I saw the new Asterix movie yesterday.
The animation was pretty high quailty, with great clean-up work. The lines were very tight and dynamic. The viking chief and his daughter stealed the show in my opinion. Sometimes the action and editing seemed to be a bit on the slow side, though.
The story was very simple and predictable. This wouldn't have been such a bad thing if I would have cared about the emotions of the characters, but even that never happened. They had some interesting plot points between certain characters, but they never came over as convincing, leave alone you care about it.
The worst thing, however, is that even this movie became a victim of the trend for animation to be hip. This was especially notable in the overkill on pop songs, something that just doesn't fit in a movie that takes place 2000 years ago. The comics have a lot of modern culture references too, but they happen on a more subtle different level.
It was nice to see a traditional animated feature in cinema again (it has been a while for me...), and I had a good time. But you never get involved in to the story, and before I knew it, the movie was done, while it never seemed to have taken off.
How ever, it once again proves some hope for high quality traditional animated features in Europe, and I can only look forward to that!
