Any new info on this would be great. I keep checking thedigitalbits, but nothing for a few months now. Nothing much from the guy at comic-con either.

Longer is not always better

Postby wonkabar on Tue Aug 02, 2005 8:43 pm

That mini-sereis edit that Universal put out was god-awful. Loved the new scenes but it was a real mess, and the music track was totally off. Plus some stuff was edited OUT for TV. Even if Lynch isn't involved, I think they could still do a better job.

Hell yeah! All I know is that it's 2 disk; the first one has the original theatrical edit and extras such as artwork, interviews, production photos, docs about wardrobe design, and most importantly - deleted scenes, introduced by Dino's lovely daughter, Rafaella. These include the alternate ending and lots of new fight scenes.

The other disk has the extended edition with some never-before seen extra scenes (also fights, mostly).

I heard that it's been delayed because Lynch decided to get involved, so maybe he'll do an interview for it too, and I guess this means that his name will appear instead of Alan Smithee.

But you all probably know most or all of this, as WonkaBar points out, there hasn't been much news for a while

25 August 2005 Dune DVD moving forward?
The production company that was responsible for the extras on Universal's indefinitely postponed "Dune: Extended Edition", has stated that it has recently finished work on "David Lynch's DUNE (Universal Studios Home Video)". Does this mean Universal are just releasing the normal theatrical cut and not the extended edition, or has David Lynch given some input? More information as we hear it.

And some Universal Battlestar-news

For those of you who can't be bothered to find the text

Next up is a title that had been previously announced by Universal, but was then pulled for a time. David Lynch's Dune: Extended Edition will now officially street on 1/31/06 (SRP $27.98). The 2-disc set will include both the original theatrical version (137 minutes), plus an all-new "extended version" (177 minutes) in anamorphic widescreen video, with Dolby Digital 5.1 audio. Extras are currently expected to include deleted scenes with introduction by Raffaella De Laurentiis, 4 behind-the-scenes featurettes (including Designing Dune, Special Effects, Models & Miniatures and Wardrobe Design), a gallery of production photos and production notes. We don't yet have official word from Universal as to whether or not Lynch himself participated (the title was originally delayed in the hopes that he would agree to be involved).

I held off on the collectors thing cuz I was waiting for this. Plus I'm in a different region. I do have a pirate of the shitty Smithee-version though. I think this may indeed be a new cut, as the Smithee one was longer than 177min I believe. But that included the Dumbledore "prologue"

Yeah I'm waiting till about january when some review site spills the beans about this disc.An anamorphic version of the smithee cut?I'll believe it when I see it.As for the deleted scenes will this be stuff we've never seen before or just stills/extractions from the smithee cut?The behind the scenes stuff looks promising but from what I've heard alot of the cut footage got destroyed in a fire/flood at universal years ago so I'm not expecting much else.

For the UK fans, it looks like The Sunday Observer newspaper is giving away a free DVD inside the paper.
Here is some info and a nice high-res trailer:

I hope the Dune DVD give away is because they expect a surplus with the release of the Dune EE on its way iminently?

I already own this film three times so I wont be buying the newspaper even though this is fantastic value for money.

Highlander is being given away on Sunday with the News of the World which I might pick up even though I just borrowed it from a buddy because I haven't seen it in years.

I hope to god this isn't the same crappy "Alan Smithee"" TV-version with the stupid "prologue" drawings, male narrator and fucked up music cues. You know, extended editions of old movies come out all the time these days...if Universal copped-out by putting that shite-Smithee version on the disc I'm gonna be really fucking pissed. I know Lynch didn't wanna be involved with this release, but a monkey could do a better edit than that Smithee-cut. So I'm hoping they got somebody to whip up a NEW extended-version. I mean how hard could it be? The Smithee version is almost 20 years old. You can't get some guy into an edit-bay with copy of Lynch's original script? Just fix the music, put Madsen's original narration back in, along with the stuff that was cut for TV, and for fuck's sake ditch that fucking god-awful hand-drawn prologue! No wonder Lynch wanted his name taken off... morons.. Simple right? I could it in a goddamn day. But alas, I've been let down by Universal before. You fucktards better have done it right this time or I'm gonna fucking lay down the the hell-fire hex on your ass.

Wowsers, that looks bitchin'!!! So what's the deal on the extended cut (which appears to be 40 minutes longer than the theatrical version)? If it's not the Alan Smithee version, then who edited it?

It is the Alan Smithee version...this release is bitter-swee for met. I'll be glad to own it, but I was really crossing my fingers for a new cut....oh well. It appears that this is gonna be a big seller(it was #17 on amazon when I peeped the top-sellers the other day), so maybe on the HD or Blue-ray edition Universal will dish out a little more cash and do it right. I really hate that Smithee prologue.

What the f&^k?! This has been out for months in Australia....in a cool ass metal DVD case:

Check it: Image

Packaged in a Metal DVD cover with 2 versions of the film and an extras disc. Extra version is 177 minutes long)

DVD Features

Dune: 3 hour extended edition
Impressions of Dune: A feature documentary including cast & crew interviews and behind the scenes footage
Destination Dune: A vintage promotional film, thought lost, that was made in 1984 on the set of Dune
Interview with Frank Herbert
Cast & Crew Biographies
Original Theatrical Trailer

And yes...the "Extended Edition" is a Pan & Scan Alan Smithee version.

This ones in a metal case too, and the extended edition is widescreen rather than Pan/scan. It doesn't have the "Impressions" or "Destination" docs or the Herbert interview. It does have the so-called "deleted scenes" though. I say say "so-called" cuz a couple of them, despite what Dino's daughter says, WERE in the movie at one point...they're in the friggin Marvel-comic for god's sake. Like I said, once Universal gets the returns on this I'm sure they'll be wanting/more willing to put out a bigger-badder edition on a new format in the near future...with or without Lynch's help...along with more extras hopefully. Anyway, here's some more details

I got it. I'm a whore, but I love Lynch and it's a pretty case.

However, it should be noted that Universal putting out a two-disc set turns out to be too good to be true: it is a dual-layer double-sided disc.

Also, worth noting is that there's a four hour cut out there, and that it might be possible to assemble it from the material provided on this disc.

So my question is this - is the "extended version" on this new DVD release the one that opens with a lousy, poorly drawn intro? Where they replaced Virginia Madsen's voice over with some dude? Those cartoonish drawings were uber-crappy. The additional scenes were interesting, but seemed poorly edited. I'd like a nice, expanded edition of Dune, but IS THIS IT?

I just got this yesterday and I started watching the Theatrical Cut last night. A few years ago I didnt really like Dune, now its one of my favorite sci fi films. Its one weird ass movie, but its intriguing. As its been stated, It came in a really cool tin case, that was a nice suprise.

Dino, salud on this film paisan!
