Who's More Grizzled? (Now w/ POLL)

Postby TheBaxter on Sun Apr 30, 2006 1:43 pm

Which actor in film or TV is the most grizzled?

If you don't know what "grizzled" is, check out this SNL sketch

so.. who's more grizzled? enter your nominations below, and when there's enough, i'll post them in a poll.

For starters, an obvious nominee would have to be Clint Eastwood.

Mmm, it's hard to say. Where does old, become grizzled? OK forget that one, that sounds like a bad set up to a bad punch pine.

I think Harry Dean Stanton would have to be on there.

It seems a lot of the grizzled vet actors have left this mortal coil the last couple years, I guess they weren't really grizzled enough.

Anyway my nominees are:

Alan Hale
John Huston's dad from Treasure of the Sierra Madre
Warren Oates (only when unshaven, when he goes babyfaced he just looks like Painless from M.A.S.H.)
Dale Tremont Presents...

I'd say Redford is the OPPOSITE of grizzled.

Look up grizzled in the dictionary, and you see this guy:

Clint Fucking (actual middle name) EASTWOOD.

Oh, and the last dozen years or so of Kris Kristofferson.

But that's a far cry from Nolte and Elliot, just submitting names for the ballot.

I have to agree with Nachokooloaid. Clint Eastwood is the most grizzled person to ever walk the face of the earth. He's so grizzled, I guarantee that you could light a much off his face. He wouldn't even flinch.

True story: one time Clint Eastwood was in a military plane that went down near San Francisco Bay and he swam all the way back to shore in the middle of a thunderstorm.

If he were any more grizzled, he would have to be made out of stone.

What about Joe Don Baker? He may not have the scraggly beard, but you best believe he's got everything else required to be called a Grizzly Bear.

And one of my favourite actors, Klaus Kinski, wins it for me:

Urban ditionary:

1. Grizzled 10 up, 1 down

Worse than grundy. The result of being exposed to something terrible for a long period of time and having the results show through your appearance and state of mind.

Mainly used when referring to a sailor.

I met the most grizzled harbor master in Maine.

Here's an exchange between two hard sonsabitch, knock ya down sure as they'd look atcha. H@rry Morgan and John Wayne, respectively, in The Shootist (courtesy iMDB):

Carson City Marshal Walter Thibido: Books, I want you out of town. These are law-abiding people here and I don't want any trouble. I can deputize as many men as I need to see that you leave.

John Bernard Books: I'm not going anywhere, Marshal. I'm dying and I intend to die right here.

Every goddamn minute of The Shootist rates a Grizzle Factor of 10 on the scale.

OK, here's the list I've got so far. I'm disqualifying anyone who's dead because a) you stop being grizzled when you die and b) there are too many formerly-grizzled actors who are now dead to include. if anyone wants to start a "who WAS more grizzled?" poll then go for it.

Clint Eastwood
Nick Nolte
Harry Dean Stanton
Paul Newman
Gary Busey (i agree he's more crazy than grizzled, but i won't cut him yet)
Sam Elliott
Tom Waits
Kris Kristofferson
Mickey Rourke
Tommy Lee Jones
Charlton Heston
Randall 'Tex' Cobb
Chuck Norris
Harrison Ford (my own addition)
R. Lee Ermey (also my own addition)

I need more convincing that these ones are grizzled enough to be on the poll: Robert Redford (LOOKS grizzled but i don't think he IS grizzled), Bruce Dern, Klaus Kinski, Clint Howard, Roddy McDowell (i don't know if fur'ners can be grizzled or not)

it's too bad to have to exclude Jack Elam, Warren Oates, James Coburn, Lee Marvin etc. cos they're dead, so maybe i'll do a 2nd dead & grizzled poll.

I'll post the poll soon, so make any new suggestions or argue for old ones soon.
