell of the game and the problems of the movie were not source related.

Game adaptions can work if done right.

What with all these next-gen consoles, games are becoming more and more like movies, so I'm sure some of them could be made well if they had proper talent involved (and I don't mean being able to box). I bet if Malick were at the helm of a Duke Nukem flick it'd be at least slightly better than that Super Mario Bros film (although....................I'll admit........................I kinda like it. John Legouizamo or whatever the hell his name is ruled in that movie, They did go overboard on the fungi though). Unless you're talking about something like Madden NFL or FIFA, I'm willing to bet that the nucleus of an idea for a game isn't a hell of a lot different from the ideas you'd have before you start writing a screenplay or book. Take that game about humans living in a massive hierarchical skyscraper for example (can't remember what it was called)- that pitch alone would make a wicked movie. You don't have to recreate the whole game down to a T- including the manic 9-hour pile-growing sessions- just take enough to make a movie out of it. Before too long, Hollywood's going to start adapting travel brochures into movies, so they can at least try and get at least one video game movie right.

On the flipside, when a GAME tries to be exactly like a movie, you end up with turdfests like The X Files Movie- still the worst game I've ever played- and Square's The Bouncer.

Anyway, I think these games would make good flicks:

Deus Ex
Monkey Island
Tenchu
Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver
Okage: Shadow King

Monkey Island would be awesome. Hopefully the character won't look anything like the guy in the 3d versions.

..and to be honest, the voices in the later versions were weird. I remember playing MI 1 and just loving the text...so funny.

'I'm not going over to that ghost ship!'
'Ok, how about I drop kick you into the lava then'
'Alright, go then, don't say I didn't warn you'

Or my Favourite would be,
"Wow, I bet if you looked up Empty in the dictionary you would see a picture of this hut".

Thats a point! alot of the comedy comes with interaction so how could that be portrayed in the film?

A difficult Ferris Bueller type conundrum.

Leisure Suit Larry. Just cast Richard Jeni and it's money in the bank
Donkey Kong: Directed by Peter Jackson
Dance Dance Revolution: Just film actors and regular people playing the game
Call of Duty: WW2, guns, bleeding nazis.
FarCry: With Hugh Jackman

I'll think of more later, maybe.

I think making a film out of the Spiderman video game would be a disastrous idea. No matter how much fucking money it made or how annoying a female 'ooh I'm so cutey cutey sweet and nicey' lead you put into the fucking thing!

These are the games I would pay to see as movies:
Grim Fandango
Half-Life
Prince of Persia
Star Wars - Knights of the Old Republic

I think a Monkey Island movie, would be too similar to Pirates of the Carribean. Granted, it would be sillier, but pretty much the same.

Half-Life and Prince of Persia could both work....MGS probably could work as well of course these games have more cinematic stories and structures to begin with thus the easier translation.

This thread makes me a sad sexual harrassment panda. Why? Because it was practically MADE for ZombieZoneSolutions. Seriously, the guy may have been a knee-jerkoff, but if he could do one thing well, it was make a game-to-movie pitch.

Examples, you say?

Well, try these:

The Passion of the Q*Bert
by ZombieSolutions Sep 19th, 2005
12:29:09 PM
i actually heard there was a huge bidding war over who is going to film the Q*bert saga. the Gary Shandling production you spoke of is one possibility. however, last i heard, Mel "Goebbels" Gibson also wanted to direct and produce the film entirely in Q*bert speak ("@#$%!" and so on), and wanted to link the pain of Q*bert with some kind of violently distrburbing anti-semetic message. casting is still in development, but so far Q*bert is supposed to be played by Supreme Court nominee John Roberts (with dyed blonde hair), and Coilee will be played by Judd Hirsch.

The Endless Saga of PAC-MAN Has Often Moved Me To Tears
by ZombieSolutions Sep 19th, 2005
03:15:51 PM
his life seems so tragically pointless -- eat, eat, eat, kill ghost, eat more -- forever and ever and ever. in some ways, Pac-Man can be understood as the ultimate allegory for the human race -- we are born, we run, and we consume; all the while death (the ghosts) await us around each corner. sometimes we are lucky and are able to cheat death by either runing back and forth really fast, or going into a tunnel, or taking a power pellet with which we can defeat death... but death, death always comes back... and ultimately, eventually, no matter how many patterns you have mastered, you are either going to run out of coins or lives... in the immortal words of the late poet-philosopher Carl Crack (of Atarit Teenage Riot fame) once opined, "life is like a video game with no chance to win!!!!!' how true, Carl, how very, very true... lets all take a moment of silence for Pac Man. long may he feast upon the golden keys of life... we love you... goodbye...

OK, the first one is just him doing his rant thing, but I swear I saw about twenty game-to-movie pitches by him in various places, and some were amazing. LODE-RUNNER the movie, anyone?

Final Fantasy: Advent Children was all right. Fantastic looking graphics and camera moves. I admit the story is a little weak, but I did really buy it for that.

A shame because FFVII had such a good story and the way it revealed. They were probably only going to make that as a movie though if the first film did well. I would rather see it as live action though, or slightly more stylized than the other two, make it far more manga style, like the game.

I just remember the shot in the game where you see the city, such a gorgeous landscape.

Now the first two films that come to my mind are castlevania and Duke Nukem.

Castlevania would be quite easy, just keep is quite dark and not cartoony.

Those dizzy games or even james pond: fishtank royale, would make great kids movies.

I really hope one day they remake a resident evil move and learn from silent hill. THE GAME WAS GREAT BECAUSE OF THE STORYLINE. KEEP IT.

Zool would just be too nuts nowadays! That thing nearly made me have a fit. I swear it wasn't meant to be physicallly possible to have all those colours onscreen flashing... AH MY EYES!
