which is preferable, a higher speed single core (like at 3.8Ghz) processor or slower dual core (like at 3.0Ghz) processors? I don't know much about the dual core processors, do they really help performance?

I am interested in hearing your reasons for requiring a laptop.
For instance, I have a gaming friend who is a pilot that travels to Asian and European locales and he needs a gaming laptop with him, so he can play in the hotel room on layovers. His Dell cost $3800, and its kick ass.
For $2,000 you are going to get a gaming laptop that's already grossly obsolete as compared to what you could buy with that amount in a desktop. I'm advising you NOT TO BUY A LAPTOP FOR GAMING.
